Buy used or new?

HI everyone, I have a quick question. As I am getting back into the countermeasure game, I already have a V1G2 on the way. With that being said, even though laser isn't a problem in San Antonio yet, it could be, and I sometimes travel to areas where the DE prevails. That being said, I was leaning somewhat toward the TMG set ups until I started reading some of the testing done, and realized I didn't want to go that route. Would it serve me fine? Probably. Would I be pissed and wished I bought a ALP set up instead the first time I got tagged by a DE? Absolutely. That being said, I have decided that I want to go the ALP route.

So, knowing that is pretty much double the price new of the TMG, which was pretty close to the limit I was willing to spend, is piecing together a used set up within the realm of possibility? I have seen a few folks alluding to that, and I wouldn't mind doing that, or would it be better just to save my pennies and go ahead and buy something new? I don't want to hose myself by being impulsive and impatient and buying something that ends up costing me more money. That being said, I did find this:

With that, would it be good for me to add the Black TX and provide good front protection? Especially if I could get them down on price a bit? I think I am willing to gamble on rear protection for the time being, as in it is rare around here to get hit in the rear from what I can tell, and I think (maybe incorrectly) that there is a pretty good chance the V1 could pick up some scatter as it hits the cars in front of me. I had only encountered laser once in my life, and my G1 was able to pick up laser scatter from the cars in front of me before they officially tagged me, about 13 years ago, I know the game has changed. What do you all think?

Honestly, I purchased an ALP system used and then proceeded to spend the exact same amount of money a second time when I had to replace broken parts of the system within the first 11 months of ownership. I was literally out double what I would have paid if I just purchased the system new from the beginning. It was nobody's fault but my own. I highly recommend against purchasing a used system and just getting a new system with warranty from @BestRadarDetectors. His customer service is some of the best I've ever experienced and the warranty offers irreplaceable peace of mind.

The system is expensive for a reason.

It depends on what offer you find. A friend bought an old version of alp (single sensor) almost 2 years ago, for about $ 120 and serves it perfectly for now.

I have the impression that due to the strict law, used CMs are cheaper in Europe.

ALP is the Leader and the best, and they know it. So they charge for that reason. You have to PAY to Play!!

I would also vote new, the problem with used is you need to know how old the components are... Rx heads from 2015 looks basically the same as one from 2020 but the seals were improved in later generations to reduce failures from water leaking in... Also have to consider the age of the CPU, only some of the HW2 CPUs are still getting updates so it would be better to get a newer CPU lest you find it can't get the latest updates. What I would say is start small and build the system from there. Two rx heads will generally protect from everything but DE, outside of certain areas DE is pretty rare so you can cover a lot of threats with just a couple heads. Then down the road when you have extra cash again you can add another head one at a time if needed to get a full setup. I started with a dual and built up to the full setup over a couple years and got many good saves along the way. Also ALP prices are set to increase today 8/1 if I recall so might want to get an order in first thing.

Why are upgrades so important?
If that older version also covers all lidars in a certain country, there is no need for a newer version, that older CPU can be usable for a long time

Buying used makes me nervous... I always wonder if the item I purchased it working correctly.. For example: 1500W RMS amplifier. It is de-rated after so many years of use/abuse? I would not want to find out that my countermeasure is not working correctly during an encounter.

Thanks for the advice. I have $800 in the car mod budget this month and was feeling antsy, probably best I Save up then. In reality, it is only another $800 to get exactly what I want, the latest and greatest, newest, zero doubt. Then add rears later as funding happens. I about pulled the trigger on it, but then thought, Ahhh, I had better ask first. Plus, I also need to get an RSNAV ordered (which is like an android tablet that replaces my MMI system) and I can have waze and JBV1 interfaced through that. Probably better to get the tech set up first before throwing tons of hardware I am barely familiar with on there and fighting that along side.

I have to say - I just bought the TMG with VPR heads...and yes its been tested well in your exact area by you from @Jag42 just a few miles up in San Marcos. I am getting my TMG professionally installed in my Porsche this week and have already updated it and learned quite a bit about it - so far so happy with how easy it is to update and how standard of an install it is. Thing about ALP that drives me crazy is all the add-on's - its like when airlines nickel and dime you for luggage etc. I am sure ALP is great but really don't understand the cost justification when others are so much less including Escort's options...My 2 cents. But I am sure if you find a used ALP you will also be happy. Good Luck!

Well, everything you say makes sense, and those are some reasons I want to buy from TMG, they are local to me, and I like the way their packages don't nickel and dime you to death. All tick marks is why I was highly considering, nay, somewhat biased toward the TMG. But then, through my research I find threads like this:

Which leads to this and this:

So have the Gen 3 with the VPR heads been tested like that? Well no, but you know what always comes out on top? The ALP. Granted, I couldn't find where the newest hardware on the TMG has been tested, so I consider it an unknown. If something new comes out in favor of the TMG, it will absolutely be my choice.

My first foray into countermeasures was when I was in my late teens and early 20's. I went through several tickets and a couple of radar detectors to learn the hard way. (I had enough tickets where I had to get a waiver to join the military). I learned a couple of valuable things. If you speed alone on a road enough, you WILL eventually get a ticket. Always buy the best equipment. I probably paid over a thousand dollars figuring out I needed a V1, and this was in 2004 money. My final, and perhaps the largest takeaway is the only thing worse than having no countermeasures, is having countermeasures you think work, that don't. So I don't want to find myself in that last boat again, and for me, right now, the evidence points to ALP. I would hate to get IPT'd on a thousand bucks worth of countermeasures knowing I could have paid more for the sure thing. If I only drove in my immediate area, I would probably forgo laser protection at all, as from my research, lidar is a unicorn around here.

Sorry, I am being a countermeasure diva and I have only been here less than a week.
