Hi everyone!

I just bought a new Uniden R7 and am having a hell of a time with firmware updates, and fear my detector may now be messed up as a result.

I downloaded the "Uniden R Series SW Download Tool V1.28" tool to my PC from this site...

https://support.uniden.com/radar-detectors/

This also included the Firmware for the R7, which consisted of two files, "r7_v129.129.113_db191002.bin" and "DB_202000106.bin". It took several tries to get the "r7..." file to "Download" to the device, and I'm still not sure it actually fully completed because once the blue progress bar completed it started over again and then displayed a "DOWNLOAD FAILED!!!" alert. The version shows it is the latest one, but I'm not sure I buy it due to the error.

I then attempted the second step, which is to "Download" (not sure why they call it "Download" when you're UPLOADING it to the device) the other file, "DB_202000106.bin" to the device, with the "Recovery Mode" box checked. This also resulted in the same error, but this one simply will not complete at all. The blue progress bar barely starts and the error pops up (see screenshot).

Can anyone help provide some insight into how I'm supposed to successfully update the firmware on this thing? I'm temped to just send it back and buy another Escort, at least I'm able to update the firmware on that one!

Oh, and after all of this happened, my detector is giving GPS errors when I try to store false alerts.

I would try a factory reset (in the menu on the detector). Make sure your using a USB data cable. Then try again.

@ILS27L Unfortunately the Factory Reset didn't fix the issue - still getting the same alert. (BTW, is your username "ILS27L" by chance an aviation reference... ILS approach for 27 Left?)

@dudeinnz I didn't install the driver since the tool recognized the detector but let me do that anyway in order to rule it out.

I have found recently that sequence makes a difference.
Make sure the program is installed correctly(you can start it so you have this done), and the drivers are installed.
I have had recent failures to download as well.
Try connecting the R7 after the program is already opened.
Then go to folder where you UNZIPPED the R7 firmware and database folder contents. (Right click on zipped folder and choose EXTRACT ALL).
Click recovery mode button.
Start download.
If it fails, just retry.
If it fails again unplug detector from computer, reconnect it so the program recognizes it and try again.
One time it took 8 tries, others one and done.
The cable that came with the R7 works for me. You can also try a cell phone DATA cable that fits.
Good luck and don't give up.

Also you have to download the database a second time after the firmware.
FIrmware file: r7_v129.129.113_db191002.bin
Database for cameras etc: DB_20200106.bin
Remember you must EXTRACT these after you download.

@DC Fluid I've done all the things you noted, and in order. I've tried 20 times (literally) to install the GPS DB file and this tool simply will not upload it to the device. As I mentioned in my earlier post I'm not even certain the main update file actually completed properly and didn't get cut short on install. Now I have GPS errors (see photo) on my R7, and the DB on the device shows no version at all. Uniden needs to pay close attention to this tool because it needs some serious help! Not sure I can justify keeping this detector if I cannot update the Firmware. I even sent a message to their support over 24 hours ago and haven't heard a peep from them.

I would redo the main firmware. Use 129.129.113
I don't recognize the 129.129 .1023 in your picture
If it didn't say COMPLETED then it failed to fully load.
Try this file...
The DB USA_format.bin is from a member here that adds to the latest Uniden DB any new or missing items that haven't been updated yet. Try that instead of DB_202001106.bin
Again, download and unzip it before loading.
Do the firmware first!

@DC Fluid I managed to get further by unplugging all other USB devices from my computer. The main firmware bin file got all the way to the GPS DB part of the install then crapped out!

I then tried to upload the "DB USA_format.bin" file and it too crapped out, just like the firmware when it got to the part of the install that dealt with the GPS DB. Here's a video showing the attempts...

And for the record, yet I tried multiple times disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable. This appears to potentially be an issue with the GPS DB on this device. Might be a lemon.

Do you have a access to a Windows computer? If so, I suggest trying to update on that instead. There seems to be a lot more problems updating on a iOS computers.

Did you ever get a COMPLETE message when loading the r7_v129.129.113_db191002.bin file?
That's a must before anything else.
You can try recovery mode on & Off.
I will try myself right now and make a video.

@Brainstorm69 Yes, I tried on both a PC and a Mac, no joy on either. I already ordered another one from Amazon. Once I get it, if I'm able to update the Firmware without issue I'll simply send this one back. If I have the same issues with the new one I'll have to assume their software is simply garbage and move on to Valentine or Escort. I'm hoping it's a lemon.

@DC Fluid No, I got no "COMPLETE" message at all, just the alert you see in the video when it got to the part where it attempted to install the GPS DB.

I also tried with Recovery Mode on and off. No change.

The video shows the tool on my Mac but I get the same results on two different PCs (Windows machines) and the Mac.

Strangely enough, we've had people come on here who can't get it to update, and it ultimately ends up being a USB cable issue. I wouldn't think that's the case here from your description, as it seems to start the process but die in the middle. How many different cables have you tried? Are you positive you are using a data cable rather than a charging cable?

@DC Fluid 100% positive I'm using data cables. I have a ton of them and tried three different ones, including the one it came with (which is a data cable). I do find it strange that it consistently craps out at the GPS DB processes AND gives a GPS Error on the detector itself. If anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear them, otherwise I'll update this thread once I have the new one.

Your at 95% of the way to complete if it's crashing doing the DB.
That sucks. Takes several minutes to get there.

You might try re-downloading the fw file. Maybe it somehow got corrupted.

I just reloaded the same firmware on the same detector I had no problems doing a few days ago, but this time a half dozen tries.
Made a video, needs editing, uploading etc.

I've had similar problems with the firmware. I use a PC and it just works sometimes and not other times. I have learned that for me if I run the downloader on my PC in compatibility mode for Windows 8, it seems to work more often. I don't have a clue why this is, but I just played with it and it worked better. Also, on my PC, there have been times that I actually had the downloader opened multiple times on accident because it opened slowly...this was a recipe for disaster and not getting it to work.

It sounds like your troubleshooting has been very complete, and since you tried Mac and Windows (assuming two different machines versus Windows being bootcamp on MacOS) then this may not be worth your time, but...

sometimes I have found that all things being equal, one USB port can work better for some devices than another. Usually due to voltage, chipset, vendor drivers, etc... lots of goofy and hard to pinpoint reasons, but, and sorry for asking, have you tried a different USB port on the same computer to see if you get a different result? Also, if you are on a Mac that has only USB-C, the USB dongle you are using, does it have a USB-C passthrough for power? If so, powering this dongle can help with some devices.
