Is it possible to just use a standard rj11 phone cord as an extension to the supplied smart cord? Any wire inversion would be handled by the stock cable. I might give this a try.

I want a longer cable, but not direct wired, to run up the A pillar and to the R3 mounted high by the RVM. I want to be able to easily move to a different vehicle but want to keep the mute button close to me. Not into mirror taps.

If you use a straight through coupler and straight extension cable I cant see any reason that would not work to extend the length on the smartcord.

I did this and it works great, went out to my spare cords junk box, found a coupler and a black telephone wire (my interior is black) plugged everything in first to test it out and the r1 fired right up and works. The only issue I am having is the 12v adapter mute button doesn’t work, but where I mounted my detector high up on the windshield it’s easier for me to push the mute button on the detector itself than on the hidden 12v plug under the glove box!

For the mute button to work, make sure both the coupler and extension wire you use have 4 conductors. If either has only 2 conductors, you are only passing the 12v power and not the mute signal

RJ11 stuff works fine as long, as others have said, as long as you have all 4 conductors and straight-through cables.

I just finished up my hardwiring "kit" and I used a 3-port RJ11 splitter:
Port 1 - RJ11 breakout to +12V and GND leads
Port 2 - RJ11 cable to R3
Port 3 - RJ11 cable to mute button and Power/Alert LED.

Setting it up this way simplified and modularized all my wiring for the detector... also nice to run the cable, cut it to the perfect length and just crimp on a connector so all the cabling is the proper length.

Safe-N-Sound is the company you are talking about.

I run the same setup in 3 different cars with their cords. Good stuff, fast shipping, great customer service. I will use them with every radar detector I own.

Can anyone tell me the lengths of cord. Dimensions of the controller box? Now that they have the proper cord that should have been availble from day one. It's time for a visor mount Uniden.

That's a bit bulky, the Escort one is way smaller

I would like to see a side-by-side photo of this compared to the Escort (which I am more familiar with), or at least direct measurements of the box for comparison. Someone could also send me one and I will provide both photos and the measurements!

I am wondering if Safe-N-Sound can get their hands on one of these and make the same thing but without the giant box so I can just have the alert LED light installed somewhere in my dash so it doesn't remain on constantly to let me know I have power...

No kidding, that box could be 1/3 of its size--looks like option 2 now

Escort one is around 20% wider but its length is shorter.
