Welcome to the RDF!

Running any other counter measures with the Escort? Like maybe Waze?

Thank you very much for the warm welcome, everyone! I have a F80 M3 with ZW5 installed as of 5 days ago. I live in the Bay Area and would love to hear your pointers and advice on how to test that they indeed work.

I made a dummy test, and encountered something weird: My Redline EX says Laser Shifters Shift on power on, but when I point the TV remote or my iPhone X into the shifting heads, no alert is triggered. That is, if I point the TV remote or the iPhone X into the shifter heads, nothing is picked up. But if I point the TV remote or the iPhone X into the Redline EX itself, then it says "LASER."

This begs the question:

Is the Laser Detector in Redline EX different than shifting heads' detectors? That is, is it possible that some IR or Laser is picked up by the Redline EX but not the ZW5 shifters? Or are my shifting heads just broken?

Thanks so much!!!

Most RDs use a wide range IR Receiver LED. Most appliance IR Remotes transmit around 940nm where as Lidar is at 905nm. So if the Shifters have a tighter more sensitive receiver to prevent false alerts, then an IR Appliance Remote would not set them off. Where as most RDs are set off by anything IR except for the RDs that have poor IR sensors that don't even go off when directly hit by true Police Lidar!

The only way to accurately test your setup is to test against a Forum Member with a Lidar Gun. This gives full feedback because they will know if they were able to Punch Through (PT), at what place on the vehicle, and how far out or how close. Yes you can drive past a LEO using Lidar and if you get an Alert, you know it is at least Alerting to Lidar, but that is your only feedback. You will not know if the LEO was able to PT and clock you, where it happened, how far ut it was, of any useful information for that matter.

It is best to find a test group or nearby fellow member that has access to a Police Lidar Gun. All testing at home without an actual Lidar Gun tells you is that your receivers are receiving sounding an Alert, NOTE that does not tell you that you are protected. Why, because you could still not be transmitting. Your setup is bad and offers no protection IE it is PT City! So called testers are useless as they only test receive and that tells you nothing, it does NOT confirm that you are protected. It only tells you the system is on, and that the at least one receiver is working, nothing more.

Certainly! I totally understand your point, but I live in Bay Area and in the directory there only seems to be one person doing LIDAR testing and that user is already "flagged" under the inactive category. I did reach out to the user, but I hope they reply!

If you know anyone around NorCal who does testing, I'd be glad!

@picklejuice - did you have a pic of your set-up? I ask as I have an F36, and initially installed the ZW5’s vertically in the outer kidney slats. @thebravo did some quick testing and we were surprised it was JTG on the 3 guns he had that day (XLR, TSS & a legacy gun if I recall). I have since moved the ZW5s to a different vehicle & need to have it tested.
