Willing to go past my budget if there is bigger performance per dollar ratio. Even if I'm just starting out, I'm still willing to learn and use more advanced features down the road.

Tom, welcome aboard. I think something like the Uniden R3 or the R7 are going to meet your needs quite nicely.

Welcome Tom6 to the really big show.
Best thing to do is watch Vortex's videos on YouTube.
A wealth of information and will help you navigate the process of finding your best value detector for your needs.

Welcome aboard. R7 or V1G2. You stated you wanted to pair your phone, that makes the V1G2 your best option. R7 is more of an all in one unit.

Performance gains per dollar beyond $500 are currently pretty minimal if any.

Right around $500 you have the Valentine 1 Gen 2 and Uniden R7, two of the very best in the business.

Both have some pros and cons relative to one another. V1G2 a little better on Ka band, R7 a little better on K.

For an android user who is on board with the idea of pairing a phone and eager to learn new/more-advanced features, the V1G2 looks very appealing. The JBV1 app paired with the V1G2 gives you some really cool capabilities.
