Uniden R7 update, when can we expect it?

Okay, we have seen a "coming soon" update for the R7 here, and I'll believe it when I see it come to light. I have been around for quite a while, and have seen more than my share of vaporware and vapor-firmware over the years. The last real firmware update came in 03/19/2020 v1.29. So, while I have some small hope for it, I'll not hold my breath.

Also, in the past I said I was disappointed in Uniden because they seem to let another company design and build and create their firmware. Someone said that Uniden RD's are not just relabeled RD's, and just have their name stamped on the RD. So what exactly do they do? THEMSELVES. They ask for a new RD. They give a general idea of what they want the RD to be capable of. Hand the other company a bag of name plates, and step back. Do THEY create the Firmware? Do THEY create the hardware? Nope. They give suggestions, and nope for the best. If they are going to let others do EVERYTHING for them, why not ask us, the end users, what we really want? There are real masters of RD users here. Hundreds of years of combined knowledge. Uniden reps have all but disappeared here it seems. I am a Uniden guy. I don't jump from ship to ship very easily. Uniden needs to get off it's laurels, and start to ACTUALLY get 100% involved in their products again. Create and innovate. Not just calling the other
companies and asking how things are going.

In total honesty, i would really appreciate it if we wouldn’t go there. Sure, Uniden isn’t very fast on the firmware updates but we don’t know their side of things. It could be several things, all them pretty legitimate. I suspect they just really want to get it right. It isn’t vaporware, we have heard from several people that have been testing it. The RD works pretty well right now anyway. It just looks bad to be bad mouthing the manufacturer here. We should take the high road and just wait. I can see your side of things, I really can but I really think they are doing their best with what they have and we should show some appreciation, or at least some understanding of that.

Plus "in the past" Uniden has been pretty forthcoming with feature requests and general tuning of the detectors. Just in the past few months or so their go-to guy and the guy that RDF fans counted on, found himself a better job - or so they say.
Good possibility things will get back to normal - especially after all the virus stuff evens out.

I will be very happy if we get a firmware update with a solid implementation of "autolearn" before the end of 2020.

I'm still excited that we even received a teaser that it was in beta testing. I'd rather wait for a thoroughly tested and stable firmware release then receive something that possibly could make things worse. Uniden certainly doesn't want to see the fallout on RDF if the firmware were released early and plagued with bugs.

Yeah this is a bit aggressive. Uniden is running against Valentine in making the best-of dash mounted RDs. I’m not of the belief that they’re not doing anything and selling shell products.

I think they’re well aware of the fact that they have a good part of the market and I doubt they’re interested in having that diminish.

Lots going on in recent times regarding RD firmware and accuracy - quite positive that they’re on top of it and want to continue pushing updates and products. Give them some time

If you really were a "Uniden guy" then you would know that there is a beta FW out right now and it is being tested with. Uniden has NEVER been fast with their FW updates so why is now any different? As long as they keep coming in I see no reason to complain at all. All of the R series detectors have preformed wonders even without constant updates. At least they have not had a terrible initial release like Escort did with the Redline 360

There are already too many responses to this useless thread. The OP should read the other threads already beaten to death on this topic. The FW comes when it’s ready. Complaining about something like this accomplishes nothing other than to discourage manufacturers from sharing information about upcoming products and features.

Good God... enough already. It will be ready when it is ready. Frankly, my R7 is pretty awesome and I'd rather they not screw it up by rushing this release. The firmware upgrade like this with major functionality changes is pretty complex in embedded software (read: very tight hardware resources) so coding it requires real programming talent. This isn't like writing a big bloated Windows program in VB.

Also, on the what are they really doing front, the R7 is Uniden's intellectual property. My understanding is that this is built for them by a third party at their direction. Same as your iPhone. Nobody has the capability to single shop something this complex anymore, so the whole argument is a waste of time. The thing works really well.

P.S. You may want to change your font to something more "default" or you may tick off some of the members.

They have exclusively from Attowave who owns the IP.

Attowave also builds the DFR9, DFR7, R1, R3, K40, Radenso XP, etc.
They build lots of detectors for lots of people and own the IP on all of them.

I'll take your word for it since I'm no expert, but I haven't seen any indication online that Attowave owns the IP and they aren't mentioned in the R7 manual.
