V1Gen2 vs R7... IMO

The extra few seconds are worth it to me for the greatly enhanced protection JBV1 provides.

I really don't understand the reasoning behind this comparing it to the R7. Can you do a detailed explanation?

dumb question but how does JBV1 know what the PSL is for a particular road?

I believe it draws the data from Open Street Map:

OpenStreetMap is a map of the world, created by people like you and free to use under an open license.

And, if you find a road that has incorrect or missing info, you can log in to OpenStreetMap and fix it.

Stand Alone RD. No Phone used features needed.

Why would you not want the RD to have GPS, this would allow the RD to calm down till your selected speed is reached and it would allow a Red light camera database.

I don't care about GPS location lock outs that is too error prone.

If you want to use your phone to update the unit and the database via bluetooth that too would be a good feature to have.

The other thing is that in testing all filters off is fine for maybe highway use in two lane highway but on expressways you need BSM filtering.

City driving with full filtering is the next mode we need in test results.

With Phone use: Waze, other software.
while these apps are useful they complicate life and remove the KISS factor.

another stupid question. For JBV1 to utilize PSL data from openstreetmaps, the device needs data access, correct? It's not like JBV1 downloads the database to the phone, right?

Lack of rampup is my two biggest issues with the R7. The R7 has no rampup, it's either 1-2 bars or full tilt. The V1G2 seems to have excellent rampup. Too bad I have an iPhone.....

Correct.
To put things in perspective;
Even with all features enabled and using the most data possible (higher refresh rates), JBV1 still uses a only 25% more data than Waze for me.

I don't think that's the case with the R7. After using it for months with numerous encounters, I totally disagree. This is also dependent on every situation where LEO enters the Hwy or street at a perpendicular entry. However, I do agree that the V1 has a better linear ramp up. There's both positive and negative with the R7's ramp up. The positive weigh more than the negative to me. I look at it as locking an adversary at a longer distance. Unfortunately with the V1G2, the strength meter is only 6 compared to the 8 the G1 had. Look at the strength meter indicator of the R7, it's got more bars and colored threat differentiation. It also allows me to easily differentiate true K band signals from LEO vs BSM and auto door openers at muted audio alert. Don't know VR did that. Some V1 fanboys will say, you have to hear the audio or look at the phone screen. Obviously, it's a personal choice. Both will give you the protection you need as a "tool".

Thanks. What is everyone using for a data plan for a dedicated (read: not your daily use phone) android device in the car? I'm looking for the cheapest available solution. Either add the device to my family plan (verizon) or get a separate data plan from another provider.

@elantra04, in the past I have used a second phone that didn't have cellular or data service. I simply turned on the mobile hotspot function on my primary phone and it provided the data to the second phone. No need for a second data plan. Worked great.

The features and benefits of JBV1 have been explained ad infinitum. If you go onto the JBV1 section it'll be explained in detail by regular users. I really don't want to rehash all that in here.
I will say that several people who have had a taste of JBV1 after buying a Gen 2 are quite amazed at what it offers.
