This past weekend I received a warning on Escort Live that my subscription had expired. Of course, it occurred just as I was involved in two days of heavy driving.

Anyway, I went to the Escortradar.com site, logged in and the only thing I could find there was “Software + Services,” “Defender Subscription 1 yr NA” or 3 yr. I paid $24.95 for the one year and went through the email process of activation. 48 hours later Escort Live was still giving me errors that my subscription had expired.

I then poked around on Escort Live and found a menu that allows me to re-subscribe there, only now the cost was $49.95! I went though that process, paid $49.95 …. And still I am receiving error messages that my Escort Live subscription has expired.

Help! I am now $75 in the hole and still do not have a functioning Escort Live.

My system is a iX Ci Platform with ShifterMax. I run Escort Live on iPhone.

Unfortunately it seems they have not had customer support people working from home during COVID-19 and as a result call volume now is very high. I just called and was #15 in cue. Fortunately they do have a call back feature. Awaiting my call back.

So that's the charge for the Defender Database which is separate from Escort Live.

The Defender Database covers RLC / speed cam alerts via GPS that are built directly into the detector. That you get with a short initial trial and then you gotta pay to get updates.

Escort Live does the phone integration for cloud alerts and while they do have an option to pay, the keep automatically giving people free extensions on their subscription every year to make sure they don't lose customers altogether. Luckily if you're connected to Live, you also get the latest RLC / speedcam alerts via the cloud, but if you don't use your phone, you'll be reliant on the Defender DB built into the detector.

So just to be clear since there's two different paid services available.

I was not sure the Defender offer on the Escort website was in fact Escort Live however I could find no other way to re-subscribe to Escort Live via the Escort website. If anyone from Escort is reading this, your website needs an update and clearer descriptions of what the offers there are for. I still see no way to re-subscribe to Escort Live via their website. That said, IMO, for the cost of a iX Ci Platform, having to pay for a Escort Live subscription is unfortunate.

As a side note, in my opinion Escort’s warning of speed cameras (via Escort Live) is very poorly executed. It seems Escort warns of cameras within a certain distance bubble from my car regardless of the fact that I am not travelling in the direction of the camera. For example when driving on a highway with local cross traffic overpasses, I often get speed camera warnings regarding cameras on the cross traffic overpasses perpendicular to my direction of travel, not cameras on the highway at all. Waze however seems to factor in direction of travel.

Thank you (love your YouTube channel BTW).

Agreed, though this is also an issue with other brands like Uniden, Whistler, etc. when they use a simple radius-based alert (ie. X feet from the speedcam) and so you'll get alerts when driving past them on the highway.

Waze takes into account what road you're on and has extra logic to filter out alerts for city streets when you're on the highway, but since RD's don't have a full map of the country built-in, they rely on the simpler method which results in more false alerts.

FWIW I've been experiencing a bug lately where my original Escort Live accounts started telling me that my EL subscription expired even when connected to a detector, and the detector stopped showing speed limits too.

I just created a new EL account and pairing again, and afterwards I had a premium EL subscription features again. Not sure if this was intended or not, it's always been my understanding that having a EL detector means getting EL features for lifetime.

I had the same problem with Escort Live saying my subscription was expired and I called support over it. They asked me to logout/login Escort Live and it was working again. If you haven't tried that yet - give it a shot.

Ohhhh yeah you're right, I forgot about that. That started happening a few months ago and logging out/in usually fixed it. I'm surprised that's still an issue!

Yeah I hadn't been driving my Model S much until 2 weeks ago and that was the first time I hit it. I should've tried logging out and in again, but oh well, now I get twice the Escort newsletters

I have the same situation and tried that, signing out and back in and it didn't change anything. So I finally gave up. Spending $75 was enough for me. Trying to just get in the que is impossible. I guess later when the RL360c orders and backorder complaints slow down I may try again. But for now I'm sort of screwed, LOL.

If logging out/in does not work, try registering EL with a different email ( even a "made up" email as the app does not validate email addresses). Others that have had this problem, found this solution to work; This solution avoids the need to call Escort Customer Service.

I used EL for the free year that came with the detector. Besides it trying to cook my phone battery, it really didn't do anything for me. I let it lapse, and no plans to renew. The crowd sourced alerts - at least, this is how it seemed to me - were no better than what you get for free on Waze.

I hold a very low opinion of Waze because it's terrible at navigation. 1 out of every 10 phone calls we get in my dispatch center are drivers who are lost... #1 thing they're saying is "waze told me to" turn here, turn there, whatever.

On the highway, yeah it warns me about cops that other people see, so it's useful sometimes. That's where it ends for me.

SIGINT is king. Add in a copilot with field glasses, a digital scanner and we're gold.

Unfortunately, the money you spent is lost. Even though your EL subscription says it's expired, if you have purchased your RD from an Escort or an approved Escort retailer, your subscription will be reactivated, at no extra charge. You just have to call customer service.

I spoke to Escort Customer Service and found out a few interesting things.

First is that it was my fault that I incorrectly purchased Defender as the Escort website’s page that I made the purchase on clearly says (in red) that this is not for Escort Live.

Second is that if someone has purchased an Escort Live capable Escort radar detector, Escort Live subscriptions are free, assuming you call Escort. This is great news except for the fact that Escort has a back-log of service related calls during the COVID-19 pandemic. Not sure if Escort actually had customer service people working remotely from home during the pandemic. It appears not (or not enough) to handle the call volume.

Third is the Customer Service rep said that IF the radar detector and Escort Live are used daily the subscription should auto-renew (at no charge). I drive this car on weekends. I guess every seven days is not enough.

Lastly and most curiously, the Customer Service rep said Escort cannot refund me the $50 I paid via Escort’s iOS app for the Escort Live subscription (which should have been free) because and I quote, “that $50 goes to Apple (or Google) not Escort.”

This amazes me! Apparently if this is true, Escort hired someone to create an app (the Escort Live app) which will actually collect money from Escort Live radar detector owners for a service which is otherwise free and Escort has no means of refunding the money!!! This amazes me because Escort Live knows when it’s connected via Bluetooth to a Escort Live capable Escort radar detector. The radar detector’s serial number shows up in Escort Live!

Assuming Escort wanted (for whatever reason) to allow Apple and Google to collect $50 from their customers … and those funds do not go to Escort, it should have been very simple for the App Developer to filter our, “this person is a Escort customer because they are connected to Escort radar detector,” therefore do not allow the transaction to go through. And then display a screen “Call Escort for a free subscription update.”

That’s my opinion. Am I nuts?

So that reeks! So does that include the Defender data base as well? This auto renewal -how can that be, when it clearly says on the subscription option selection in the EL menu, how much more time is left on ones subscription? I clearly purchased a 3 year subscription to something, yet when I pull up the menu selection of "Subscription" it says that I have 8 months remaining on my time before it runs out. Why doesn't it show that I have 3 years left? I give up. Ill call Monday morning but wont expect much from the agent. The whole idea of a subscription to a service is ridiculous, especially after paying $750 for their detector. of it all, their website is awful. The only option I see is to register your new product, then put in your S/N and code. To go and check the status of you account is just a dream- you cant do t! So I try and register the device under a new email acct-that doesn't work, it says that my unit has already be registered under another email address, no shit-so that option is BS too. That should be part of the purchase price, if for no other reason than to avoid these PITA problems. Ugghhh.

My understanding (which may be incorrect, but this is the way it was explained to me) is that subscriptions to EL and Defender database are handled differently.

EL is free to Escort radar detector customers whose RD support EL, however the subscription may expire after a year if you do not use it daily in which case you must call Escort to get your free renewal.

For customers who want to run EL but who do NOT have an Escort radar detector which supports EL, or a competitor’s RD, they must pay for a EL subscription, which is why the app has a payment function.

Defender’s functionality is built into EL assuming your phone with EL running is actually connected to your Escort RD.

If you disconnect EL from the RD you will not have the EL Defender functionality UNLESS you pay for the Defender subscription and update your RD downloading the Defender database to the RD.

I suggest calling Escort Customer service and choose the "call back" option. You will accomplish more by speaking directly to them than any other way.

From a moderator on Escort's forum:
Post automatically merged:

My response:

My understanding is that businesses, non-profits, or individuals develop apps usually by hiring an app developer. Thus the business (or non-profit, individual) is in control of what functionality is included in an app, or excluded; not the platform host (Google or Apple in this case) per se. The next step is the app is submitted to the platform and approved (or denied) by the same.

The data exists within EL to know it is currently connected to a EL compatible radar detector. It’s a simple logic statement for the coder to include, “if connected to an authorized device do not process transaction, instead display message “contact Escort via telephone at this number ….”

If Escort developed the app (or hired the app developer) then Escort should take responsibility for the app’s features, functionality and financial transactions that occur via the app.

Escort Live was a prominent factor in my decision to purchase a iX Ci Platform system. It’s disappointing that (as it seems) Escort takes no responsibility for their own app. It’s not about the $50. I can afford that (after all, I have an iX Ci Platform, which is not a small financial investment). It is fully about the customer service experience of Escort’s app charging me for something that is otherwise free … and then have Escort take no responsibility for that transaction.

Whether or not the money was collected by a platform (not Escort) is aside from the point. Whether or not Escort allows all the money to remain with a platform is also aside from the point. When I spent the $50 it was for an Escort service & functionality, not Apple’s.
