Hi I have had my uniden for almost a year and had it plugged in to the accessory port (cigarette lighter) and I decided I want to tap into the mirror for power on my 2015 Ram 1500

I used my ohm meter and found that the pink wore with yellow strip is 12v to ignition, and black wire is ground. I was going to order the kit like this:

But then was wondering can't I just cut my coiled power cable now and just tap into the pink and black wires to the mirrors? I doubt I would need a fuse because the power to the mirror is fused (I'm assuming). And if this is possible does any one know what two wires I would need from my current power wire RJ11 to uniden r3?

There is red, green, black, and white... Not sure why there is four wires when there are only a hot and ground in accessory port. Can someone please help me out with this?

Thank you, Randy

Personally I always go to the fuse box with an add a fuse. It's easy to remove without a trace and not much more effort than a mirror tap.

I wouldn't modify the cig lighter cable because they're expensive and nice to have if you ever swap vehicles and want to bring the radar detector (rental, family road trip, etc)

You can find Escort direct wire kits on Ebay/BRD for like $10. These work with Unidens just fine.

This is the one I have installed in my truck and mom's car but I think it's discontinued (and more expensive than current offerings):

The extra wires are for remote muting functionality.

I'd imagine the OP is not needing this info but I'm sharing anyway.

It's ridiculously easy to make a fused mirror tap.

Although I'm sure not everyone has a designated tool box with spare miscellaneous wire harnesses and related automotive audio and security install parts/supplies.

I simply removed a couple wires w/ pins from their harness and soldered them to the +/- wires. The red (+) and green (-) of the RJ11 wiring w/ inline fuse. Heat shrink included of course.

The pins / legs slid into the back of my RVM harness nice and tight.

Wrong color wire in my previous post. Negative / ground wire on RJ11 plug is BLACK ...not green. The two wires in the middle are power and ground.

You can try it. If you have the voltmeter why not see how many amps the light draws?
The R3 is happy on a 2A fuse in my experience.
