Has anyone else been having waze stop navigation when running in the background recently? Used to work great maybe 6 months back, but it's barely usable as a CM at this point given that it turns off without warning while using other apps or when I turn the screen off.

Running on iPhone Xs with latest os for reference.

I forgot if there is a setting for it, but go into the app settings and enable run in the background

It should be a default setting for waze to run while using other apps, try doing what @V1Jake said, go to settings and scroll down until you find the waze app and check if you have the run in background option enabled.

It can also be your phone settings disabling background app usage

Background app refresh should be on, but honestly I’ve had that problem with Waze—and only Waze—for a long time, now. Sometimes it’s worse than others, and I’ve never found a reliable or consistent pattern, much less a fix. I just run Google Maps now instead.

First thing i checked was background app refresh and allowing waze to run all the time :/

Like Deacon said, it seems to be just waze and it's not consistent.

Is the police notifications on google maps comparable to waze? That's why i started running waze in the first place. @Deacon

I guess. I’ve seen a few, but stationary enforcement isn’t common around here, so Waze pins aren’t all that common or useful either.

Driving from Pittsburgh area to Chicago during Thanksgiving I had periods when Waze's maps just went blank. Good 30 to 45 minutes at times. Didn't happen often, but it did happen. Waze was open and the only thing really running as I was using my iPad for music and podcasts.

I will look at the settings though.......can't believe I didn't think of that. I am running an xR.

I don't have an issue with it. I have an iPhone XS Max if that plays a role in it. I typically have Spotify behind Waze (Even tho is a integrated player in app), and I turned off the screen but still get alerts. So I don't have that issue.

Try to reset cache? or as mentioned above toggle in settings if that is a thing.

FWIW, (as a heavy user of Waze but almost always running it through Android Auto these days) I did notice it disappearing a few days ago while in the background and in previous use it usually doesn't do that. There might have been a change to it recently.
It might be related to whether it's navigating or not.

I'm starting to notice this issue on Android 10 too (while phone is on). Waze map would go blank, but turn by turn would still work.

My experience with Waze on iOS is that navigating or not, if it’s in the background it will terminate at some point. I think while in the foreground it’s only crashed once or maybe twice at the most. Left in the foreground it almost always behaves as expected. But then again in iOS when you have Google Maps or Apple Maps running, there’s a little colored bar across the top of the screen letting you know an app is using your GPS for navigation, and that’s never shown up with Waze.

I've never had an issue with it running on a mounted Samsung tablet (Android 9) ...I've heard that iOS tends to kill background apps more so than Android. Not sure if that the issue, though
