I was thinking the MaxCam 360C was the route I was going to go with for my RD and cam, but its not looking too promising. I still have 2.5 months before I get my new car so I have some time to figure things out. If they do get the MaxCam issues straightened out by then maybe it will be the 1 for me. For now I think I'm leaning towards the Red Line 360C and a BlackVue DR900X Plus 2 channel. More $$ then I wanted to spend but it will be some good gear for a long time. Thx for all the testing and advice with this new unit fellas. It really helps a lot of people from having future headaches. Vortex, thanks a lot for all the videos and reviews you've done, really helps us make our decisions easier.

No, to be super clear, they asked me to try this specifically to troubleshoot the issue and see if those issues are what's causing the power issues I've been seeing. They are not saying that you need to shut those features off when using your detector.

OK I want this detector to work so when you say something it not right I take notice. I hated to send mine back but they would not extend the 30 day return window so I had no choice. When you say this detectors issues have been fixed that's when I will consider buying it back. Thanks Vortex.

Understandable. If you're interested in staying on top of updates, I'm not going to be the best person to follow for that. I mean I'm gonna send mine back and then I'm going to take a break from RD's for a while once my son is born. If Escort releases further updates to improve the detector, you'll want to keep an eye on the forums and on the feedback from others who still own a MaxCam. I'm open to getting one again down the line like you, but I'm going to be in a similar camp as you with seeing what other people say here on the forums before I pull the trigger once again.

Yes Vortex that's the best way to go. I was so disappointed when it didn't work right. Go luck on the birth of your son.

I've decided to return my MaxCam. I love the idea and I think it's the best RD/dashcam out there so far, but it needs a bunch more work. I'm kind of tired of testing it at this point and it's frustrating that I can't trust it with the poweroff issues. I'm open to getting another one again later on down the line once Escort has a chance to spend some time updating the unit, especially since it would be helpful to cover future updates and to do more comparison testing at a later date, but right now I need to move on. Time to shoot this review and then send the unit back to Escort. I'm feeling pretty let down and disappointed, but it'll be nice to get nearly $1000 back in my account.
Totally understandable in your circumstance. You can't afford to fiddle around with one detector trying to resolve issues. You are making a business out of reviewing detectors in the plural. So yeah, it is probably wise to move on and leave it to Escort to resolve this problem. I will keep mine, it is working great for me, but I am not hardwired in yet and when I do, it will be a circuit that shuts off with the car. I won't leave something tantalizing in the car for thieves to do a smash and grab. I look forward towards your reviews and Thank YOU!

As for the others, I wouldn't write it off as doom and gloom. This detector, along with all the others has issues. I am running it for the second week and today it saved my butt for the first time. I do recommend holding off buying it for a while though. $850 plus tax is a lot to ask and the fact it has this many issues is off putting to say the least. I am one who doesn't care about those app experiences and don't have any power issues. So there's that.

I can't wait to see the data and reviews on the next detectors like the Uniden R4, how exciting!

Well the new iOS version of the Drive Smarter app came out today. Promised all kinds of improvements. All my old problems are still there like not being able to open the gallery, incorrect time, failure to display speed limit info on WiFi, constant disconnections, etc. Only difference I see is that it crashes almost every time I pick a new menu item.

Thanks Escort!!!!

Just send it back. $850 plus tax for something they didn't test before selling it. I sent mine back a week ago over $900 with the tax that I don't have to pay.

I really want to like this, but Escort is making it so hard. I really do not want to have to run yet another power lead for a separate dash cam but I think I will. The Dride looks cool but I also don’t want to get caught up in another Kickstarter.
I’ve got a little more time before I have to send this back. Will give it a bit more time but I’m losing confidence that they are going to clean up all these bugs any time soon. Very frustrating when they say in the new app version they’ve made several important improvements and bug fixes and being able to view your recordings wasn’t one of them! I don’t mind a few hiccups with new products but this is bordering on ridiculous.

I know I should just be happy with my Redline 360c, particularly considering they are hard to get these days. I may very well be taking your advice soon.

Right now I have a MaxCam that I'm trying out and a R360c into Escort for excessive Ka falsing which only started about a month go. So far I've mostly liked the MaxCam; Drive Smarter not so much. Right now, I'm leaning towards keeping the MaxCam in spite of the glitches.

What I like:
-Solid radar detector build;
-Better ramp up and less falsing than my R360c
-I like having one RD instead of separate RD/Dashcam more that I thought I would.

What I don't like:
-DriveSmarter app very glitchy.
-Can't connect to phone hotspot; home wifi works
-downloading images buffers a long time and errors out frequently.
-Updating from v1.2 to v1.5 took several attempts to finally work. No indication whether Defender Database updates.

So, I've liked how the MaxCam works overall, nice ramp ups, good arrow transition, few falses and really fits well above my mirror for a really clean look. I'm betting that both firmware and app will get fixed / get better.

These have been my sentiments. I am actually very happy with the detector/cam itself. Not so much the software. The only reason I would want the software, would be accessing the videos on the go

I just had my first LEO and Ka band hit. I was going up a hill to a light that was a stale green light so I was speeding a bit. As I was going up the hill, "beep beep" . I saw Ka band, slowed down immediately and made the light. Passed a building, the officer was tucked way back in a church parking lot. The building at intersection blocked him completely. He was angling it away from the intersection that I was coming from. I am sold. Absolutely awesome. My confidence in the alerts is growing.

I did a highway drive yesterday and apparently someone must have been driving next to a Cobra or something, or maybe a cop shooting CO, because the highway was flooded with Ka alerts and so my MaxCam kept alerting constantly.

IMG_7039.PNG

It wound up being useful though to demo how the cloud alerts look, lol.

Regarding Escort's CS, I guess I'm also having issues returning my MaxCam. I filled out the form on the website a few days ago to initiate the return, but never heard back. I called Escort a few hours ago and spoke to someone at CS, but I'm still waiting on the confirmation and info on how to initiate the return.

Escort offered me to keep the second MaxCam they sent me while I was doing my troubleshooting and they'll take a look at my unit when it gets back to see if they can get a better sense of what's going on. I hope they're able to find something useful in their analysis. Given that I'll have a MaxCam on hand still, I'll be able to continue doing tests and videos, but I have no plans to use it until after I'm back from paternity leave next year sometime.

My MaxCam review video I think is gonna be good. I reshot the whole thing yesterday and it was wayyy better on the second take (as usual). It's gonna be pretty long, also as usual haha, but there should be a ton of info to pack into there.

So I'm finishing up my review notes and working on my conclusion right now. Since a lot of you guys are also running MaxCam, I was curious to hear if you agree with my thoughts or not, or if I'm missing something big. I'm also trying to think of how to work around the issues and ultimately get the best experience possible.
  • Great radar detector
  • Decent dashcam for driving, limited functionality while parked
  • Very problematic app experience

  • If you want a RD/dashcam combo, this is the best one out there (but the others aren't very good so the bar is pretty low)
  • The app and cloud stuff is an exercise in frustration, even though Escort continues to push that as a competitive advantage. You'll likely be happier if you mostly skip it for now.
As far as app/cloud stuff:
  • Use Escort Live for configuring RD or for cloud alerts while driving and that works alright
  • Use Drive Smarter to initially set time zone for your dashcam (can't do that from the MaxCam itself for some reason)
  • Firmware updates are important, hopefully you can update with Drive Smarter as needed
  • Better yet, if you use WiFi (in-car or parked near home wifi), update over WiFi instead since that works better
  • PSL and cloud alerts while driving don't work over WiFi so rely on BT instead
  • Otherwise it's best to leave DS alone, especially for dashcam stuff
  • Want to view any recorded dashcam footage? Skip the app and plug memory card straight into your computer
I'm sure the detector/app/cloud will improve in time, but as a general rule with tech, it's best to buy based on how it performs today and not based on the hope/promise of future updates.

Is that a reasonable approach and conclusion?
I don't want to pile on Escort since my last detector of theirs was a RL-O but...Reading all the posts for all these years about software glitches and features that don't work makes me scratch my head.

I get you want to keep product on the shelves and have new models with new technology but if you have a dash cam in your product is to much to expect you go and get a sampling of smart phones with various versions of software to make sure the damn thing works properly in most scenarios? Yes you can have some cut off like it only works on vX.1 thru X.7 or only iPhone 10 thru iPhone 13, something like that and make it obvious to the customer so they are not frustrated when it does not work for them.

Lol, that or a whistler! :D That is a lot of hits! I wonder when they'll get their software running well enough that I will be able to see such a thing. lol.

Sorry to hear you are having issues with getting it returned. I can run by their main office to see if people are there. Last time, I went to see if they had the showroom open and there wasn't many people even there and the showroom was closed. I like seeing things before I buy it. So I have been there before. I know you have too. :) If you ever get it returned and need one later, let me know. I can always mail it to you like others have so you can run tests. Its too expensive of a hobby to buy them all. :)

I can't wait to see your video! I try to catch them all. I am sure others can't wait. How exciting with the new born! I am sure you know, the Fisher Price baby swings are life savers. And it is a special time! So I hope you have good family time and enjoy.

When is your video hitting the streets? Hope soon. I have until the 27th to make my return decision.
I had issues too returning my M2. After calling many times and having them say try back later, I finally got in a call back queue. Got the call back and they said they opened an RMA but I never received the email with the RMA info. Had to try to call them over over again to get a live person. The next time I made them sit on the phone with me until I got the email. Now hoping I’ll actually get the Credit someday…

See if they will extend your return window. They would not do that for me but now I see people are starting to send them back perhaps they will consider this so now. You have nothing to lose.

I'm interested in getting a combo RD and dashcam and was hopeful for the Maxcam. Hopeful in that Escort's record on initial releases have been quite abysmal. I guess this Maxcam is not immune to that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears Escort uses you guys to be their "free" quality assurance / software testing guys. This appears to be consistently the case with each new RD they release!!!

Maybe Valentine will get with the times and release a combo RD/dashcam...maybe...

I think you have nailed all the issues and work arounds. What do you think about adding to the line below something about how it will be difficult to get the detector setup for WiFi because of the app being so finicky, but keep trying as eventually it may go through.
  • Better yet, if you use WiFi (in-car or parked near home wifi), update over WiFi instead since that works better.
Also, I have found if I'm having issues with getting the detector to work correctly with the app, I have to do the following:
  1. Close out the app.
  2. Go to the bluetooth settings of your phone and "Forget the device" for the MaxCam360.
  3. Re-run the app and wait for the "pair with MaxCam" popup.
  4. Try again.
  5. If it doesn't work, repeat from step 1 until it does. It took me a good half hour once to get the darn thing to connect and function enough to setup WiFi etc.
-Mark

Can anyone help or did I get a dud unit? I've done the above listed but the drive smarter app refuses to even detect the maxcam for me. I've restarted the unit several times, verified I'm connected to a 2.4Ghz wifi connection with a great signal, manually paired bluetooth, manually unpaired bluetooth, verified wifi is on in the maxcam software, but the software doesn't even detect the device within 2 feet of it. (bluetooth settings does have the unpaired maxcam 360c as an available option and will pair if clicked on, but the DS app doesn't ask me to pair bluetooth or wifi when I start up or even go to my vehicle in app to add device.

I'm suffering thru a similar issue. I thought it would be a good idea to "start fresh" So I deleted the device and my vehicle from drive smarter. I remade my vehicle and tried to repair the MaxCam. I find the device but when I hit the continue button, it says "Device already registered" so I unpaired it from my phone and tried again. It gets further then Android asks me to pair it...twice. Then I get the same message "device already registered" I have tried everything and to no avail.
