I bought a uniden r3 two weeks ago on amazon prime, its working fine up till yesterday i had it plugged in to my car lighter like i normally do along with my cell phone. All of sudden i see smoke coming from the unit and turns off and no longet turns on. I immediately unplugged everything when i saw this. But now im stuck with $300+ paper weight.. I emailed uniden customer service, what else's can i do ? Thanks.

Yeah definitely just return via Amazon.

Within the first 30 days I’d return it to Amazon.
Although Amazon has a good return policy, he may have bought it from a 3rd party seller. Return policy from 3rd party seller may be different. But having it for 2 weeks and it smoked after that may be a warranty issue. If it was defective when he got it, that is a legit return with no questions ask. But who know's. Won't hurt to try.

From your description, sounds like this wouldn't work, but have you tried checking the fuse in the power cord and replacing it if blown?

I am pretty sure on Amazon if an item is flat defective, Amazon will handle a return even with a third party seller.

I purchased an autel scan tool from a 3rd party who claimed to be an authorized seller (they may have been... In China) but I received a Chinese import unit not warranted in the USA so any repairs and it'd have to be shipped to China for repair.

Seller refused my return but Amazon forced them to accept it after I'd had the unit 25 days. The seller attempted to charge a restocking fee and Amazon refunded that too.

It's been shown Amazon has a certain amount of liability for items from 3rd parties especially if they are defective.

Thank for everyone help, i was mistaken on when i bought it was more like 3-4 weeks. I tried returning it through amazon prime, but it said it was not eligible, i was a couple days over the 30 day mark.

I might buy another power cord and see if it turns on, but even if it does i dont think i would trust it.

I wouldn't. Just send to uniden, if it smoked something gave up the ghost. You may even short out a new cord.

You could also try contacting Amazon and the seller to see if they will make an exception to the return policy (it's worth the ask). Uniden will replace it with a refurbished unit even though yours was new. Unless it wasn't then you may be up a creek without a paddle.

If an Amazon return isn't possible, I'd contact Uniden customer service. The exact same thing happened to my original R3. It was well beyond the warranty, but I sent it to Uniden and they ultimately replaced it with a refurbished unit that's been working great.

If the fuse isn't blown on your existing power cord and the smoke came from the actual RD....send it and the power cord to Uniden.

If you bought it with a credit card and the seller is refusing to take it back, then you could contact your card provider and explain to them the situation. My American Distress card is actually pretty good at getting returns through if the seller does not take it back and offers full refund.

I always forget about this perk with Amex. This is a great idea if it’s an option.

Hmm. I have had three Unidens so far and no issue. Sounds like you are playing the troll side of the "this is my favorite radar detector, and yours doesn't work as good as mine" debate. Why comment at all?

if you let the smoke out of the detector, a new cord is not going to help. unless you can check the cord with a meter i would not use that cord on the replacement detector.

I called customer service about a week ago, they filled a report and sent pre paid label to send it in.
One they inspect it and look at it, they will send me a new R3. Im guessing not new but refurbished. Better than nothing i guess.
Might call them up and see if I could pay the difference and just get the R7 with the arrows.
