Hi, I have moved from my previous escort detectors to Uniden. I hope this was a good move. I want to buy a used R3, will I be able to install firmware and will the gps function even though I won’t register with Uniden? Thanks

Welcome to the forum! You shouldn’t have any issues with GPS or firmware upgrades. Registration is not a requirement to download the files from the Uniden Support site.

Thanks, I needed that. Is the mirror mount a good idea? I’m already wired as I had another brand mounted, but I’ll have to purchase a new Mount unless it’s placement isn’t good on an R3 for some reason.

as long as the mirror mount still provides a "clear view" to the satellites. I would try it with the suction cup mount first. There are some car scenarios where the designers crammed all sorts of interfering EMF devices in the bundle around the mirror. That said, I'm a suction cup mount, just under the profile of the RVM, and I have no GPS problems. From the rear, it looks like the mirror has the Onstar key pad and I run Dark mode.

A lot of people run their R3's and other detectors using a mirror mount. As long as you have a clear view, you should be good to go. Welcome aboard!

Thanks, until now I have had gps as a separate unit.

Thanks, I am new to NM, so I’ll be checking to see if it’s considered an obstruction. Thank you.

Welcome. I’m occasionally in NM, mirror mounts and stuff mounted on your windshield is perfectly legal. As well as radar detectors and laser jammers. So enjoy!

Would someone be able to tell me why some Uniden R3 detectors have “dsp” attached to the description?

All Uniden R3's are DSP.

The Uniden R3 is NOT an analog radar detector, it is a Digital detector so it uses DSP (Digital Signal Processing). All R3s are digital RDs.

You mentioned you were previously using a standalone GPS. Are you under the impression that you can access the R3's GPS for things like navigation? You can not. The GPS is for marking fixed K false sources and using things like Speed Muting.

No, not trying to access the R3s GPS. I was simply stating that I used a Garmin separately for navigation. I’m interested in whether Uniden somehow disables your GPS capability on a given R3 if you don’t subscribe or allow the unit to interact with the technology. I’m looking to purchase a used, second unit for another car and was curious to know why some R3s were described in the title/description as “dsp” tagged on. I thought perhaps there was a separate model of R3 doctor being distinguishable from model to model. Thanks.

Welcome! I had an R3 for a few years and loved it. I Upgraded to R7 for the directional addition, but R3 is still solid.

Some people just like acronyms and full descriptions. On For Sale sites some people go whole hog and list every little detail (even some the manufacture doesn't even highlight in ads) and some people just say "Uniden R3 For Sale" leaving it at that. To my knowledge they are all relatively the same with the exception that some have been updated with the latest Firmware already. Uniden is NOT Escort, the R3 requires no subscription, it fully functions right out of the box and has all current features as long as it is running the latest and greatest Firmware which is FREE to download and install.

Thanks, this is what I was needing. “Not escort” says it all. Regards, john
