Hi all,
Just wanted to introduce myself. Glad to have found this forum, so much great information here!

I’ve run the original Escort Passport 8500 and 8500 X50, and haven’t used the X50 for the last few years (too many false alarms.)

I just picked up a Uniden DFR8 for $69, after a sale on Amazon and some unused gift cards. Haven’t used it much, but will be embarking on a road trip to Pigeon Forge, TN in the next few weeks, hope to put it through its paces.

I may end up swapping for the gps DFR9. I was always quite happy with my 8500, I think this DFR series has placed me back in that quality of defector, hopefully a bit better!

Welcome to the forum @Andrew IBSP . I've been over to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg a couple times this year and speed enforcement was very active in that area - probably the most active I've ever seen it with the Gatlinburg PD.
Appreciate the heads up!

Welcome to the forum. The DFR8 is a capable detector. The DFR9 will probably help you keep your sanity. If you're going through VA, be aware that detectors are illegal, but it's probably a minimal risk. I don't remember how stealth the DFR detectors are. Hopefully, someone who remembers will chime in.

Thanks for the tips. I watched most of Vortex’s overview and while the DFR9 was detected by spectre at max sensitivity, it should be fairly stealth for a journey through VA.

My setup includes a dedicated phone running waze on WiFi.

The conditions were just too good to pass up: I ended up returning the DFR8 for a new R3 for $230 after use of gift cards. Looking to hardwire next to my dash cam on an eBay permanent mount.

Welcome! Great choice on upgrading to the R3. I see you have an Android device--you really should read up on JBV1 and Highway Radar. They are two great apps that are way better than Waze for many reasons. Much longer alert ranges, aircraft alerts, heat maps and more. And you can run Waze at the same time too for navigation.

Thanks for the tips, I’ll look into them. My primary phone is an iPhone, but I use this old galaxy for maps over WiFi on long trips.

Hi Andrew welcome to the forum. Do you fly that Bad Boy?
I wish. I’m not a pilot, I just always loved the F-14.

So I recently returned from a ~1,300 mile round trip to Tennessee. Using the R3, highway radar on a dedicated android and waze on my primary iPhone. NJ/PA/MD/WV/VA/TN mostly on I-81.
R3 did great with excellent range. Very impressed with highway radar, I loved the advanced notice and was alerted to a police chopper taking speeds (confirmed visually after the alert).

Passed multiple Virginia State Police and local VA Police on I-81 without any obvious notice of my detector.

Welcome!

I'm a fellow driver out of NJ. I too had the Escort Passport X50 haha.

We're glad to have you!
