Hello everyone greetings :) I’m getting a bit tired of my Uniden r3 would anyone recommend a different radar detector? I live in New York... Uniden Radar detectors are great but are a bit hassle when updating them with their new software updates thank you

If you believe that updating a Uniden is a bit of a hassle, you may find that most detectors are a "bit of a hassle" in their own way. If it works for you, there's no compulsory need to update to each release anyway. I'm running an older release on my R7 because I didn't like the last update but I'll be updating now because the new update has a lot to offer. My R1 is still quite happily on 1.37 though I update and revert for testing purposes.

Where abouts in NY? And R3 is amazing in NY. The fact that it's compact is the reason why I like it more then the R7.

Putnam County I have to deal with NY troopers all the time lol and commute through interstate 684 the r3 is nice but I need something stronger there was once a time I was driving home and my r3 picked up a trooper hiding being some construction material it picked him up almost at the last second enough for me to drop from 80 to 70ish

The R3 is still one of the most sensitive detectors out there. The R7 is a touch more sensitive, but its really only worth the upgrade if you value the arrows. I believe some of the Escort detectors can update themselves over wifi, but they aren't as sensitive as the Unidens.

Unless there's actually something wrong with your R3, you aren't going to find a detector that's much stronger, at least noticeably. The top detectors are all really close with the V1G2 and R7 trading blows on Ka, R7 stronger on K and the R1/R3 barely below them.

Every detector will be limited by how the radar gun is placed in relation to it and by whatever obstructions are in between.

I wouldn't get rid of the R3 just cause of one little thing. I also don't think it was the RD that played a role in it entirely. Perhaps he had i/o

Either way, I drive i-90/i-80 frequently so I do see NYS Troopers all the time as well, the R3 gives me plenty of alert time before; I also drive in the finger lakes area, where roads are small, and they hide in spots.

Yeah but sometimes a trooper would be sitting on a no u turn and the radar wouldn’t go off until I got pretty closed Which is kinda lame ._.

Circumstances could have a lot to do with that detection....

How was the LEO parked? (Factors into how radar is picked up and even if he can get an accurate speed reading)

Was he running front antenna or rear antenna or both? Again could be a big difference..

Could have been something blocking (limiting) the distance of radar path as well...

The r7 has more range than the r3.
I run both.
You won't be disappointed

@Godowsky17
My cousin has the r7 pretty good tbh and idk if he had it updated I don’t think he does but it gives quite a bit of false alerts the V1G2 is quite a beast I seen vortex’s new video on the new redline and the V1G2 came out on top on everything lol but the down side is that it doesn’t have gps for red light cameras or mrcd

Police vehicles parked perpendicular to the road might have their radar on but unless they are using a hand-held, they 99% aren't running radar enforcement. That means they are firing at 90 degrees to your position and you won't get an alert until you're really close unless there is some fortuitous radar-reflective surface for you to get a signal bounce off of. When you see the cop parked parallel to the road, that's radar enforcement stance.

Bottom line, if you really want to find out why you may be getting seemingly less than spectacular alerts, you need dashcam video. In the very least, a detailed description is required. We diagnose these types of issues all the time with the proper data.

With the R3, you have a long range detector. Really the difference between the best long range detector (V1 Gen2?) and the R3, just isn't really that much in every day encounters. If you want a detector with a huge increase in range, it doesn't exist. That is where Radenso's planned Theia detector hopefully comes into play. Though we don't know what the actual range will be, indications point to something truly spectacular. It should become available sometime in the next six months. If you want the best, I would hold on to the R3 and wait for Theia to become available.
