Just got my MaxCam and in Escort Live, I only see Radar Settings and Bluetooth Settings, no WiFi. And I can’t get the Drive Smarter app to detect it either. (iOS)

Which app is meant to be used to connect it to WiFi?

Your phone has to be connected to the wifi you are setting up on the detector I do believe.

Yeah WiFi setup has been removed from EL. You now do it in Drive Smarter.

It's oddly buried in DS. I'll go grab my MaxCam real quick to point out where to do it.

...that's dumb. Usually you get that error if the device is already paired to someone else's account. Have you set it up under a different phone by chance? I found that unlike Escort Live, you can only have a MaxCam paired to just one phone.

Whoa! That's a VERY stupid move on Escort's part.

Agree... Especially for a combo unit who's main appeal is being able to easily move the combo between vehicles and users...

Yeah I first realized this when trying to test Drive Smarter under Android. The MaxCam that Escort sent me was one they were using for testing and I'm not able to pair it to my account because it's still paired to their account. Lots of little annoyances like this.

Just did a quick video walkthrough on how to set it up. I'll post it up in a few min.

Ooof yeah I just realized my Escort Live login is different and pairing to that app must’ve automatically associated it. Okay one step closer to getting this working. Managed to put in my home network but it’s not connecting. At least it’s something new to troubleshoot :D

Playing around with it sometimes, I found you may have to tell it to manually connect once or twice. It doesn't always connect on its own or when you tell it to.

Here's a quick walkthrough on how to do it:

I don't think you'll need this anymore now that you mostly got it, but I guess just in case someone else is playing around with it too.

Thank you sir! Yeah it was a pain but eventually got it connected and updated to 1.5. Far from user friendly…. I can’t imagine their average customer is having an easy time with this!

Yeah at first I was wondering if it was just me being used to Escort Live and how there's always going to be a learning curve when getting familiar with a new interface, but there's a lot of weird UI choices in here. It seems like the app is nearly universally disliked here so far so it's more than just simply being used to a different app.

For my review, I already have a section towards the end after I mention a lot of the issues I'm seeing that's basically "I'M NOT TECH SUPPORT!!! If you have issues, here's a link to RDF, here's Escort's support forum, here's Escort's phone number, here's their email address, here's their contact form. If you're also seeing issues (and chances are you will), here's all the same resources I'm using to get help." :p

I tried Drive Smarter last night. It could connect, but then said that there was an update and did I want to download it. Then it understands my phone has it and asks if I want to re-download or install the update. I cancel out, then I can't see videos. Nothing works.
Other family members not being able to pair their phones with with the same detector is annoying. Love the detector, not the app.
I don't understand why they can't make it so the detector finds wifi and then enter access password through the detector so it just connects on its own.

Yeah the in app method for updating is really buggy. It puts the detector into a WiFi access point mode so it can upload firmware to the detector and then the detector is supposed to find the update. Pretty much each step of that is bug laden and I tried 3 or 4 times before giving up and letting the detector update itself over WiFi.

All in all it took me an hour and a half to pair and update this thing. If I weren’t an enthusiast I think this thing would be back in its UPS box to Best Buy :D

For real. It's really testing my patience to not simply go off and rant about this thing and all the issues. As much as I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt about how things could be improved over time or whatever, this is an expensive product that's billing itself as a premium device. I don't think it's unfair to expect things to work smoothly, or to simply work at all for that matter. If we were beta testing, okay fine, but this is the public launch with products that we paid full retail for.

I suppose it helps to separate the app from the radar detector and the dashcam, but the app and WiFi experience really is integral to the experience, especially given how much Escort is trying to emphasize SaaS as their competitive advantage, but man...

Yeah honestly if it weren't for you and the 3 other early adopters (lol) ranting about this thing already, I would've gone off on a huge rant. Heck I'll start: This is a new low even for Escort and they're really competing with their RL360c launch in terms of which product is less usable on launch day :D

The software side of this product is a total joke. Having both the EL app and Drive Smarter app take on pieces of the functionality... The thing comes with a day zero firmware update and 2 of the 3 ways of installing it (via DS and via USB) don't really work... It seems to have trouble pairing with GM vehicle hotspots so those people are going to have to do something creative to get their catch-22 update over wifi.... Seriously, I wouldn't even open a beta program with this many issues. Did they even try to hand this thing to a few employees to see if they can set it up without needing help?

For a public launch of a flagship detector direct to consumers, this is simply not acceptable, period. At best they're going to flood their call centers, and when the current answer is "yeah there's some known bugs but no timeline to fix it", I think the correct thing to do is to return the product if you're having trouble. And this is just basic setup, I haven't even started ranting about how the speed limits don't seem to work over wifi or how much of a mess it is to attempt to use the dash cam functionality.

It's such a shame too, because I've started playing with this thing on a bench and driving around town a little, and as far as the hardware goes, it's everything I've wanted from a "Max" branded detector and then some! Great Ka performance, about expected Escort grade K band behavior that prioritizes filtering. Seems to be better than my V1G2 on BSM filtering or at least Auto mode dramatically quieting punchthroughs.... It's everything we hoped the Max would be, almost a decade later. It's for those reasons I really want this damn thing to work.

I really appreciate hearing your perspective, especially considering your background. :)

It's also helpful for me personally because some of this stuff seems crazy and I can't help wondering if I'm missing something obvious and doing something wrong, even after talking things over with you and after chatting with Escort directly. The last thing I want is to have something be user error on my part and unfairly dinging Escort because I wasn't able to get something working. So the fact that you and others are able to confirm the same issues and have a similar perspective with how ridiculous this stuff is, it makes me feel better than I'm not being unfair and overly harsh in my complaints.

Agreed. If you ignore a lot of the app stuff, it's a pretty great RD so far.

If I didn't see this happen before by watching your videos, Vortex, I would be extremely angry. Since I have been watching for years and finally was able to buy one, I knew full well what was in store for me. As a standalone detector, plug in USB for videos, Great!!! Though that isn't how it is being marketed. They want all these modern conveniences and it is obvious on software side of things, they are in over their head, yet they cling to their own software and won't open source their detectors, with the help of outside programmers, who could do this stuff standing on their head. Imagine Escort integrated in Waze or a program like JBV1 with the Escort detector settings built in. And imagine it actually working. Then they could focus on the performance of their detectors and dashcams.

Today, I didn't have any alerts from my commute so I headed off to the interstate to drive around. I came across one K band alert that slowly ramped up and then disappeared before reaching it. Then I had a second x band hit from behind. This thing is quiet. I have been around detectors my whole life, but this is the first one I got for myself. It is good and the video quality is good.

I noticed I can't post videos from the detector here.

Yes the software has a lot of problems. For me:
1- It will NOT work with an I Phone 8. Called Escort they couldn't get it to work. I was told by Escort
"No fix for this issue"
2- No way to update the detector.
3- My other car 2022 BMW X2 I have a RedLine 360c with the AT&T Spark set up. It works perfectly, the MaxCam will NOT work at all in my BMW.
So I sent it back, over $900 with the tax I had no choice. Hopefully they will get the software fixed but knowing Escort that could take a long time.

It's not you at all... I've just had to bite my tongue through all of this.
