I just came across this patent from Boeing filed in 2012 and was granted in 2015 describing a navigation system that estimates the distance to or location of the radar source. Will we see a RD from Boeing?

Lucky you, I know the person who designed this (and a lot of other stuff for Boeing).

I can chat with him tomorrow about this if you want more info on it.

I noticed in there a comment referring to determining if the vehicle was being targeted and/or locked on by police radar or other speed measurement systems. I think it’s [0048] that mentions it, kinda at the bottom

It's an interesting read. This patent ties into the vehicle's navigation system. It cites other patents that reported distances back to detectors.

I would imagine that there is great value in having radar detection on both civilian and military airplanes. If the airplane is being pinged by potentially by potentially hostile radar or painted by LIDAR, it would be wise to be able to notify the pilots. Network the civilian airplanes back to NORAD & FAA, and you could have an "Escort Live" of radar detected across the globe from aerospace at any given time. Such a detection system would have use for both military and civilian airplane systems. Detect a radar signal that is known to only be used by a particular hostile country? Send that data back to military intelligence centers in real time as a piggyback early warning system. I'm sure there are other possibilities too -- but this is all just my own speculation.

Wow, I’m surprised they’re using signal strength to estimate distance. I would have figured that wouldn’t be reliable or direct enough as an indicator, but Boeing would have an insane amount of experience with this so who knows?

Probably not Boeing, but the companies like Rockwell-Collins that provide the Avionics. Collins TCAS provides heading, air speed, altitude, and distance from other aircraft in the air space displayed on the Nav/WX display. Yes it is most accurate using its own transmissions but is still plenty accurate enough when displaying non-TCAS equipped aircraft via their received Mode S Transponder signals.

But since I haven’t tracked this in 15 years since we were no longer helping with TCAS, so Boeing could have very well went out and bought an Avionics company to bring it completely in house.

I could see how this would be really cool doing something like telling distance to a nav aid but a frickin 737 isn’t going to be using VORs.

I don’t see why they would pour money into something that works for ground navigation either. Professional pilots don’t get lost on runways for several reasons.

maybe this is a true radar detector so we don’t get shot down by commies again but couldn’t Boeing just take what the government already has in that department?

This patent discusses taking signal strength and direction data from a radar detector and combining it with a navigation system to estimate the position of the police radar and display it on the map. Nothing to do with aircraft or airborne radar.

Agreed with IM, they refer greatly to ground vehicle (cars and commercial vehicles) navigation systems. There is lots of mentions on different ways to acquire and estimate the signal distance based on strength, topographical data, and even known obstructions that could interfere or skew the signal. I don’t think a single part of this was built around aircraft systems. This seems like a way for OEM’s to integrate radar detection into their cars infotainment

Head Down. Sorry, I made a simple joke.
Maybe if Boeing launched this product, it would get them out of their 737 Max crisis.
Meaning that selling this automotive navigation system "upgrade" would make up for the lost profits due to the 737 Max fiasco. Next thing I know, people are talking about plane navigation systems. My apologies.

Still have no idea why Boeing bought this patent. Unless its some sort of play against all the radar technology that are being added to new cars. Imagine if they were serious, and invested some money to further develop this concept.
