Hi everyone, my name is Feda and I’m the Product Manager for connected cameras here at Escort Radar. Today, we’re very proud to introduce the new M2 radar-mounted smart dash cam!

We’ve listened to your feedback on what you liked and also what you wanted to improve in our original M1 dash cam, and I truly believe we’ve raised the bar with the M2 to give you the video protection and the peace of mind you need while on the road. The new M2 seamlessly pairs with your compatible Escort detector and includes features like:
  • Full HD 1080P Video Resolution
  • Built-In GPS
  • Dual-Band Wi-Fi
  • Cloud Video Management
  • Emergency Mayday Alert
  • Parking Mode
In addition, it’s compatible with our ZW5 and ZR5 laser shifters and uses the new Drive Smarter to easily manage your detector and dash cam settings, features, and video footage all from a single, unified app experience.

I’m excited for you to learn more about the new M2 and also welcome your initial feedback. Please send your feedback to [email protected]. You can find out more about the M2 at www.escortradar.com/m2.

Thanks for checking it out and please let me know what you think.

Welcome aboard Feda! Thanks for joining.

I just ordered an M2 and am curious to compare it to my M1's.

Could you share a little more about the cloud features, mayday alert, and parking mode features? Those are definitely new. I'm curious what benefits they offer and how to use those features.

Thanks for sharing. There's some strong competition from Viofo, BlackVue, and Thinkware so I'm curious to see how the @Vortex review compares it to standalone options.

Can you elaborate on the image sensor you're using? Do you have links to test footage so we can see the quality at day and night?

What are the direct wire options? Can you adjust the camera/detector to power off at a detected drop in voltage, or is it set just to specific hour increments?

Are there plans for cloud storage for recordings, or just remote access? Can you elaborate on some of the security standards/testing you have in place to protect remote access to customer dash cams? As you see almost daily in the news, security incidents and misconfigurations affect EVERY technology company at some point. What has Escort done to ensure I can trust their IoT security posture?

I don't see compatibility listed for the Coba DualPro 360. Can you confirm it's supported, since it's essentially a Max 360 (which is on the list)?

Thanks in advance for the information!

Thank you for the info Feda. Quick question as I see the M2 is both Redline 360c compatible as well as Laser Shifter compatible. I have your Redline 360c along with your ZW5's - can I now use the M2? Can I connect the M2 to my RL360c then plug in the cord from the ZW5's into the M2?

I see you need a hardwired connection for "parking mode".

What would be cool is if the next model M3 could include a small rechargeable battery that gets charged when driving, then goes into a very low-power mode when parked that just keeps a g-sensor powered.

And when that g-sensor feels a shock, it powers up the camera and starts recording using the rechargeable battery.

unfortunately, the batteries would probably not withstand the temperatures on a windshield. This is a reason why most dashcams do not have an onboard battery.

Yup, that's why most have "super capacitors". The heat in Phoenix even caused damage to the lens adhesive used in one of my old Yi dashcams and it became unfocused. Fortunately they warrantied it.

Glad to be here and glad you ordered an M2! Thank you! In terms of new features we have...

Cloud Video Management with our Drive Smarter platform. In the phase one version of this feature, users are able to pull up the camera's videos using the Drive Smarter App (nothing new here), but now users can press the "upload" button to save important clips to the cloud which you can playback from your webportal on Drivesmarter.com

This helps in a number of ways... If you're running out of space for locked recordings on the SD card (we partition ~30% of the SD card for locked recordings, ~70% for loop recording). Now you can upload some of the locked recordings to the cloud for safekeeping and then format the SD card to free up space for new recordings. It also helps if you're worried about someone taking your Dash Cam with valuable recordings inside (perhaps authorities or other drivers). Having recordings saved in two places helps with managing videos and offers peace of mind.

Mayday Alert is also enabled with our Drive Smarter platform. We give you the ability to set an emergency contact in the Drive Smarter app who will be alerted if the camera detects a severe collision (Level 5 G-sensor impact). If the camera detects that you've been in such a crash it will lock the clip and it will ask you if you want to cancel the alert. If you do not cancel (are unresponsive) it will alert your emergency contact. This is not enabled by default and needs to be enabled using the app.

Parking Mode is now built into the Escort camera. When hardwired with your radar detector, the camera goes into a low power "surveillance mode" where it monitors for g-sensor impacts. Once an impact is detected, the camera wakes up and begins recording for as long as it detects movement. Along with this, we have the "Auto-Shutoff" feature where you can set a time-limit on parking mode if you worry about battery drain on your car. This feature also needs to be enabled using the Drive Smarter app.

Hope this helps!

That's cool. Sounds like it makes it easier to backup or share important clips. Is there any automation to this where manual recordings or impacts can be automatically uploaded to the cloud?

Can the M2 connect to the car's in-car WiFi like the connected RD's to upload the footage without needing to go through your phone?

Gotcha. Looks like the manual references motion detection available as an option too?
Along with this, we have the "Auto-Shutoff" feature where you can set a time-limit on parking mode if you worry about battery drain on your car. This feature also needs to be enabled using the Drive Smarter app.
Are there going to be options for voltage management to shut off the dashcam in case the battery drops below a certain level? The manual only references a 48 hour time limit.

Also how does the autoshutoff feature work with RD's? I've never really needed it or used it, but I understand that many detectors can shut off after a period of time of being stationary (ie. 1 hour or whatever the timeframe is). In case the dashcam shuts off, but power is never fully lost, does the detector power back on next time you start your car? I suppose the same question would apply if you still have power after 48 hours and the dashcam has shut off.

Are there any plans for a 3-wire ignition triggered power cable to shut off the RD when you turn off your car while leaving your dashcam on for a period of time?
Hope this helps!

It does, thank you!

Yes, exactly the M2 will pass power from the ZW5 cable to your detector. They are now compatible.

What was the logic in using such a poor quality and outdated 1080p30 image sensor in a new product? Other manufacturers have been offering 1440p or 4K sensors in their dash cams for years, and at much lower price points. For capturing any significant detail (eg license plates), at least 1440p60 or 4K resolution is really necessary.

Agree. Too pricey for 1080 only

So I picked one up, and so far I am having nothing but a headache with it. It constantly tells me there is a new firmware update, it downloads something, goes through a process, tells me it updated ok, then does it all over again.

This thing is really kind of irking me. Oh and the constant "please format sd card" repeating every two seconds while trying to set it up so you can get to a point where you can pair it....yeah thanks. Escort, I will be calling on Monday, but so far, not impressed. Just kind of pissy actually. lol

Is the Drive Smarter app now supposed to work with the M2 and the R360c? Because it is not connecting to the R360c. Fails every time.

In the meantime, the unit reports to be on version 1.10 and yet everytime the phone is connected, it advises a firmware update is required. It downloads, "installs" then starts right back again wanting a firmware update. At this point, the M2 is 100% useless to me. If anyone else has the M2, please let me know what firmware you have and if you see the same bad behavior or not.

Oh wow, you’d think something like that would have been tested and resolved before launch, given that it breaks functionality. Does it work if you don’t pair the app at least?

Edit: Looks like the app and fw update process works for others.

It does work, and for some UNKNOWN reason, it stopped doing the firmware update suggestion and now says that I have the latest....

So here is a link to a video with a shot that I think shows what the real license plate clarity is.

Hey all,

I’ve been running the M2 for a couple days now. Here are my impressions/suggestions for improvement:

Pros:

  • I like the round shape
  • Voice prompts great. With the M1 never really knew what the beeps were saying.
  • Although gallery view is still a bit slow, viewing and downloading recorded videos much easier
  • Good field of view
  • Love the parking mode option (even through I haven’t used it. I don’t have power when off)
  • Home Screen in the app is great. Like that you can see live view with map overlay
  • I like that recorded videos shows map view
  • Love that it mounts to my escort and shares the power. Best feature for me
  • Like the addition of location and time stamps.
  • Like the new Bluetooth and dual frequency WiFi
  • Much faster saving videos locally than the M1

Cons:

  • Wish the resolution would have been bumped up beyond 1080p for this refresh
  • Loading times for gallery in general and between thumbnails frustratingly long
  • Round shape is nice but overall a bit large.
  • Wish the app integrated radar detector information with cam information.
  • App needs work

App update suggestions:

  • App - Gallery
    • Load times a bit long when choosing between stored videos
    • Bubbles next to thumbnails a bit distracting. What’s their purpose? Maybe consider making them smaller and moving them over so that thumbnails can be bigger
    • Date not bright enough and too close to the time in the thumbnail view
    • Only today’s date shown with a couple time stamps in thumbnail view
    • First thumbnails seem to show many 2-3 second recordings. Recording time set for 2 min. Is this a bug?
    • When you click the cloud upload button it says it’s downloading. That’s a bit confusing. What does that mean? Maybe clarify what it’s doing.
    • When you hit the paper plane button it says you’re on WiFi and you need to disconnect to proceed. It’s not really clear what that means . Does that really need to be acknowledged? What happens when one says yes? After upload does it go back?
    • I can’t get edit and share to work. I click on play and nothing happens.
    • Color balance seemed to have significantly changed in one recorded video when sitting still.
  • App - Settings
    • References and logos of Cobra, but this is Escort
    • I turn off logo in watermarks but it still shows up in recording
    • Firmware update keeps saying there is one available, even if on current firmware. Unnecessarily runs the update and hangs up while doing it.
  • App - account
    • When searching for devices, finds my Redline 360 and tries to connect to it. Then it shows an error saying it is not the right type of device. I’m the future will radar detectors be able to connect to the app and integrate information? In any case either don’t show the redline or not allow it to try to connect.
  • Home
    • Please consider having the live view button be smaller, and have it follow the same logic as the traffic toggle. Traffic toggle is either greeted out or white. Camera button is white or with a line through it. It’s a little confusing as to what each graphic means. For example, does a camera with a line through it mean you push it to turn it off, or that it is already off? I think it would make more sense to be white when on and greyed when off.
    • Can the map view show satellite?
That’s all I’ve got for now!
