How early should I receive a Ka reading, CO, perpendicular to transmitter?

The following video is taken on Interstate 87 exiting Sloatsburg rest stop heading north. Note the LEO (@ 2:53) parked perpendicular to traffic on the median, constant on, Ka band. Question, if I was not using Escort Live and Waze, how early should I have received a Ka reading? I have a Escort iX Ci Platform with one receiver near the front grill/bumper & two ShifterMax transmitters under the front bumper. Below is a time-log. Seems I did not get an actual Ka reading until I was directly on-top of the LEO.

First Escort Warning 2:03
First Waze Warning 2:26
Second Escort Warning 2:29
Third Escort Warning 2:45
First Escort Ka Warning & LEO in-sight perpendicular to traffic on median 2:53

If LEO's radar unit was truly at right angle to your path of travel, you may not detect it until you're basically on top of it unless you had good reflective surfaces to get the signal bouncing around. (I did not watch the video.)

We've all seen this short range detection.

your video is private. if his antenna was perpendicular to your direction of travel with limited objects to reflect of then less than half a mile is very normal even for very sensitive detectors. the radar waves are being sent perpendicular and off into empty space so little signal to be picked up. the nice thing with this setup is that he's not able to measure your speed with radar like this. he could be doing laser, or just shilling out.

Honestly, that's really not a bad warning - depending on speed you might've been 3/4 mile away or so.

I've encountered a little bit better and a little bit worse so what you saw was normal. I'm sure he was tagging cars with lidar like crazy especially since the car meet guys like to drive a lot faster

Just to be clear, my question is regarding the first Ka chirp, not the Waze and Escort Live warnings which were much earlier.

If my math is correct and if I had slowed down to 70 MPH after hearing the Waze & Escort Live warning that would have put the first actual Ka reception chirp at 226 ft before passing the LEO (3 seconds).

Plausible. I received no laser warnings, likely because I was already so slow and there may have been other more enticing targets of opportunity.

Yup he was most likely tagging other cars and you didn't get the scatter. I'm very familiar with that road since I drive to Port Jervis a lot for camping a few times a year. I've only encountered C/O Ka there but I've heard of lidar and I/O usage there.

I've seen them there before on the right (northbound traffic), center median, as well as on the left (southbound traffic).
Most recent was TruSpeed (Lidar) while similar C/O Ka radar on. If I'm not mistaken the stalker radar antenna is fixed mounted, and don't rotate based on how they view the traffic,
I couldnt see in the video if the passenger window was open for lidar shots.

That was short, but if you look on the other side there is really nothing for it to reflect off, expect the guardrail or other vehicles. The way it stayed ramped up after you passed made me wonder if it was angled a bit to the left as well, or could just have been the longer latch time. Being a Ci system I would expect a bit better performance. The WS mount iX series is nothing to write home about either. My 360 and R series have given a fair bit more warning than your encounter....but as they say each one in unique so without multiple passes with different RD there is no way to know. Here is an off axis with 35.5 from a while back. Plenty in the way to block the 1st detection but it still managed....

That didn't look like CO. Use that corvette rabbit that was in front of you at the onramp.

Is there a chance the gun was on his seat or lap? Im not sure how they run there guns out there.

Stalker DSR units mounted on the dash. I have never heard of them using handheld Stalker guns

lotta of variables - could easily be 1/4 mile or even less - this is why you see lots of folks with the opinion you cant have too much range for situations like this.

I grabbed some stills of the LEO. Windows appear to be closed on the passenger side. He may be shooting laser or radar handheld out the drivers side, but it appears likely CO fix mounted. No?

NYSP uses mounted Stalker DSR units.

Even with the window up they have lidar guns that can shoot through glass easily such as the Truspeed

Could be a dash mounted radar head turned at a 45 degree angle, still not convinced he's running CO. His target would be very very close then he hits a car several times a minute. Even at that his angle is so great that he will get a low speed reading compared to the actual speed.

There are more knowledgeable NY members here, but if nysp is parked this way, he is either on Lidar, or donut hole break... The only handheld (I need to clarify: speed reading) device in use by nysp is lidar. dual stalkers are fixed front/rear in the car.

Anyway, all he needs in ny is visual estimation in order to ticket you...
