This is my 1sr experience with a leaky detector, which I suspect was a Cobra.. OMG.. it fooled me good.

So I'm driving down I95 and I get a hit on ka 34.437.. about 2 miles down, i know the Leo's like to sit there and they're marked on Waze. This is while I'm going under a bridge. It's not unusual to pick up radar here because the cops like to run radar on the road that the bridge sits on.

What was unusual was that when I have picked up radar in the past, the signal weakened and was lost with in a 1/4 mile. This time, my R7 was showing a rear arrow and the signal kept getting stringer..

I see the cops in the distance and I keep getting closer, the alert gets stronger, but my arrow is point to the rear.. I'm like WTH is going on, does the new fwd 124 have a bug?.. BTW, the freq also changed to 34.435.

As I pass the cops sitting in the median, the arrow flips to the front, but the freq also. Changes again to 34.434...signal is really strong so I'm thinking maybe another Leo in front of me..

Signal bar drops one and freq now changes to 34.433.. then the signal picks up again.. I'm like what is going on? I was more than 5 miles from where I had originally picked up the alert.. then it hits me.. leaking detector.. so I'm slowing and speeding head if the cars around me to see where it might be coming from.

Sure enough, theres a Benz SLK and I see a detector up next to the rearview mirror and I circle him.. and it was him..

I get off the exit and he's behind me.. and I know for sure its him..

Dang.. I've never experienced anything like this.. never a false on 34.7.. and the way it acted, I thought it might have been an RDFer with a Ka gun messing with me.

Related to another thread about segmenting;
When you do get LEO signals, are they in the 34.43x range?

Also, those arrows sure do come in handy at times like those!

That's an interesting false! Most of the time you'll either see 33.7xx or 35.4xx due to the LO frequency used by cheap Whistlers and Cobras. I wonder what detector he was running to cause a 34.4xx false?

Maybe it was 35.4xx... but I could swear it was 34.4xx.. I kept saying to myself, why am I seeing this freq when MSP always runs 35? Maybe I'm crossed eyed and didn't even know it?

35.4xx might be right, but if it's actually 34.4xx, that would be interesting!

I've had Ka-band falses because of leaky RDs, but never from two miles out!

It was well over 2 miles.. it started at exit 87 down to exit 77.. then he followed me off the exit. It was nutz!

I have a very strong feeling that this is to blame for a lot of these out of tune guns. I'm not trying to start an argument or anything, and I know that there are some out of tune guns out there, but it looks like I would have seen at least one of them in the last several years with all of my hundreds of thousands of miles of driving all while using detectors with spec mode. I don't just drive around eastern NC either, we've driven up and down the east coast more times than I can even remember and also to Arizona twice round trip and to Texas and Iowa and really all over the country! When we go on an out of state trip, I'll turn all of the segments on on my Redline except for 1 and 9 and 10. I'll get quite a few Ka alerts that are not police radar and are off frequency but 99% of the time I'll see a good old Cobra or Whistler pointing at the sky shortly after! Usually I'll get sick of it very fast and go back to 2-5-8 and let it eat! Then as soon as I get back home to NC, it's back to just 5-8 for YEARS! It's kinda like the way @Freebird handles K band, he knows it's out there but just says to hell with it and shuts it off! That's the same way I feel about out of tune Ka guns! If I get popped because of this, I'm a big boy, I'll deal with it!

I’ve gotten 34.498 falses before so I run Seg 4 OFF.

What are your Ka settings? Wide? Narrow? Or segged?

If you have Seg 4 OFF, you shouldn’t be getting a 34.4 false.

My R3 makes my Original Redline false to 35.153 if I'm behind a truck or in front of a wall. It's the 3rd harmonic of 11.7176667 so makes sense.

Maybe a cobra 33.7 or 33.8 false

NO way was it 33 anything.. From memory it was 34.43x.... But I was wondering why it wasn't 35.43x.. because I've only ever seen MSP run 35.5.. Like I say before, maybe it was 35.43x.. and I was just cross eyed...

On the Escort & Beltronics detectors, you can enable RDR; Radar Detector Rejection - designed to check for interference caused by leaky detectors. The Uniden R series setting for this is called Ka Filter.

On both brands's platforms, it will delay the initial Ka fringe "blip" detections while it continues monitoring it and checking for it to be a potential false -- all before alerting the user. If you're just out for a casual drive, then RDR / Ka Filter set to On can be good for you as you'll keep the detector quieter. If you're trying to set a new record for crossing the continental United States as fast as possible, you'd be better served with RDR / Ka Filter set to off.

Hey Big Boy! Here's the million-dollar question. Have you turned off k band yet? Lol

I need a t-shirt that says No stinking K band!

By the way I have also experienced falses from leaky detectors in the 34.xx range.

Almost! I'm down to city mode with K filter and TFS on on my R1's. It IS off on my Whistlers and my Redline! I'm getting there buddy!

Just last week I also had a 34.433 false from what appeared to be a cobra detector.
Like the original OP, I circled the car with my R7 and watched the arrows point at his vehicle.

I have a guy following me with a really leaky detector once, he was behind me fore miles causing falses... it's obnoxious. there are also a few satellite dishes in my neighborhood that will cause a weak 33.7 false, but at least they are stationary so I know where to expect the false.

so if I turn on KA filters in 2 detectors in my car-is it safe to run them both simultaneously then?
