There are several threads discussed about Escort Defender Database for GPS equipped detector, there are Escort subscription options, as well as the option with Escort Live app. By reading the definition and how to take advantage of the database for red lights and speed cam locations, it is VERY confusing. After months of reading and trying, I finally understood it and like to summarize it for those may still confused by what, if, and how.
1. There is the Escort subscription offer, one or three years of database update. This offer is for ALL GPS enable the detectors, you are download those weekly updates to your detectors. For detectors with WiFi function, it will automatically download those updates every week as long as your detectors are connected to WiFi. First 90 days of updates are free to all new detectors.
2. The other option is Escort Live App. This is the same Defender Database which is updated on the phone app. As long as your detectors connected to Escort Live, either via Bluetooth to the phone or WiFi to Escort lIve directly (if your detector has WiFi function), you will have the same alerts for red light or speed cam. However, the database IS NOT downloaded to the detectors itself.
So, based on above, unless you have a detector has only GPS function, no WiFi nor Bluetooth, or you never see your detector will be connected to either WiFi or Bluetooth, then the Escort subscription would have its value. If you have the detector with WiFi or Bluetooth, and see yourself will be connected for the most of time, Escort Live will be the way to go. You get the same defender Database except for downloaded to the detector itself. The best part is Escort Live is free!
In my situation, I have my RL360c always connected to WiFi hotspot, it always get me red light and speed cam alerts based on GPS location with the updated database, there is no need to purchase separate subscription from Escort.
