So I bought this car charger from ebay and it does not work. I get the "illegal voltage" error and they want me to pay for shipping back etc etc.. im in Canada so its more money to ship back than I actually spend on the thing in the first place.

I need one that works. I have a bcd396xt as advertised in the listing too. I would actually prefer one I could hardwire without having to take apart the cig lighter adapter, but anything will do at this point. What do you guys use?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry to hear about that, and you're right -- it explicitly mentions your exact model of scanner. It looks kind of generic, though. I wonder what the output voltage is? The 396XT needs 6v and I have heard of people frying theirs with incorrect adapters.

The one I'm using is this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005YF63UC/?tag=rdf0cd0c-20

I wired up one of these behind my dash to give me 2 extra 12v and 2 USB : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YJ8TVQ/?tag=rdf0cd0c-20
It's a little bulky with everything plugged in, but I found room for it.

Top Power is a Chinese company and it does not surprise me that the voltage is a little outside of the specs. With power supplies and adapters it doesn't pay to go off brand.

Thanks guys! I will just go with the uniden one. I dont even like to use chinese ebay phone chargers cause they usually get my battery really hot so you know its not OEM spec haha. No point saving $20 to risk a $400 scanner.
