Hello everyone, im new to RDF and looking for a little guidance. I do a lot of driving for work (mostly freeway, some rural and mountain) and im looking for a good all around Radar detector and jammer... is there something all in 1?
I noticed Rocky Mountain at first and then found that it may not work? Then K40 but that seems pretty complex and might not be all that great? So I am leaning towards Escort? IDK??? Please help.

Guess I should say, I bought an R3 to get me started since it seems like a great all around detector... I think I also need to say what state, I am in CA... NorCal (San Francisco area)

Thank you to all that participate in this... Absolutely amazing to have a group of people to ask which all have tons of real-world experience...

your account has to age a bit (?an hour) for the link to work...
.
The R3 is a SOLID first grab...
there are some NW USA people on here that can guide you on getting it dialed in... this forum's search tool is also a great way to find a beaten path.
.

Hello @Mspellman562 and welcome aboard RDF!

It really doesn’t take more than about 5 minutes (sometimes a little longer) for the forum software to recognize you after your first post. You should be able to fill out the radar detector recommendation form now.

The R3 is one of the top detectors, so in regards to radar, at this moment you're probably not going to find much better in terms of detecting radar. The R7 brings more features to the table, but my two R3s outperform my R7, but not by much.
Your next step would be ALP or TMG for laser protection, depending on what you come across in CA. But IMHO, you made a very good first purchase with that R3. Congratulations!

Welcome, great first choice on the R3! Either jammer works in CA, so read up and don't be shy to ask questions. Jammers are illegal there, but if you do an appropriate Jam to Kill(JTK), nobody is the wiser.

Is there such thing as an all in one? Like the Rocky Mountain Judge? Or is that just not possible?

You guys are awesome! I truly appreciate the help on this... I have kinda been in analysis paralysis mode based on too many options.... Ok, where do I get the ALP's?

Not really. To keep it short and simple, buy a radar detector(R3) and a separate laser jammer system(ALP or TMG).

The Tail Lights Pulling Away From You
Do some reading. Vortex’s site is a great place to start to for some unbiased reviews on different detectors and jammer systems.

RMR = Snake oil. Absolutely Bull shit. It doesn’t work.

K40 = Stay away... kind of works but pushed by dealers because they get it so cheap and charge so much. Huge margines for lack luster performance.

Laser protection in a radar detector is more or less, a ticket notifier.... if it goes off at all. More marketing than anything useful or dependable. That’s why they’re called Radar Detectors. Some are better than others... but it won’t save you. If it goes off.... the Leo already has your speed.

Lidar Jammers are a different animal. Your combatting light..... not receiving radio waves. There’s no easy way to do it and it’s not cheap.

It’s like a laser pointer. If the laser is pointed at a car besides you.... you’d never really know. Unlike radar... pull the trigger while pointing it down the road and everyone Miles back can see it on their detectors.

Light doesn’t do that. It’s doesn’t carry on past the target. That’s why Leo’s like it on busy freeways. They can pinpoint individual cars. It has a scope like a rifle on it. Radar can’t really do that

So since you like rotating cars.... you’ll have to install it and uninstall it. It also has to be done right. It should also be tested every time you install it.

There’s no free lunch. You did good with the R3. It’s a great detector.

This is where you order the ALP's---bestradardetector (BRD) owns the site and you will get to know him here. What kind of vehicle is this going on, you wil probably want a 3F / 2R set up for full protection

ALP JAMMER

Welcome to the forum @Mspellman562. Posting #13 from @Heywood is a great cliff notes education on radar and laser. Two completely different tools used by police and at the moment, you have to use two separate devices to handle each tool. He was also kinder regarding Rocky Mountain Radar than many of us would have been :). Stay far away from RMR.

You mention in your other post that you flip cars every year or two. That means uninstalling and reinstalling the LJ each time and then getting them retested. It’s a bit of work you need to be prepared for. The only really easy LJ to do this with are the Escort ZW5 which are wireless but I believe you need an escort RD to get the most from them. Check out the below video.

These are going to be the easiest install but not necessarily the best protection. You’ll have to weigh your requirements.
Good luck.
