I got my first speeding ticket in 1999 which made me get my first radar detector which was a Cobra. I knew nothing about radar detectors so I purchased it because it looked nice! Well 2 years later my car my car was repossessed because I lost my job so I didn't have a car for 10 years. I lived in New York City so I took public transportation for work all of those years. Well 10 years later I got another car and put my Cobra back in but I noticed that it kept beeping all of the time so I stopped using it. So for years I was doing good and then while headed from NYC to Dutchess County I was pulled over for doing 73 in a 55 on the Taconic State Parkway (which I only had 1 more exit to go to enter I-84) in April 2015. State Patrol officer was a nice young guy and he said that he had to give me a ticket because his department really wanted the officers ramp up on catching speeders. He actually apologized for giving me a ticket because he saw that I had a good license and a clean record. Well I went to court in November 2015 and saw the Town prosecutor before getting into the court and was able to plead to "Failure to obey a traffic sign" and 2 points on the license instead of 4 points. Well this whole experience convinced me to get a new detector so I started watching Youtube videos on radar detectors and came across Vortex's channel. I've watched his channel faithfully and when the Max 360 came out I got it. I've been ticket free since and I don't speed often, maybe 5-10 miles over on the highway sometimes. I just finally upgraded to the Max 360c and got a Uniden R7 as a backup. I purchased my son an R3 and got myself ZW5's from Escort when they were on sale. I have yet to put them on because it's too cold here in Wisconsin. Even though this last speeding ticket was in 2015 I thought I'd share my story. What's weird is that this was the only time in all of my years of driving on the Taconic Parkway that I saw that state patrol car in that one spot. I haven't seen it there since so I was unlucky that day. I finally looked at the ticket and I see that it was a Stalker Duo so I think my cheap Cobra would have saved me from that Ka signal if I had it in the car!

I love this community and all of the knowledgeable people on here. Thanks for all that you do!

Vortex is like a gateway drug and this site is almost like a bunch of jukies [in a good way!]. My wife checks the credit card statement every time she sees me watching one of his videos.
Always plenty to learn here, glad you aboard.

Unless he was running selective I/O as they are known to do on the Taconic. Out of all the highways/parkways I drive, the Taconic is the one where I'm most careful. It's good to hear you haven't had a ticket since.

I forgot to mention that I have Progressive insurance, and when I was in the court room, the judge said that my insurance "will not" go up. She said something referencing this being my first ticket and that there was a law that my insurance couldn't go up. I can't remember word for word, but I assumed she meant that I haven't had a ticket for a certain amount of time so my insurance would not go up. This was true because my insurance never went up. Is anyone familiar with this in New York State? Could it be because I pleaded down to "Failure to obey a traffic sign"? Do only Speeding and drunk driving affect your insurance rates and not signs? I tried looking it up on google but couldn't find anything related to this.

I believe that in NY if you have had a clean license for 3 years you are protected from an insurance increase on your first "non-major" moving violation as long as you don't get any others during the following 3 years. (More than PSL+15 is classified as a major violation.)

I'd be running that r7.
I agree and I'd ESPECIALLY be running it on the Taconic to try to pick up any I/O whiffs that I can. No substitute for range on a road like that.

At least you were a faster learner than I was. It was after my 58 time that I was stopped for speeding that I decided to get serious. Most of those were in my youth and I have gotten stopped a couple of times since but no tickets were the result making the total times that I've been stopped for speeding 60 now [I'm old]. I was upset that I didn't at least get a free set of steak knifes for the effort. It has been 4 or 5 years since my last ticket. OK, that is beginning to sound like an AA meeting.
The intro for the SA [speeders Anonymous]
Hi, my name is Turbofish, it has been 4 or 5 years since my last speeding ticket. I am a speeder. I will always be a speeder, there is no reform, only avoidance

God, give me grace to accept with serenity
the LEOs with an attitude that cannot be changed,
Courage to arm myself with the tools
and the Wisdom to learn how to avoid the next ticket.

*No disrespect to those in AA

Respectfully, the R7 should be your daily and the Max360 C as a backup. The R7 being a much better unit.

NO, its not just DUI and speeding that count, its any "moving" violation in most states versus an equipment violation like a burned out taillight or a seat belt offense. "MOVERS" always affect your insurance rates. Fail to obey a stop sign would be a mover. AS to major or minor, a DUI would be a major mover and a stop sign or improper lane change a minor. However, both are still movers , albeit different points are scored for each one. in IL for example, a Red Light Cam ticket is NOT a mover since an officer can not swear to the identity of the offense (nor did he/she personally witness the violation). However, a red light violation where the officer writes the ticket is a point assessing mover.

Wow. All great information here guys! I love this community! No more driving without my 360c or Uniden R7. I've seen that many people have experienced problems with the 360c, but I've never had a problem with any detector. My Max 360 was fantastic also before I sold it to upgrade to the 360c. I guess I'm one of the fortunate ones.

I'll install my ZW5's in the spring since it's too cold out now. Hopefully they'll have auto JTK available for the firmware by then!

Try your best to get them installed even if they are not 100% leveled up front. Even having the heads there will be MUCH better than nothing. They still shoot lidar even in the middle of winter. Don't kick yourself later for getting a ticket with a lidar gun for not having the ZW5's installed :)

Good to have you here. NYC here

Most of the insurance companies that I've had over the years will differentiate between speeding > 10 over PSL and <=10. The Ten and under, insurance won't go up. Of course every state is different and every insurance company is different. I've been dropped from insurance in my younger and most ticketed years. Oh, all of my tickets have been for speeding - grew up too Baptist to learn about the consumption of adult beverages but I am a quick learner. Some of your less than honest LEO [shocked, I know] will not call it a speeding ticket at all but keep it in the local civil area. My wife got one of these a while back where all of the funds of the ticket will go in the less than squeaky clean of reputations city fund. It would have been cheaper with a ticket! But at least it didn't go on insurance
In fact, here is a selfie that my wife took while getting that ticket. No radar was being used and the not quite a town doesn't have VASCAR. They usually use KA but will hand out tickets like candy when the police fund is running low.
