Do you take a spare detector with you when travelling? Glad I did

This morning, first day of work out of province, and loading all my perishables and valuables into my truck, I lost grip on the R7.
Flying through the air, bang of the truck side, bounce off the pavement.
Had high hopes that the neoprene case saved me yet again.
Nope.
Corner impact, knocked off front plate, crushed the display screen.
Now got about 20% of the screen lights up and is unreadable.
Detector still functions perfectly but all audio only now.
Full dark mode now.
Got it boxed up and labelled, hitting post office in the morning.
Let's see if Uniden sends it back again with another Beta Firmware for testing.

As for the title of the thread, I pulled the second R7 out of the luggage and back up and protected.
Now do I go get a back up for the backup while in AB and no sales tax.
That R3 tempting me on sale this week.:D

Depending where you are in AB, I am sure I can get you a backup if the backup fails :)

Visions has R3 refurbs $398CDN.
Hopefully they have one.
They had them in Prince George, but I chickened out.

That sucks! Sorry to hear that you broke your R7. I've only needed a backup detector 3 times in all my years of running them. Twice my first Redline-O had the cold solder issue and stopped detecting both K band and all of Ka band as well with no warning. Lucky for me I was running my V1G1 with it as my tag team or I would have been torched both times! The only other time I needed backup was just recently when my V1G2 died on me. It was no big deal however because I expected it and had my R1/Redline-O combo back up in seconds and ran them till my V1G2 was returned a week later.

I'm pouring another drink after that story. To your mostly murdered R7! Your backup was the only good news. And good thinking. On one car I kind of have built-in backup with the NRDSP front/rear. When I drive the other I keep the G1 in the glove box and the G2 on the windshield.

For my upcoming 3000mi journey I'll probably throw the G1 in the trunk. I really like running the G2 with the NRDSP in spite of knowing that could cause interference. In practice I've never seen this happen with that setup. I wouldn't run two WS mounts together. Especially ones that have been observed to interfere on RDF.

Suck man, sorry to hear. Most people don’t get it, but RDFers will surely cringe reading this one. Ouch!

I do take a spare detector now, I had a trip where my R1 went silent to all radar and didn't have a backup, someone on here was nice enough to bail me out and loan me one ... That said the other reason I have a spare with me is that I run ghetto arrows in my car and I don't want to leave an RD in my car parked at the airport, but I also don't want to drive to and from the airport without and leave it home... So therefore two detectors typically fly with me R1 and a DFR9 (and a set of laser jammers too ;) )

Sorry to hear man that’s unlucky...hopefully you get some alternative protection soon, especially if you are in Alberta...
I'm now using my backup R7.
Do I get a backup R3 for the the backup R7 until the Prime R7 returns for repair (again)?

Concrete Impact Disease has been known to be fatal to most electronics.

PS: Remember, it is not the fall that actually hurts you, it is the second bounce.

On a more serious note, how good is Uniden fixing their equipment?
Uniden did well by me as my prime R7 I broke the headphones jack getting off my motorcycle while still wired.
Fast and fixed under warranty and no return shipping charge.

Plus after the repair R7 came back with 132.140 firmware loaded.

Oh yes. On any trip I take in my wife's SUV, I will remove her R1, put it in the glove box and put in my R7 along with spare cable.

Although I've never had to use it (knock on wood), I do tend to bring my decommissioned DFR6 as a spare for longer trips. It sits in the trunk, just in case.

What a bummer to hear the concrete monster got the best of your R7 :(

From what I hear, R360c users say that their detectors will chip the concrete if they are accidentally dropped! That should have been in purple text.

Technically, it was ASS-Fault that broke it.
Uniden are built light so soft asphalt is enough to do it in.
Wimpy.

Well now I'm pissed.
Drive right across Grande Prairie to Visions to get the R3 deal because:
Website says in stock.
Phoned and response one in stock.
In store indicates one in stock.
Nothing actually in stock.

Off to Best Buy next door.
They don't sell any detectors anymore. At all.
Nowhere to pick up an R3 in town.

Off to the post office to mail the broke R7.
Down to my last spare R7 this trip.
No more woopsies allowed!
