Well, not new but it's a V1 for $6! It's actually in great condition and works. So for a little over $300 I can have a new V1 or just keep it and play with it.

Serial Number 3808280XXX
Your V1 does not have Junk-K Fighter

We recommend that you UPGRADE. Junk-K Fighter eliminates most of the nuisance false alarms caused by lane-change warning systems in some newer cars. Customer satisfaction is very high with this feature.

Our Instant Upgrade works like this: As soon as we receive your old unit (in operable condition with no tampering of the serial number) we'll exchange it for a brand-new, current-production V1. This is our way of assuring you'll be without V1 protection for the shortest time.

PRICE: $289 plus shipping

BS, that's only going to be a "good deal" if you can drive with it in your local area without the newer filtering offered by V1. $289 is crazy money for an upgrade.

Wait, what? For $6 he just got over $100 off a brand new unit with the latest firmware and all the standard parts.

Yep, if BS can switch off K band, it could be a great deal.

(I just had my V1 updated from TMF1 to TMF2. It wasn't useable in my area with TMF1.)

It's a classic with the little laser eye under the rear facing radar horn. Can you shut off X&K band on these? I was thinking about putting it in my wife's car.

I'd be worried about frequency drift issues if it's that old. My first one (bought in 2000) was a newer unit than that and had drifted a lot.

The new design is crystal-controlled to alleviate that issue.

Well, I am going to give it a try. My wife is currently using my old Escort SmartRadar with X & K band off. All locals using Ka now. She doesn't really speed but it she has gotten used to having it in the car. I might throw the old SmartRadar in my daughters car. She has a lead foot like her grandmother and father.

Test it against a talon 35.5 in a double S curve and tell us what you find

The new models have better detection

I'd like to add the information I posted in another thread for the future readers of this thread. :)
www.rdforum.org: Uniden R3 VS Valentine One

I'm still of the opinion that the $6 unit bslaws bought is probably not a properly working detector anymore since it's 20+ years old and that earlier design suffered from frequency drift. (In my own experience, mine wouldn't detect K-band from 10-15 feet away any longer. Due to the way V1 scans, the entire K and Ka range had probably shifted but I wasn't able to test it all.) I wouldn't trust any other 20 year old detector (as is) either.

The Valentine website says he's missing Junk-K fighter which I believe is just the tip of the iceberg of features and improvements that are missing. Junk-K fighter is sort of the delineation point between the old design and new design. They would have been wise to list ALL of the features missing but that doesn't appear to be the way the website works. I knew I was missing other features from previous checking and all it said for me was Junk-K fighter by the time I upgraded. If he still has the laser sensor below the rear antenna, that thing has never been upgraded even once I'd bet.
bslaws can pull the firmware version from the $6 unit and then look at the website here www.valentine1.com: How to Reprogram V1 Radar Detector | Valentine Tech Reports | Radar Detectors | Valentine One | Radar Detectors to see where his unit sits in the timeline.

What I do see his $6 detector as is a $6 coupon for over $100 off a brand new V1. Kind of like those deal websites where you pay $25 for a coupon worth $50 off at a store or event that you want to go to.

Unless you trust it to detect radar... ;)
True but if it doesn't work then for six bucks you are not out much money!:fsmug::fsmug:

Just covering bases. :)

I realize I'm either approaching (or have already achieved) sounding like a know-it-all jerk about this. I don't mean to. I simply don't have any faith at all that the $6 unit is working properly. Maybe if it came in the original box with all of the accessories, but it looks like it's been sitting in a car for 20+ years and not taken care of.

If bslaws finds that it works great, I will profusely apologize and be truly glad that he got such a great deal! Seriously, call me out on it bslaws and I will gladly apologize to you publicly. :) But, if it's not working right, please don't assume that they are all junk based on your experience with the $6 unit.

All I really want here is for anyone that reads any of this to understand the potential downfalls of using an old detector even if it looks great. The last thing any of us want is to see someone get complacent and then realize they missed something really important and they have to pay the price. :)

Frequency drift on those old units was not that great that it never detected. Back in our old RD.net days, some guys would send v1 in annually just to get it checked out, but no one ever got owned due to the alleged drift. It was more like staying on cutting edge of performance issue.

Regardless, for 6 bucks, there's not a single guy here that wouldn't have parted with a fin and buck for that. I'd argue it's still entirely usable in Ka band and in rural areas perhaps even with K on.
