At highway speeds they are very similar but at lower speeds Auto significantly reduces "false" alerts.
To test, if you sit in a parking lot with a door opener present while in in Auto it may not even register an alert but switch to Highway and after a short period of time (maybe 20 seconds) the opener will register on the display. Auto Mode filtering is all about the speed you are driving. If your GPS fails (or you lose the signal) the detector automatically reverts to Highway by itself to avoid any Auto filtering at highway speeds where you might be more susceptible to getting a ticket. So yes, Auto Mode does work but only at the lower speeds for which it was programmed.

Maybe tell us which model of detector you mean, because an Auto mode on a non-gps detector must mean something else entirely.

If it's an Escort, and has Auto Mode, it will have GPS too.
Most Escort models have GPS to use this feature.

Does something, not sure what, but supposedly intelligent....

Looks like it's more for X band.
Now these days we have K band as the major door opener falsing culprit.
Maybe time for an upgrade.
Used DFR7 would be cost effective and way better detector.

There is also nothing long range about this model Ka performance.
One of the worst on the road....

I did many tests, IO,QT,CO, weak signal, strong signal, mix of 2 or even 3 signals (2K, 1 Ka)....NOTHING!. AUTO IS HIGHWAY all day long. Reactivity and sensitivity remain like in highway mode.

( we need only K band here, detectors strong on IO detection)

8500 X50 is too old a model to be effective today.
Auto mode is only affecting X band.
Lots of choices available.
Make a choice from Vortex Radar and look for a deal on used or new detectors.
It's your only fix really....

With all respect, i ask about "Auto" mode on belscort, not about my detectors. If someone "discover" how is working i want to know too, or it was a big marketing lie from the beginning?

Nor R3 or R7 cannot deal with acc and bsm disaster on our roads...only K segmentation and reading frecvency value will get you the picture...

Your question has been answered.
8500 Auto Mode adjusts X band only.
On newer Escorts with GPS, Auto Mode works on X and K.
It reduces sensitivity based on your speed.

On user manuals "auto" is not linked with any band...

City mode can be lowX, NoX or No XK...

An explanation here how modern Auto Mode works.
Escort doesn't share details freely.

You've seen this thread, and have an explanation that the non GPS 8500 only adjusts X band on Auto mode.
What is still not clear?

I'm not sure what effects Auto has on X Band without GPS.
Escort language says it "intelligence" helps reduce false alerts.
Mystery.....

I have an older Passport that does not have GPS. This is what the manual says about the three modes; Highway, Auto, Auto No X. The detector is definitely quieter in Auto but it also cuts range of real signals. I run the detector with X off in the menu.

Auto mode on that detector certainly does affect K band, if it see pairs of a door opener that are at very similar in frequency. Bel/Escort also said that auto mode will slightly decrease K band detection, but I don't remember any tests that proved that out but it makes sense. There were quite a few detectors that were tested around that time and I dont know if any of them did a comprehensive K band test in different modes.

With that said, your X50 was never Great on Kband, and after all these years is it working properly?

If you need a good K band detector for low cost - I would get a Gen1 V1 and not worry about the auto mode on the X50.
