I've been an Escort user for years and years and have always updated them with my laptop. My wife recently had a baby and due to a c-section can't do a lot for a few weeks. She's got a 9500 ci in her Tahoe with the laser stuff on it. The car seat won't fit in my car so I'm relegated to driving her Tahoe some lately when they need to go places. I noticed she had her 9500 turned off and asked her about it, basically she's totally annoyed by the blind spot monitoring stuff and just doesn't use it.

My cars have never had the built in stuff so I just plug them in. Her Tahoe had the 9500 in it when we bought it so I kinda hadn't messed with it. I poked around and discovered there is a usb connector someone has pulled into the fuse box so I'm assuming that's the interface to the brains of the 9500. I plugged into it and can't get Windows 10 to recognize it. I checked out Escort's site and they had some serial to usb adapter drivers that also didn't work.

Do any of you guys have any advise on where I should go from here to get the firmware updated. The Tahoe is a 2009 model and we got it in 2012 so I imagine the radar is WAY behind in the firmware department.

I've been using the 9500ci for many years. I can tell you I've always had trouble updating it. There are 2 version of the Escort detector tools, the pro and the original. I can't remember which one I used. Sorry to say without being near my laptop that I use for the update, I can't remember whether it's Windows 7 or 10 ( I use 10 different computers through out the week). Also when trying to connect with the detector, it's always a crap shoot as to whether it finds it or not. I just keep trying different power on and off configurations before it finds the detector and updates.

Congrats on the new addition to the family!

I am not very familiar with the 9500 ci but do not believe it has much in the way of an IVT filter. Can you turn off K band? You could rely on a dash mounted RD for K band when you travel.

You're likely out of luck. I have the Beltronics STiR which is the sister unit to the 9500 (minus the laser shifters). Escort hasn't demonstrated a very stable track record of updating their detectors, especially their older units. The 9500 and STiR are monsters at picking up radar but the BSM falsing would drive anyone crazy. Your best bet if you want to use it would be to segment it to just Ka band (turn off k and x bands). The upside is that you'll have a monster picking-up Ka band radar. The downside is that you'll have no k or x band coverage if law enforcement uses those bands in your area. Segmenting is still better than keeping the detector turned off.

Ya it looks like the 9500 can't segment the K band but I can turn it off (x has been off forever). Unfortunately the K band is still used in my area (Central Texas). I'm still interested in updating it as the GPS seems to take way longer than it should to get locked on.

I'll try flipping it on and off to see if the computer will connect.

Any other advice would be appreciated. It's probably time to upgrade her's and my detector anyway. My 9500ix I got in like 2009...

Go to the Escort website and download the Detector Tools at the following site: https://www.escortradar.com/pages/update-your-device

There are also some YouTube video walking you thru the firmware update process;

(this one is for Apple computers, there should also be one for computers running Windows)
