Hey guys I’ve been trying to do some research on this new U1000 from Thinkware and I’m wondering should I upgrade from my F800Pro? I like the F800Pro but I wonder if this new 4K is really worth it. Anyone have experience with it?

I owned one for about 30mins. There was a good sale at Bestbuy and was going to replace my F800 with it. Once I opened the box I learned why it was so cheap, it was only the front camera and not the rear camera. I took my sd card in to check the quality of the video while I searched for prices for the rear camera and quickly realized that the quality of the F800 was pretty decent, could pretty much see all license plates and had good detail. Plus, considering I'd be viewing footage on my laptop (1440p) and rarely on my 4k tv, I figured it wouldn't be worth it at this time.

I'll keep the F800 until it dies, the Q800 goes on sale for a really decent price.

There are some benefits of the U1000, better sensor, better parking mode and such, but I just couldn't justify it yet.

I know, not exactly what you are asking, but seeing as how we were in similar situations....

So I’ve been running the U1000 lately alongside the BlackVue DR900S and Viofo A129 Pro.

Video quality-wise, it’s a noticeable step up from the DR900S or F800 Pro. The front cam’s quality is similar to the A129 Pro. The U1000’s lens is wider and slightly more distorted. The A129 Pro’s fov is more narrow and rectilinear.

The U1000’s rear cam is the best since it records at 1440p instead of 1080p.

Some of its features like the voice alerts I just turn off because they’re annoying. That’s the same as the F800. Same thing with the cloud alerts, app, etc.

I like the U1000’s big manual record button by itself in the back. The dashcam is shaped different than the F800 Pro and it’s now taller and narrower.

The radar module I’m not super sold on. It gives you low power buffered recording, but it only records cars for hit and runs, not people walking by. It also transmits on K band while parked (not whole driving) so it will false nearby RD’s.

Overall the U1000 is a noticeable step up in video quality over the F800 Pro.

thanks for the reply yea this is kind of my feelings now too. I’ve been looking over some footage of my F800PRO and I keep saying the footage is nice quality. I guess I’ve been trying to find reasons to justify spending the money just to upgrade but I might just wait

thanks for the info I’ve been on the fence about it. Seems like the only real reason for spending the money is the 4K vs 1080. I might just wait a while unless they go on sale

@Vortex I'm curious, does the U1000 support Liveview when in parking mode?

I'll have to test it out. Traditionally it's been best for driving mode and I don't have it set up for parked recording at the moment, but I can test it out later this week.

Thatd be great thank you. If it can connect to home wifi and send push notifications on impact to my phone I'd strongly reconsider buying it

I did some quick reading last night, looks like this may do what I'm looking for.
The increase in quality would be nice, but push notifications when impact is detected in parking mode is a huge bonus for me. I have several thoughtless/careless/jerk neighbors that do not care about others vehicles. My last vehicle had a scratch down the side due to a neighbor doing a u-turn instead of going around the block to leave the neighborhood. Would love to be able to confront them asap or if they aren't home print out a picture of it and leave it with a note on their door saying, we need to talk.

Do you have parking mode enabled on your F800 Pro? The push notifications are nice, but you do sometimes get false alarms with parking mode events. Whether it's capturing unneeded motion alerts or it's physical impacts being registered when a loud car or truck drives by, there's gonna be some falses, at least with the Blackvue's which I'm more familiar with.

With Thinkware I really don't like the audible notifications when you get back in the car since you can't do just parking mode event notifications and shut off everything else which I guess does bring us back to push notifications as an alternative.

In the meantime, even without the notifications, you can still get the recordings and plates recorded with the F800 Pro.

I do have parking mode enabled on my F800, unfortunately when I was side swiped the cam I had at the time didn't have parking mode. That's actually what prompted me to get one with that feature.

I haven't noticed any false impacts from the F800, it usually says x amount of impacts for how many times I was in and out of the car while in parking mode. My elderly dog takes a bit to get in and out, so it usually goes into parking mode before I get him out and close the hatch and again registers another impact when I get him into the vehicle. If it says more than 2 impacts were detected I know to check the vehicle for damage.

Yes, the Thinkware is pretty chatty. It would be nice to only get impact/motion notifications or a notification of sd card failure. I have pretty much learned to tune it out now.

That’s great to hear you don’t get a ton of false alerts when parked with the Thinkware.

I just wired the U1000 back into the Cellink Neo for parked recording. It looks like there are push notifications for impact detection while parked so I’ll play with that.

Thinkware F800 - Chatty dash cam on start up or completely silent, lacks options to enable/disable individual voice alerts. - Also WiFi/Cellphone app, and Cloud feature considered clunky.

So I've been playing with the U1000's parking mode this week and I haven't been able to connect via the cloud the way I can with the DR900S. I'll try contacting TW's tech support again, but it seems like the cloud functionality is only working in driving mode. Maybe I have a setting wrong or something, even though I've enabled the features in the app.

Were you able to get notifications while in park mode?

Havent had luck with the f800.

I personally like the silent mode on my F800Pro. Don’t care for announcements on start up. My app has been great as well nothing clunky about it to me.I haven’t owned other brand cameras to compare it to but no complaints here

If there is an issue with the sdcard will it still tell you when you are in silent mode? If not, that wouldn't be good

It’s a PITA to set up and doesn’t seem to be as good as Blackvue overall, but I’m gonna play with it more now.

I going to keep my eyes open for a deal on the Blackvue Dr900s 2 channel. Seems like it may be the better choice for what I'm looking for
