The dust has finally settled, I got my R7 along with a long-delayed dashcam installation all tucked away by my rear-view mirror and all the wiring tidied up. I switched from a Escort 9800ix, which was fairly decent (6 years ago) but needed replacing due to advancing auto tech and traffic monitoring systems causing tons of false hits. I dug into the users manual for the R7 and there is a TON of settings in there, the vast majority of which I haven't a clue as to whether I should change them or not. Segmentation? Ka POP? I don't think we have speed cameras here, so that should be safe to turn off. Anyone driving in the NYC metro and rural areas have some recommended settings to minimize false hits while providing good coverage?

Welcome

Will wait for others to chime in : but to start
Seg Ka to 2/4/5/6/8 at the least.
K Pop and Ka pop off
MRCD on
TSF on if the false K alerts bother you.

I use these settings but since I mostly drive in the city I turn K off. When I do venture further out over the weekend I turn K on but I notice on the NJ turnpike troopers usually use KA.

You have a few locals that use K band in the Poughkeepsie/Newburg area.

Troopers and most locals are Stalker Ka band, but they drift. I have 2,4,5,6,7,8 enabled and have seen frequencies in all those segments from Albany to White Plains. 33.8 and 35.5 is rare, but there are a few out there.

Plenty of laser in your area also.

Most Newburgh town police have Decatur units which seem to be K band. Never got a 35.5 alert from them. Usually they don't run radar but I came across one running C/O at 24.192 the other day.

I think they also picked up some stalker patrol units from what i can see.

Newburg listed as a City on the State Grant for the single antenna Stalker Patrols, they got at least 5 of them, probably a few more since they were essentially free for them.

When going on PA interstates/highways, I crank K band to 100% with all K filters on. otherwise I keep it at 60% (which is about equivalent to the V1's sensitivity/range). PA state police only use K band and you'll need really good sensitivity to pickup early detection of low power instant on K band so, always have a rabbit or cars ahead of you. Be careful cruising along solo.

Holy crap... Y'all know state, county and city along with what type and number of speed detection is present. Amazing.

There are absolutely red light cameras, but those are usually down in the boroughs, the only speed cams I know of are for traffic monitoring and not enforcement. If anyone knows different feel free to chime in.

Great stuff. :)

Has anyone seen X band in NY? Most of the time X band reports are misidentified falses, but you never know. I got this comment on YT recently and told them to come here to report it and discuss as usual, but since we're on the topic...

Edit - Drive through fast pass/EZ pass have radar, I understand these have been used for enforcement. Just for the actual toll booth types. The new overhead automatic photo/transponder ones don't.

Never personally, but I also have had it off for years. Usually those antennas are much more noticeable either way.

I know some have a type of laser, it will set my detector off on laser at times.

Had a run in with a trooper sitting behind one of those fast pass lanes and I was hauling the off ramp..detector was going off for 34.7 and it usually does, was not expecting a leo there...

There is almost certainly no X band in use in NY. in 1999 the state provided a grant to replace most of the units with Stalker Duals and some K band units. This grant replaced almost all of the X Band units. It was quite rare to see them after 1999, but a few of the real small towns with part time officers had some left.

In 2016 NYS started another grant which is still open - The governor's safety council (revenue generation) required all the of the older units to be replaced by a grant from NYS. They retired lots of Stalker Duals and old K bands with Patrols. They have spent over $900K in three years replacing the older units with Patrols.

The last I saw X band was about 2005 in a very small town with one Barney Fife. I turn X on now and then (or forget to turn it off when I come back from NJ). The only alerts I get are from stoplight sensors.

Not for much longer - the cashless tolling system is being built right now and instead there will be a bunch of cameras - will be operational in 2021.

One of my co workers got a ticket for going too fast through those lanes, and you do get laser alerts sometimes going through them.

Yeah, the Newburgh throughway from 84 toll plaza has laser. Get hit every time.

For NYC you will want to run Ka on, X and K off. You will want MRCD on for the speed cameras and you will also want to run Waze. If you do segment it make sure segments 4 and 6 are enabled to catch out-of-tune Stalker guns which are common in NYS. Think about laser protection as PL3/PL4/TSS/Stalker are heavily used on NYC highways and local enforcement is almost entirely done with PL4s.
