I am finally buying a new detector after many years out of the market. Why? Because I finally got out of driving minivans and SUVs and got into a Miata. Looking at the tests, it seems the top detectors from each company give similar results. A big differentiating factor for me would then be firmware updates to keep the detectors current. Which company seems to be most committed to constantly improving their detectors? Also, is this like the phone world where a company will support a new detector for a couple of years and then stop updating them?

Hello and welcome to the forum discussions. There will be many suggestions so enjoy and pick your preferred ones. I personally love the Escort Max 360c. It has updates wirelessly every Mondays. Then the FW updates also come periodically wirelessly- of course this is if you have a wireless connection available to your automobile. I have both from my house and an interior wireless connection in my auto. I prefer Not to have to drag my laptop out to my car every time there's an update. O r worse yet have to remove my detector from my car and bring it into the house and connect it up to my computer. But these are my lazy as_ personal preferences. LOL-Just my .02 cents worth.

Sorry @ron topa I personally disagree with recommending Escort as a company that pushes out timely FW updates to fix, or improve the performance of their current detectors.

Unless they decide to change the way they do business.... they tend to release new detectors, than support their older ones. There’s no money to be made on FW updates.

That’s just the past MO of their business plan. Maybe it’ll change, but I would use cautious optimism.

That being said, Escort is one of the better ones at pushing out database updates.

Valentine doesn’t do very many updates, but the app developers are very active. They add options, but an app update doesn’t change the base performance of the detector.

That could change now that they have access to do wireless updates, but that’s a new thing for them. The jury is out on if they do updates to improve the base performance of the detector itself

Uniden and Radenso are the only 2 that have done more for updates that actually change the performance, bug fixes, and add options to the detector.

No matter which detector you look at, don’t expect you’ll get weekly, or even monthly, FW updates. It doesn’t work that way. Even the most active manufactures, like Uniden or Radenso are sporadic. 6 months.... 8 months..... maybe longer.
Uniden and Radenso are the 2 better ones for FW updates.
Escort far below the top 2.
Valentine ( only based on the V1G1 track record and how they did it then) at the bottom.

The app developers are the key to helping Valentine and they are very active. They may not have access to improve the base performance of the detector, but offer a lot of options to improve the total experience. We’ll have to see if Valentine can, or will continue with FW updates now that they can do things without sending it in. They are the last to the party, so we really do not have any long term track record to follow. I hope they do, but we need more time to see.

Escort hit one out of the park on the update for the new Redline 360 because I think they knew they had no choice! The Redline 360 was a total disaster when it was released and if they didn't do something very fast, it was going to crash and burn, so they had no choice! I still give them props for the update however because it seems to have totally transformed the new Redline 360! I'm still waiting for VR to fix the ramp and ghosting with the V1G2.

Need to mention that ecort’s DB updates = ransomware. (Ecort Live) You have to subscribe and buy them where uniden and radenso give them away for free.
And a forum member has cracked unidens DB formatting and releases frequent updates.

I haven't used the others, but have heard they're a bit involved in downloading zip files, etc, etc.
I have used VR's app/B/T system and it was seamless if a bit drawn out. I guess that's a given with B/T file transfer.
I consider a more important question is, what company is going to continue to support and upgrade their product over the future years and not keep introducing new "flavours of the month"

FW:
Ecort - Easy but Very infrequent.
Radenso - Simple but currently completely focused on developing new platform. Older platforms practically abandoned.
Uniden - Hasn’t updated older units for a while.
R3 & 7 have been updated. Updates challenging but not unmanageable. The only FW that older versions can be reinstalled if you don’t like updates.
V1 - G1) Had to be returned
G2) Just received first update
Time will tell, how things will be handled in future.

I too have an MX5
I have a couple of Uniden R series detectors that I've used in the Miata. Screen wash out and volume was a problem especially with the top down. I also have a V1 gen2 and it works well with a blendmount
