Hello All,

I wanted to get your professional opinion on a question I have. I own a Bel STi Magnum (Originally a STi Driver with WB LNA) upgraded with the BS/RDR firmware. I have RDR off and have all Ka bands enabled. I haven't used the detector much since the upgrade in 16' to magnum and now that I'm using it again I noticed that I never get Ka alerts (maybe one all summer). I was wondering if this is the consequence of instant on radar possibly being adopted in Ontario and its cities or if you think this would be a sign that the detector has a problem. I called beltronics and asked them if they service this detector anymore and if they could test/tune it. They said they no longer update firmware, test or repair the STi's so I am on my own. My K band however has been very chatty (with the lack of BSM filtering) and it's my understanding that the LNA for Ka/K band is the same one. If I am receiving K band alerts does that mean that Ka should also be working or is that not accurate. What would you recommend?

Did you check to see if Ka is enabled?

Yes, all Ka Bands are enabled.
X = off
K = on
KaSW = on
SWS = off
RDR = off
TSR = on
LSR = on
POP = off

Tried highway, autoscan, city, city NoX, same results. Lots of K, never hearing Ka alerts.
I've also factory reset it multiple times.

One of my Driver/Magnums went quite unless I was right on top of a LEO and then it would only give me one or two bars. If I remember correctly, it was on both K and Ka. Shortly after that, I stared getting random Service Required messages. Since Escort no longer serviced the units, I wrote it off. I figured it had something to do with the wire bonded LNA. Hopefully not what is happening with yours.

Thanks for this info. I was reading that the circuit board that has the WB LNA on it is soldered to the main board and these solder points have a tendancy to crack over time and need to be re-flowed for a solid connection. I took the detector apart and tested the continutity of the connection points from the two boards and they seem to be good. I do have to apply a bit of pressure when touching the probes on the board to test so hopefully this isn't affecting the test. I may just need to find a speed trap somewhere and sit close by to see if I can pickup on the Ka signals. The K band is working excellent, very sensitive, so I figure if the K band is working and it's the same LNA than chances are the Ka band is most likely ok. I know a lot has changed over the years and perhaps all the local radar units have been upgraded and use instant on which would explain the quiet Ka band.

Update: So my Ka band is working! I used waze to find a reported location (cruzer was there with someone pulled over). The detector was silent so I stayed in the vicinity and once he was moving again I started getting Ka band alerts. They must be using instant on only in my area now which explains why I no longer get the frequent Ka alerts like I used to. Glad my detector is still functioning correctly but it's a shame constant on is no longer used here.

For anyone interested in verifying the solder points in their detector, these are the ones circled in orange. I tested for continuity between the two boards to make sure the solder was not separated/cracked.

Seems like Escort should still be able to service the WB LNA on the Sti. Because they still repair the original Redlines with the same WB Lna. They just don't perform the Sti to Magnum anymore due to lack of parts. Correct me if I'm wrong? The problem is that it takes a week just to get someone on the phone. :(

I called escort about a month ago and they told me that they no longer repair the STi’s nor do they upgrade firmware or test them. I also brought up the fact that they share the same LNA as the Redlines but they were still firm that they no longer provide any type of support for the STi’s. It’s unfortunate but I had the sense that they’re pushing their new products and don’t want to support these detectors anymore. I also heard that they lost some of their technicians so maybe they just don’t have the man power to handle these requests anymore.

I also have a STI magnum and several yrs ago it stopped picking up any k or ka band. I sent it to bel for repair and it worked again for a few more yrs until it started showing service required within 5 minutes of power up, along with no K/KA pickup. Im about to list it on ebay for parts at this point as bel wont service them anymore, damn shame.

I’m sceptical of the KA on my original Redline. I have seen so many LEOS in the past 2 months that don’t appear to have their radar guns on, that Im questioning whether or not my Reldine is working. K band works fine. I finally borrowed my buddies Redline so I’ll run them together and see if his alerts while mine sleeps. Seriously, I‘ve met at least a dozen cops in the middle of nowhere, out on the highway, and my Redline has been silent.

I use it everyday for the past 5 years, so this is definitely a new phenomenon

Ive read not to long ago that escort really never owned the ( Name ) brand Beltronics and that the patent (name) is still held up in Canada ,,,, even tho escort//cobra claim they do... ... And im doubtful they will admit it.
But this was something i had read, so cant say 100% if its true...
But seems weird they will fix the escort but not the Bel.
