I'm super excited about this, I'm so sick of BSM's and I was so impressed by the SEMA demo/interview. But one thing that's always bothered me about dashboard radar detectors is why are we still stuck in the 1980's paradigm of hanging a badged, Christmas tree on our windshields where the offending LEO can clearly see it. Not only that, but also putting it on display for thieves, at this point you might as well consider yourself a department store advertising your wares. I know Radenso will be working on the remote unit, but there is no doubt that will be MUCH more expensive. Why not consider a remote screen, sell it as an optional addon, and consider selling the main unit with very little markings on it, or maybe even none. I know Valentine has had a remote screen for a long time, and Escort tried it as well. The ability to put the actual RD into full dark mode and not have to fiddle with taking it off every single time I get out of my car, as well as not having to piss off the LEO who pulled me over would be great.

First off.....….with theia, your worries of being pulled over are totally unfounded.:p That's the point of buying it right?

But, lets say the unthinkable happens.

I'm sure there will be an app where you can use your smartphone as a remote display / controller and run the detector in dark mode. As for the windshield mount...…..well...….it's a windshield mount. It has to be somewhere that it can look through both the front and back windscreens. And if it can see out then it can be seen in. You may be able to tuck it close to the headliner but it will likely still be visible to some degree and it is a large detector. I think with the processing power this will need good air cooling so hiding it in a pouch not a good option...…..plus you loose you lidar and audio would suck.

So, I think for the remote display you might as well wait for the remote.

We already have this on our list of possibilities after Theia has launched but it won’t be at launch. Don’t forget we are enthusiasts as well, both Jon and I were V1 owners before Radenso existed.

When I daily drove a WRX years ago I even torn apart the clock and hid my concealed display behind it, picture below. We have a insane amount of crazy ideas still.

If you do something similar please include the freq, I would be in for one for sure. I would even be willing to see a detachable face that I can keep on the detector or remove and place elsewhere in the car. I assume for speed that would want to be connected with a cable but wireless would be nice too. Power it locally. Anyhow, I'm sure you guys have better ideas and we will just have to see.

JBV1 works for me with my V1 and I'm sure it will with Theia, too.

Personally, I run V1 Gen1 + remote display + remote audio adapter + JBV1.

V1 attached to visor where I almost never look at it and remote display and audio boxes piggybacked together low in the center console with JBV1 phone just below my normal line of sight.

V1 stays in dark mode and both volumes are set to off on it and remote audio box.

Remote display shows all alerts silently. JBV1 shows the alerts that get by my filtering options and alerts both audibly and visually.

That way I can look down and double check what JBV1 is doing and if I have any doubts as to my phone's functionality I just reach down and turn up the volume on the remote audio adapter to rely on the native beeps and brats to alert me.

Kind of redundant, I know, but I like having a clear windshield and a low profile look, same reason I "de-winged" my Mitsubishi Evo X MR to avoid the "boy racer" look.

Tell me you didn’t wire up the Set clock button to act as Mute and the Hours and Minutes buttons as volume Up/Down. Haha

Yes, I love the way you guys think. In my younger years I tore apart a Escort custom install system, put the main box in a waterproof enclosure under the front forks and wired the display to be inside my instrument cluster of my motorcycle. Had a mute switch on the handlebars and a speaker inside the helmet. That WRX install looks really good.

So I have a dumb question for all you since @spinedoc777 mentioned putting a detector in a a box and I know others stealth install behind bumpers and I’ve even seen V1 box installs in rear seat headrests with a remote screen. 🙄 How does that cause interference and some signal loss issue when I can literally hold my hand/fingers in front of my V1 and blind it to some BSMs as they happen. Is it because a human body has a higher interference/absorption than say the plastic of a box or bumper or what? I’m too lazy to go and test different materials to see how much blocking happens.

On a good note... I am my own customer BSM filter when needed. 😂

Sure it's a trade off, that's why they have the custom installed systems with the separate components. But really my point was leaving the radar detector exactly where it is now, high up in the windshield, but simply removing all markings from it and putting the remote screen somewhere more subtle. Since the hardware is still high up in the windshield it shouldn't change anything.

That's what I did with my V1.

I'm not a huge fan of using my smartphone in all honestly, I'd rather have a hardware screen separate from everything else. I tried Escort's system for a while and just hated using my smartphone to fiddle with it. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just something like Valentine has. With hiding it on the windshield, there shouldn't be any need to if it's unmarked and unlit, I've already got a box up there for security and one for the vehicles concierge service, one more box shouldn't be out of place.

The idea crossed my mind but I had a switch on my arm rest for that, it was faster and easier than reaching up to the clock.

No, I knew what your intent was, I just went a bit off on a tangent with that since it got a bit detailed topic wise anyway. Haha

On a related note for you, chances are good @SquirrelMaster ”might” decide to update his V1 remote display project he did and create new codebase for the hardware to work with Theia once the API and dev info comes out for it.

Yes. You’re mostly water, which is murder on RF; the higher the frequency the more the attenuation. A bit of thin cardboard on a Kleenex box or some fabric in a ball cap isn’t going to have the same impact.
