I wonder if this will impact Waze and maybe others or if they’re grandfathered-in.

Apple's new guidelines can be found on its developer website.
  • 1.4.4 - Apps used to commit or attempt to commit crimes of any kind by helping users evade law enforcement will be rejected. (This previously was a rule limited to apps about DUI checkpoints).

If I’m not mistaken, speeding isn’t necessarily a crime unless it’s Reckless Driving. The argument could be made that the police pins are helping those reckless drivers escape but that would be a really far stretch considering most people are only doing +5-10 psl. With google also starting to add the police report I don’t think the actual reporting of police will go away anytime soon. However this could be the first stepping stone to do away with it. The words “helping users evade law enforcement” is worrying though.

What I can see is Google removing the report police function from Waze and their own map app, just to play nice, but perhaps only for iOS users.

This won't affect Waze in its current form. Using a scanner to succeed in the act of a crime is a crime itself, might as well lump RD's into that if you think they'd come after Waze

The “apps used to commit crimes” has a very broad language. Facebook, tinder, instagram, etc are all used to commit crimes. Doubt waze will be impacted by this.

Same problem for Escort Live? It auto reports from the RD, plus manual reports entered in by user.

I guess the RD reports ok in areas that rd are legal but I wouldn’t be surprised to see User reports nobbled in iOS versions - I did a side by side drive around with Waze on CarPlay and on Android and there were no Wazers seen nor alerts on the iOS version.

That would blow their 'limitless range' marketing right out of the water!

I compared waze and both apple and android today and they were identical for me in southern Alberta. Hope it stays that way

I suppose the RD community (us) could adapt and use Vehicle on Shoulder instead, but I doubt the general public would catch on which could render Waze useless as a CM.

Suggest you take off the old Max 360 off your Avatar. Over time, you seem angry with them. Let there be no confusion... Show folks who you like at this point. :)

Actually, not at all. I have my issues with Escort and how they are run at times (and my past service) but overall I am happy with their product. The more I run competitors units the less 'dislike' I have for them. Sometimes the grass is not greener on the other side. I think the V1G2 could replace my 360....at some point....but not yet....still needs to be refined a bit. Just like the 360's release, took them a while to refine it and fix issues.

The new App store guidelines are interesting, curious if a lawyer with too much free time on their hands will challenge Waze/Google now with it. I think if Waze was a small app developer (like Trapster was in the past) lawyers would have been all over it, but I doubt too many want to go up against google and their resources.

Excellent thoughts. In coming days, if we go lockdown or some other faux induced action, we might see Apple use that as excuse to nuke “observation and notification“ apps involving any part of LE Or “first responders“. The timing would be good. Not raise as many protests. Who would protest something “for the good of the community and nation at this time” excuse?
