Hey all,
I was going through and changing a few numbers in my signature as I do every few months. This time around I was unable to save my signature and received an error message that I had 3 lines too many. My signature is small compared to quite a few others so I'm thinking this is a glitch. Attached is the full signature code and the error I received.
To get where I was able to save my sig, I had to remove some stuff from the first cell in the table of two cells. It's been the same sig since last August. :)

Thanks!

Just tried editing mine for giggles, and got a similar error message. Didn't seem to change anything that was already there, but I couldn't make changes without shortening it.

IIRC, there was a xenforo scrollbar type add on that was discontinued after the admin changeover.

TBH, I'm kinda glad a limit was added. I know there's an option to hide signatures, but I'd rather not do that. I like to see what type of setups members have, but there are some member signatures that are unnecessarily long IMO.

I'm not against reducing bloated signatures myself. Maybe I've missed the post where management has stated the new rules?
Finding out that you can't have what you already have at the moment you try to save is not the cleanest of situations.

It's not a rule.

The setting was there for a while, but it seems the latest update finally fixed it and now it actually works lol

Probably better this way. I know Google's been penalizing our ranking on a lot of our pages due to the signatures on some members being excessively long and full of useless info.

@PY004, What's the guideline for signatures then?
Is it by the number of characters? Number of lines?
For me I had the same number of lines in the left cell as the right cell and I had to remove a lot of the left cell content but could have added to the right cell.

The limit does it's thing for those that decide to edit their sig a little and are suddenly restricted, but for those that never touch their sigs it won't have an impact.

Some official info would be helpful in this case. :)

I think it goes from no signatures for new members up to like 6 or 8 lines for advanced.

Alternatively you can consolidate you signature into an image and attach that I supposed.

I guess it's also time to make rules on signatures so some one doesn't create a signature image that takes up the entire screen.

The system also truncated signatures of 4 users during the upgrade for being excessively long (new database row size exceeded lol). I'll have to track those down.

Perhaps the rule can be a soft rule rather than a hard rule. For example, limit signatures to 4 lines of text, or 3 lines plus a spoiler. A spoiler tag and anything within would count as a single line.

With this, we can apply the signature limitation on everyone to keep them clean and short, but while still allowing people to put detailed information inside their spoiler tags.

I don't abuse my signature space. I wrap all the bulk content inside of a spoiler tag so that it is not visually obnoxious. I know we have some members here who have signatures that they do not wrap up in a spoiler to collapse and allow for on-demand expansion. I think that if we want to address those particular obnoxious signatures, then perhaps we ought to message those users specifically and ask them to spoiler-wrap their signature content?

thanks

I really wonder how many users browse the forums and enable viewing signatures? Let them be as long as possible, as long as I have the option to keep them off! :)

Changing from Complete to In Progress status; I still can't edit my signature either due to the change of settings.

Oops! We ran into some problems.
  • Your signature is 1648 character(s) too long.
  • Your signature is 57 line(s) too long.

This is under discussion. Weighing the need for signatures vs google search rankings.

I checked everything and thanks to you I found I screwed up.

We will be restoring from a backup of the settings DB tonight. This will fix the signatures as well as a few others.

Note: this may be a short term fix as we may be enacting changes to the signatures shortly anyways.

We've had a couple incidents happen regarding this. Expect major changes to the signature limitations in the next few days as we have decided in light of what happened to roll out changes.
