I just bought the max and hooked it on. Now, I am wondering of I should do something regarding settings.

Settings say, Novice or Advanced. I am assuming this relates to technical ability and not driving speed/experience of driver. Correct?

What meter mode is best for someone who will mostly drive in city during the week (about 50 miles a week) where speed limits are all under 45. On the weekends I take to the highway and drive about 200 miles to one of the bigger cities nearby and back. I suspect a lot of police use Laser in my state but radar too. Speed limit is 70 but with my 370Z, I tend to speed a bit, say 85 with a short spurt hitting 100+ but mostly cruising at 80-85.

The modes options are Standard - Single bar with bar graph and signal strength, Spec - Single band with numeric frequency (what does it mean?), Expert - multiple bands of bar graph and signal strengths, Simple-messages replace bands: Caution or slow down.

AutoMute, do I keep it off or on? AutoLearn-does it come with it one or do I select to keep it on?

GPS filter - On or OFF?

Your advise and suggestions deeply appreciated.

By hooked it on, I mean the suction cup is attached to my windshield, the MAX is attached to the cup, plugged in to my car and on. I bought it, unwrapped it outside Best Buy, and started using it for the 2 mile drive to my home. It alerted me once to an X band and once to a K band. Now I am home and asking advice.

congrats...

you can pretty much use the default settings. However, you may want to consider changing:

1- Keep Sensitivity on Highway mode (anything other than Highway mode with "auto" reduce sensitivity base on speed)

2- turn "POP" on if cops are using POP in your area otherwise leave it off which is the default setting

3- set cruise alert to 50 or 55 (this will quieten nuisance alerts in the city)

4- auto mute - on

5- TSR will reduce sensitivity to K so turn it off if you dont need it

6- change meter mode to either SPEC or Expert, SPEC will show the frequency of the radar and expert will show multiple alerts simultaneously

7- turn X off if it's not used in your area which is rare.

OK , gotcha!!

Here's your best performance settings:

Highway Mode

TSR OFF

Turn OFF those bands that you can (most ONLY run K and Ka/Lidar, BUT it sounds like you NEED X, so if you do, leave all bands on.

Truelock is a personal preference, BUT if you want to run it, you need GPS ON. I'd leave GPS on regardless as it allows you to mark locations and also show your speed.

You can't seg or RDR a Max, so I'd basically just put it i Highway mode, TSR OFF and you're good to go.

Thanks, Guys!!! Much appreciated. I just read the review from the Veil Guy and it made me think that I should just return the MAX for something else!!! he does not recommend the MAX. Hopefully some of you are okay with it.

I really love mine, its performance has been ample and its been very quiet except for the occasional falsing people have complained about. Escort also can update the Max with new firmware that can improve the units performance/filtering.

Over all there are some growing pains that have been pointed out, but it seems newer units are better than some of the first runs. Keep trying it out and reading here, at the least you will get to know what you do like/want and don't. You also get 30 days to decide.

Run POP? really? Is it really used anywhere?

If you want a unit that kicks a** and take names! there's only one and it's not the Max! I own both can say unequivocally that I love my Redline and that there's no doubt it's the hottest Windshield mount there is, bar none! Listen to Bob (veil guy), he's been around the block more than once and does an excellent and truthful review!

if you get a Redline direct from Escort, you'll also have a full 30 days to check it out.

Like Pointer I too own both. I believe the max is a good radar detector. However as pointercone stated if you want the best and would like to have your mind blown at the level of range then pick up a redline.

i'm covered up with it. thats why i had to get on board with the max. my old rx65 s7 was missing the hits. the guys in my area hit u with it and what i have seen from Vortex's vids the MPH units instantly flips from POP to to C/O as soon as the unit gets a speed ..

whoa whoa! Vortex has vids of POP being used in Washington?? News to me, need to see this. I have tried running it before but it goes off all the time, kinda like k-band "falses" from a newer vehicle do. driving along and all of the sudden POP full alert, becomes very annoying.

Not always, but yes, it can. If you transmit right after getting a speed with POP, it does switch to C/O to let you get a normal reading. If you wait a bit between shots, you can shoot successive POP shots and it'll stay in POP mode, clocking speeds with each shot.

The videos he's referring to are here. They're of demo'ing the Bee III itself in the lab, not of seeing POP in use in the real world. :)

Do you see POP when out driving around? The WSP does shoot 33.8, but I usually run the V1 so I don't get POP notifications. If you're seeing it, I'll switch over to the Redline for a little while and see what I find.

No I turned it off after a week or two of owning my redline. Got annoying to get them. Would make me almost jump out of my seat cause it would just come out of nowhere with a full alert. Just me on the road at times too.

Vortex, in all my years of driving, I have never seen POP in the wild. Seen it in lab and one on YouTube, but never in actual use. We should do a poll on this.....

back on topic, the Max will do well on Pop since it truly is " quick."

I think some detectors false to pop when it's really a quick intermittent 33.8 signal from an oncoming car sensor right on the edge of its range.

My 9500ix falses to pop, rarely but it does, and it's sensitivity stinks compared to my V1C.

Having said that, with my V1C, I frequently see 33.8 falses from oncoming passenger cars that are less than a second. Most I have "in the box" muted but i still see them.
The beauty of arrows and freq readouts rather than a dummy Readout that just says "pop"!

No wonder there's so much confusion.

Now this guy definitely knows what he is talking about.....take it immediately back for the REDLINE, your welcome!
