Let's just start by saying today was my lucky day...

had to go to airport to drop of a vehicle for my bosses family. normally I would go from henday to Calgary Trail south, but I decided I would quickly squeeze in a liqour store visit on ellerslie road....

turning onto Calgary Trail south from ellerslie road south, and see an unmarked cop sitting on the ramp... look back at the bridge, and sure enough there is a cop shooting rear laser at people travelling south on Calgary Trail RIGHT at the transition zone. Before & at the bridge is 90km/h, but shortly after the bridge it changes to 110km/h so most people (including myself) accelerate to their HWY 2 speed going under the bridge. This is PROBABLY why they werent shooting front shots on the same bridge as most people don't accelerate till they are at the bridge...

If I had been coming from my house, I probably would have been nailed at 140-150, which could have potentially resulted in an impound...

BUT the kicker is..... one of the cops pulling people over had their radar C/O..... and it wasnt just for the moment, as on my way back from the airport, it was STILL ON! kinda ruins the whole point of them shooting laser, but hey! Better for us!

this would have probably saved me if I was coming from my house, but never the less I have never seen rear laser used in Edmonton!

I have video of this, and will post it as soon as I have time to download it from my dashcam!

Has anyone else in the Edmonton area seen rear shots used before???

Edmonton LOVES shooting rear laser. They'll park up on overpasses on Anthony Henday (and other places) with either Dragoncam or a radio to officers on the highway. I would definitely invest in 2 rx + 1 tx for the front and rear.

There’s Dragon eye photo Lidar in all sorts of places. It’s been going on for a long time.

Take a run on the east Henday. Traveling north by baseline road. The chase cars will pull you over before you get to the Yellowhead. There’s a white van on the overpass with the cop sitting in the passenger seat shooting.

There’s photo Lidar all over Edmonton. Its Dragoneye Lidar.

Yellowhead trail westbound from
Beverly bridge to St. Albert trail.
North side Henday and 97st eastbound and west bound.

I’m surprise you just found this out. It’s been going on for years now. You must not get out much.

Rear ALP's in Edmonton are more important that front..
If I were to get a system and could only afford protecting the front or rear I'd go rear for sure...so many rear laser camera locations..

yes, I'm aware of photo radar, and just know all the spots for that...

I drive the henday daily, usually sherwood park / southside, lots of time to west side as well, and have never seen rear shooting laser (besides photo radar)....

When was the last time you seen Photo RADAR. on the Henday?

The Whytemud yes, because it falls in the cities jurisdiction. It’s not considered an Alberta highway.

The Henday isn’t really part of the city all around.

The East leg is all Alberta Sheriff’s and RCMP. Neither use photo radar.

My last Lidar ticket was from the Alberta sheriffs on the baseline overpass exactly how I described it. 2017 or 2018.

Every weekend in the summer they seem to be there. Next time you see a bunch of cops between Baseline and the Yellowhead look in the mirror at the overpass for the white van.

I live on the east side and drive baseline a lot going to Sherwood Park.
Post automatically merged:

I’ve been hit countless times on the north Hendey as well from the overpassed. Rear Dragon eye Photo Lidar. Just west of the manning.

Rear photo Lidar Yellowhead and 75st by Edmonton Harley Davidson.

Further west 82st by Cougar collision.

Further west yet they sit on the service road between 124st and St.Albert trail. All along the Yellowhead.

Groat Rd in the emergency access turn offs. Little blue Hyundai. Guy sitting in the back seat shooting dragon eye as you pass by. Hell, that same clown hit me by the Hardisty pool and Hardisty Jr. High school. Same car.

last time I saw photo radar on the henday was today... Right after the terwillegar drive exit heading west...

I know forsure the south and west leg of the henday are within city limits, and photo radar is used there, but the east leg is not so it is patrolled only by RCMP.

I've seen them sitting on that overpass, but only ever shooting front laser, never rear... So I guess I've just been lucky.

I'm only speaking of rear laser traps, not photo radar. rear photo radar is a no brainer around edmonton.

It’s always been Lidar there for years. Never Radar.

When your heading south there, it’s mostly front shooting Lidar. They hide by the bridge embankment just south of the river. They also hide on the south side of the baseline bridge with a radio and have a bunch of cops hiding after the Top of the hill by the radio tower before you get to the Sherwood Park Freeway. Those are all frontal shots and not photo as.... they don’t use it.

Still getting back to the OP’s question. It’s been going on for years. It’s not new. Besides this, there’s also lots of roving photo Lidar units around Edmonton as well.

Edmonton shoot rear Laser for a few years !
I was under the impression that AB will impound your car only 50km/h above posted limit and if they can accuse you of street racing or reckless driving. I have not heard of many impounds stories in AB . Have you ? BC is the worst for impounds!

I drive the North end of the Henday quite regularly and started to notice speed enforcement by LEO's from overpass shots and call aheads.

You're probably more up on the times then I, has this been going on for a while now on the north end or just a new development? I haven't ever witnessed it before until the other day.

Agree with @Nanook
Haven’t seen any impounds. Mandatory court appearance yes.
There were a bunch guys in exotics racing around the Black Diamond area. Im
Not sure if they were impounded or just mandatory appearances?

The north side Henday??

There’s that funky section when your heading eastbound. The 2 overpasses (97st? & 66st?) then the bend towards the Manning freeway overpasses pass. I’ve been hit with Dragon Eye photo from up top, but I’ve yet to see a chase team there. Would be a good spot. Lol.
Ever see the silver Ford undercover police truck pacing and running Ka 34.7 with the “For Sale” sign in the back window?

Exactly the location between the 97 st and 66 st overpasses. They were stationed on the 82 st bridge shooting East bound and had 4 chase vehicles, 2 on the 66 st off ramp and 2 underneath the 66 st overpass. They were using both the Explorers and F150's. This was the first time I've ever seen these tactics used on the North side. Usually it is always photo radar or LEO pacing or spot checking traffic while going with the flow. Times are definitely changing with the decrease in traffic on the road.

Never seen the undercover with the "For Sale" sign. That is nuts, but I wouldn't put it past them. In Spruce Grove they set up beaters on the side of the road with the hood up and do photo lidar.
