Hi guys. Came across a pretty good deal on a 9500ci, complete kit with box and everything. Wondering if it’s still worth it in 2020 now that the technology is about 15 years old. I would obviously update the firmware to the latest available. Anyone out there running an updated firmware 9500ci in an urban setting? How is the overall experience?

Had an idea to run a decently newish gen 1 V1 with concealed display, at full mute with x turned off and place the concealed display near the CI display panel to “kinda” get the arrow functionality. Might be overkill, and probably will end up just getting a RL360c, just weighing my options.

There's no advantage of running a gen 2 with the CI. The gen 2 can hold its own. The CI is still a great choice for areas that are Ka only.

It's still got great range on Ka, but it lacks modern BSM filtering so you're gonna get a ton of false alerts on K band.

The jammers are also definitely out of date too.

A V1 Gen2 or RL360c solo would be better than a 9500ci / V1 Gen1 combo.

For the laser side, ALP's or even TMG's would be the way to go over the 9500ci's jammers.

Thanks for your insight, Vortex! I was worried about the BSM falses. I have a 9500ix with latest firmware and it gets Honda/Acura falses regularly. Very happy with it otherwise! I wish firmware updates could help more with those. This just seems like such a good deal ($400) I might just end up buying it and installing it on my daily driver SUV to at least try out for a bit and possibly also get a RL360c for my Cobra considering 95% of my spirited driving is done in that vehicle😂. I can live with turning K and X off in my city, and then throw up the RL360c In the SUV if I take a road trip I suppose.
What do you think? For $400, should I jump on it for the hell of it?

Yeah firmware updates can only do so much. It’s like trying to download an update to get an 8 year old phone to be comparable with a new one. Just not gonna happen. :)

You seem pretty committed to the 9500ci. If it’s that or nothing, sure, a Ka only 9500ci is better than nothing.

That said, given the difficulty of installing custom installed RDs and LJ’s, I personally would stay away from investing in something that is out of date. It’s not like a windshield mount RD where you can easily swap it out for a newer one when the time comes.

Plus the police in TX are using lidar guns the 9500ci can’t jam so you’re gonna be behind the 8 ball from day 1.

Is it better than nothing? I guess. Is it smart to invest in something better designed for the threats you’ll encounter? I think so. Ultimately it’s your money and your decision though.

I have done a little bit more research and have found many 9500ci users to be unhappy with their performance as of the past few years. With that and everything else being considered, I’m going to pass on the CI and stick to my original plan and get 1 RL360c and change it between cars as needed. The main reason I was drawn to the CI is because it’s a built in and clean install, and have always wanted one haha. I’ll wait until I come across a good deal on a newer installed unit.

Yeah makes sense.

If you want an affordable custom installed detector, if you go for the ALP for laser, you can add on a Net Radar DSP for $650. I know it's not $400, but it'll give you long range like the Escort M3's, plus better BSM filtering for the times you need it. I'm not a huge fan of adding radar to the ALP because of the interface compromises, but that's an option too.

I still have a 9500ci on dedicated Ka duty, edges out my V1G1 all the time, and is a quick confirmation on legitimate hits

Been using the 9500ci for about 8 years in two different vehicles. Good on the Ka band but many many falses due to BSM. There are no real updates that will make any difference. You have GPS lock outs but doesn't help on the highway with all the BSM's. I too put it in because I have a convertible with the top down most of the time and don't want something stolen.

I have it and have turned off K band and with Ka it's pretty darn good. I have two other cars without radar though. As I get older I guess I don't drive as fast, so haven't really felt the need to get another one... maybe one day but then again... maybe not :)

I'm pretty happy with mine, still have K on but I took some bands off that aren't in use here and I let the GPS lockout memory sort out the BSM's knowing there is a small risk if I ever hit a real K. Virtually everything here is Ka though for LEO. It's actually pretty quiet. I run it with Waze also to get the best of both worlds.

Hi guys, little update on this. I did end up purchasing it for $420 shipped. Got it in, cleaned up and organized all the wiring, bench tested it with a spare 12v battery I had laying around. performed the software updates (trouble free, thankfully). Tested it out and It worked flawlessly with no warning messages or errors. Also, to my surprise it was a late 2015 manufactured 9500ci Platinum with 4 laser shifter pro receivers, and EVERYTHING was included, no cut wires or anything. All install accessories and box included, aswell as the original reciept from a european auto service center showing the $2,300 price from only a few years ago. He also had some mechanical work done on his BMW that was quite expensive, and it did not show any labor for the install on the CI, so I'm guessing they threw in the install with the other work performed.

Ended up putting it on eBay at a very aggressive price (compared to other kits that were currently listed) to see if it would get any hits. I told myself if it didn't sell after a couple weeks, I would install it into my Daily driver expedition and enjoy it for at least a few months. But, after only a few days, I recieved and accepted a $750 offer, and now its in the hands of a gentleman near Chicago.

A day or two after that, I was browsing Facebook marketplace and came across a used/like new RL360c with 1.4 and everything included, and picked it up for $715 shipped/insured from a guy in Indianapolis. Not an incredible deal by any means, but the tax savings were enough to justify it IMO. The gentleman I purchased it from claims he never registered it, so I don't think there will be any issues if I register it and need to send it in for service later on down the road. Can anyone confirm this?

I also ordered a brand new BlendMount mirror mount...an absolute necessity IMO!

After getting the CI and playing with it in person, mocking up different locations for the control and display panels, I definitely would love to own a 360ci. Such a cool kit and nothing beats that discreet and custom install look. Maybe sometime in 2021 I will set aside some cash and get one if possible. But for now, I'm looking forward to the RL360C! Comes in on 11/30 and I cannot wait!

I recently purchased a vehicle with a 9500ci custom install (with laser shifters and the bluetooth module; I'm not sure if either of those are optional) installed. I'm in a Ka area with some K band (and no laser to speak of), and the auto-learn is really a nice feature.

The bluetooth, escort Live is a great add on. the laser shifters are included with all 9500ci kits. Not entirely sure on the details as far as what is standard and what is added/upgraded but IIRC, the four laser shifter pro receiver heads was an upgrade or standard with the platinum kits. Again, not entirely sure so don't quote me on that.

I'm having an issue with my 9500ci after updating the firmware (which hadn't been updated in many years): The VOL button no longer works, and GPS lock isn't occurring. I reset to factory options, and still no luck.

Without a VOL button, I can't do VOL/BRT to access settings, which isn't ideal.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot?

I tried to update my firmware several years ago because I found it available on the web site and figured maybe it would help with the BSM's or some other improvement. I wasn't able to successfully download and install. I called for Escort tech support. When I finally got someone, it was one of the most rude and obnoxious persons I have ever dealt with. They were chastising me for trying to do what I was doing. I swore off buying any more Escort products after that. I'm curious just what your outcome was with any downloads.

Unfortunately, Escort has a history of forgetting about products once they're purchased. I had a 360ci system (their flagship) and I think we only saw one update shortly after that system hit the market.

With my Bel STiR, I'm just happy it still works and I'm not doing anything to mess it up. Outdated, but still great with Ka band!

I was able to use the Windows application to update via USB, which was fairly painless.

And though my VOL button no longer works, I reset again to default settings, and my GPS lock is back. I was also able to turn off K band, though I may bring that back with the GPS functioning again.
