Cost of adding the RJ11 connector would seem minimal.
On the order of $1-2, and would add significant bulk to the end product.

@SquirrelMaster, what do you think? Seems like you'd be able to slap a case on something like this and be most of the way there. Just need to figure out the BT connection with the V1 and translate serial alert commands to the display.

I've been scouring Amazon for something similar but it's been hard to find something with a color screen. That looks pretty good to my untrained eye.

I can certainly design the case once the hardware is figured out.

RJ11 to USBc adapter?

Easy enough. Find someone to design the graphics for it and I'll make the firmware.

In all seriousness if you guys want to make this work, it's relatively trivial. There's some issues I can see with it overall but they're minor and could potentially be averted with some bullshittery.

I can order 1 too if it will get us a jumpstart. I noticed that delivery was a ways out. What do you think?
I bought one from Amazon. Should be here tomorrow and without corona virus. I've been avoiding ordering from China lately because of how long it would take to get here (for the most part)

Link? I'll grab another one so I can get case design started.

A concern I have is that the display is tft and not oled. I prefer oled for stuff like this and it would be better for automotive use for a couple of reasons.

That being said, this is a good start.

Also moved this to a new thread to not highjack the other one.

I like where this is going. I'd definitely be interested in tinkering around with this as well.

If y'all making a remote display with frequency display that'd be awesome.

Going to see where this goes.

Yes I think this thread will get very interesting! But having said that, aren’t we reinventing the wheel here?

JBV1 gives me Frequency Display plus actual Frequency Audio.

You didn't miss anything. IM and I were trying to figure out some logistics of this over text and this came up.

I argued that I'd rather use oled because at night driving, we can dim parts of the display and still show info without the typical tft light bleeding issues. Idea was to have the outlines of the arrow faintly show up as an indication that the remote display was connected and receiving valid data.

Last thing anyone wants is to have a square tft display barely glowing in their peripheral vision at night.

That was my argument. Well try with tft initially as that'll keep costs way down and if it's good enough or I can find a work around, we'll stick with it.

But having said that, aren’t we reinventing the wheel here?

Please can we not turn another thread into an apps vs standalone pissing match?
We're discussing a remote, compact, dedicated, concealed display.

No pissing match as I didn’t even use the word App, I was just saying if we are using BT for a remote display isn’t that what JBV1 is with all the info or minimum info anybody could want?

So not being an App but just dedicated remote display, what size are we talking about? If the thing isn’t in front of our faces IE so called concealed, how small can it really be and still be of any use?

There is a reason the VR concealed display is laid out the way it is and doesn’t use a touch or OLED screen, the info would be to small to read. It maximizes the important information at a glance while being concealed. Is your thought to do the same on a one inch diagonal display? Just the direction Arrow and Band indicator?

So no App comparisons or discussion, just what is the minimum information goal and the size of an actual useful display?

I believe the thought is to be the same size as a standard concealed display. The one inch OLED is definitely too small (and only one color) so it's out of the question. The proper OLEDs we were discussing are a higher price so we are trying to see if we can make a standard tft display work.

Ideally it will be the size of the normal concealed display with the front panel an LCD. The thickness will be minimal. Trying to keep it no thicker than the display and USB port. Will keep size down as well by using capacitive touch sensors rather than full sized buttons.

Plan is to have all of the arrows and necessary information a good, readable size but we may have to compromise to add the frequency display and whatever else.

Nothing is really set in stone yet. If when that module arrives I end up not liking the display, we can switch to a different one thats bigger or easier to read in sunlight or can dim down lower or whatever the issue may be.
