Both HW2 should get this last update. If a unit was not able to get the update for the past 2 weeks this update will probably be its last.

We had to talk corporate into continuing updates on the old units since no notice was given. I told them it was not right and although it's normal in this industry to stop supporting units after a few years we need to be a leader and not a follower.

If your unit did not have the update available check again but note it is probably the last update on the older hardware.

It has been a long time since I last downloaded new Control Box Firmware, so please bear with me as I ask the following questions and ask for anyone's advice.....

Car #1 Control Box with HW.2 YOP:12-2014 has Control Box f/w 5.5.6/8.5 rlsd: 07/18/2019

Car #2 Control Box with HW.2 YOP:06-2015 has Control Box f/w 5.5.6/8.5 rlsd: 07/18/2019

It appears that both Control Boxes were manufactured just prior to the original cutoff date where certain HW.2 Control Boxes would still be able to accept the new f/w 5.6.3/8.8

BRD mentions in his post above that he was able to convince ALP to provide one final/last Control Box f/w download, that being f/w 5.6.3/8.8, for the older HW.2 Control Boxes (manufactured prior to July 2015, per the 08/13/2020 ALP News release).

When I enter Car #1's Control Box serial number in the box for the ALP Control Box firmware update and then correctly put the verifying number in the required box and click on download, I am able to successfully download what is supposed to be f/w 5.6.3/8.8 on to a thumb drive.

Question: How do I know, or confirm, that the f/w I downloaded on the thumb drive is definitely f/w 5.6.3/8.8 prior to attempting to download it on to Car #1's Control Box?

Question: If I attempt to download what is, or what may be, f/w 5.6.3/8.8 on to Car #1's Control Box, if the new f/w download is unsuccessful, does my attempt to download the new f/w 5.6.3/8.8 wipe out/erase the old f/w 5.5.6/8.5 which is currently in the Control Box? Or does the old f/w 5.5.6/8.5 still remain in the Control Box?

Thank you in advance for any helpful advice which may be offered.

1st Q - you don't really know. I save hard copies of all histrorical firmware to my PC.

When I compare the file hashes of what I can download now for my 2 x HW.1 CPU with my previous copy of 5.5.8, they are identical, so I know what I can download today is still 5.5.8.

2nd Q - 5.5.8 was the last previous firmware to 5.6.3, so you might end up upgrading the old 5.5.6 to 5.5.8. If the firmware you're trying to install is identical to what's already on the CPU, it won't update

Hope that helps

Thanks winterbrew!

Wow! An answer within a few minutes from half way around the world! Really, Thanks!

Re: #1 I do have the present f/w which is in the control box on a thumb drive from when I installed it last July 2019, so if it ever does get wiped out of the control box I can download it again. Also, f/w 5.5.6/8.5 is 459 KB on the old thumb drive, and what I just downloaded on to a thumb drive, supposedly f/w 5.6.3/8.8, is also 459 KB. Other than that info, I just have not been able to verify/confirm that what I just downloaded is actually the new f/w 5.6.3/8.8 I guess I'll just try to download it and see what happens. If it loads successfully, I can verify the f/w via control buttons and voice on my control box. If it messes up the old f/w I can just reload the old f/w in to the control box.

Re: #2 I never downloaded f/w version 5.5.7/8.6 nor f/w version 5.5.8/8.7 I don't remember why I did not download them...I must be getting that oldtimer's disease! If I should not be able to successfully download the newest/latest f/w 5.6.3/8.8, and although I can most likely fall back to my present f/w of 5.5.6/8.5 from my old thumb drive, I wish I could somehow be able to get and download f/w 5.5.8/8.7 which was the last f/w version released prior to the latest version f/w 5.6.3/8.8 If the ALP f/w download page doesn't download the latest f/w 5.6.3/8.8 for me, maybe it will download the previous version f/w 5.5.8/8.7 (Sorry! Too many numbers...Hope I don't confuse you!)

I'll try the download/update process tomorrow. I'll shoot a short post to you and let you know what happened.

Thanks again for your reply and info. Take Care!

Well, this sucks. Mine is from September 2014 and I'm located in Dragon Eye city, Canada. Guess I better go find my wallet.

We're not getting any deals on the CPU replacements like BRD is doing for his US customers.

YOP 2015-04. Did my unit make the cut?

Like others, I find the lack of notice on this frustrating.

Many ALP Users with Radar opted to upgrade to the HW4 CPU's which will have advanced radar options sometime in the future. For someone that only wants laser jamming or basic radar integration these systems have lots of life and will make excellent choices at these super discounted prices. A new CPU is $329.95 so at $99.95 its a way to get into an ALP inexpensively.

Comments like the one above about HW2 having "lots of life" gave us a false sense of security on the longevity of HW2. I understand that the issue is that there are really two "HW2s" but this is exactly why a hardware reversion should be marked as HW2.1 or RevB or something along those lines unless the manufacturer intends on supporting both versions for the same period of time.

I do appreciate @BestRadarDetectors attempt to solve this in the most customer friendly way possible, so this is not a knock on him. But it does expose the limitations of dealing with a middleman vs having the manufacturer directly engaging in the forms.

Yes, Your unit was manufactured before July 2015 so going forward you will not receive new updates on your CPU but you will still get the current update so you are getting notice as of now that going forward you will need to update your unit.

😢 Thanks for the info

Any updated information on how much longer newer HW2 units will be supported or if there are any additional cutoff dates? I'm not excited about getting into the GPS nonsense, and so would consider trading my HW2 with someone on here for a newer HW2, but of course I don't want to end up in the same situation a year from now.

Depends on how threats change and what needs to be done to keep everyone protected. If you take a look at AL's history.... AntiLaser G8 (Generation 8, 2006); AntiLaser G9 (Generation 9, 2009); AntiLaser RX (Generation 10, 2010); AntiLaser RX2 (Generation 11, 2011); AntiLaser PRIORITY (Generation 12, 2013)

Jammer models used to get around 1-3 years of life before being replaced. This is also the same with other manufactures... ZR3 -> ZR4 -> ZR5, Etc. Escort support lasted no more than 1-3 years if you even got any updates on some of those units.

The HW1's got 7 Years and early HW2's received 5+ years which is really amazing for this industry in which technology is always changing. You are also only having to update the CPU which is costing at most $149.95 (US Customers) verse buying a new system with our competitors systems.

$149.95 USD = $197.97 CDN as of today's rates. We're paying $280, plus around $25 shipping, plus provincial tax. We're at around $343.52 for ON members all-in.
Yeah, I'd rather have BRD's prices.

@jkz need to check your CPU manufacturer date to see if it's being discontinued. Also I would go ahead and update the firmware when you get a chance.

BRD, I will be ordering two new HW4 Control Boxes/CPUs from you in the near future.

In the meantime, I have attempted, for the last three days, to download f/w 5.6.3/8.8 to each of my two ALP systems. The Control Boxes/CPUs are dated YOP 2014-12 and YOP 2015-6. Yes, they are both the old HW2 version and, originally, you stated the old HW2s and the HW1s would no longer obtain updates from ALP.

(I was able to successfully upgrade my two ALP Control Boxes/CPUs from f/w 5.5.6 to f/w 5.5.8.)

However, in your post above, you state "Both HW2 should get this last update". I assume you refer to the f/w 5.6.3/8.8 release.

BRD, do you know if ALP corporate is still working on the f/w/5.6.3/8.8 update for the older HW2 Control Boxes/CPUs such as what I have? Is ALP corporate definitely going to release f/w 5.6.3/8.8 for the older HW2 Control Boxes/CPUs?

Please see this link on the ALPUpdate.com website: https://alpupdate.com/News

They were only able to update old HW2's from July 2015 through Early 2016 with the last update. Please take advantage of the update offer we currently have.

According to Tom.
Starting serial numbers 2&3 on the main unit are HW1
Serial numbers starting with 4 are iffy
Serial numbers starting with 5&6 are supported HW2’s. The newer version.

Not a rule, but a guideline.

Ah shit. :( I'm in the 455 range, but I could upgrade to the latest FW, so that's OK, right? TY! Mine was made in 2016-08...

Not sure how many times I have to keep stating this but units manufactured before July 2015 need to be updated to continue firmware updates.

Yeah just catching up to speed. I think it'd be helpful if you threw up a quick site on alp or whatever so people can enter in their SN and/or see that to check if they need this upgrade. I don't read every post every day and haven't for many months, so just trying to get a tldr as per above, and neither do the vast majority of people on RDF!

Just a suggestion, hopefully it's helpful
