Hello all,

Ive owned a V1 since about 2005, bought it off of eBay used. I sent it in to be updated in 2006 and it has been used everyday since. Recently I have been having issues, namely, the laser warning will go off with the rear arrow flashing. This can happen 15 times or more on my commute. It will happen sometimes as soon as I start up my car, on open lonely roads, and in traffic. The V1 does it in both my 2013 Ridgeline and 2006 Civic Si. Neither of which have any sort of radar cruise control, lane keep assist, or any other fancy technology.
My guess is that it needs to be repaired, but also probably updated, and it looks like updates are a no go now. I have also noticed almost no signals detected when passing cops or even road signs which used to set it off. I’m wondering if I should just give up on it and go the Radenso way, as it looks to be a good option, or hold off and get it fixed (which I have no clue how long that would take), or just wait till I can upgrade it.

Just a heads up, the new Radenso detector everyone is talking about won't be available until sometime in 2020. The Pro M is great, but is still a "legacy" detector and doesn't include any of their cool new AI stuff. AFAIK, there won't be a path to upgrade from the Pro M to their new detector. If you can hold out for another year or so, I'd wait and see how things shape up. V1 may come out with something new with an upgrade path and the new Radenso detector sounds like it will be a game changer.

I would definitely caution you against taking the above advice. Driving around for a year without a detector is a long period of time and needlessly places you in harms way.

Unfortunately you can't upgrade your V1 because Valentine Research is temporarily out of stock (over 7 months now) and no one knows when they will be back in stock.

Your options are to get your V1 repaired and then choose to keep or sell it, or to sell your V1 as is and fully disclose the condition.

In the meantime you have more than enough options to cover you if you want to buy another new detector such as a Radenso or Uniden.

Or you could always buy a used newer V1 which has crystal tuning that prevents the type of issue you are seeing with it falling out of spec.

One RDF member currently has his for sale and you won't find a better place to do business than here.

If that's all that's wrong with it, just turn laser off and let it eat! That's what I would do till you can get another detector or have it fixed. If it's not alerting to radar however, I'd get another detector, I'd never drive naked!

Thanks for all the help. My normal driving route is very rural with only about 3-4 mins of a two lane highway drive. If I could turn off the laser I could just keep it until either Radenso or V1 turn up with something. Question is, I never knew you could just turn off individual bands, how would you go about turning off the laser?

Turn your V1 off with the knob. Press the knob in while turning it on. Continue to keep it pushed in. If you do this right, everything will light up. Then press the knob 1 time and let it show you it's firmware. While its showing that press it again. It will show 1 this is X band If I was you while I was there, I'd press and hold the knob down till the arrow points down, that will turn off X band! Keep pressing the knob quickly once at a time till you see 4. Press and hold the knob until the arrow points down that will turn off laser for you! BTW, 1 is X band, 2 is K band, 3 is Ka band and 4 is Laser. If you decide to turn it back on, just repeat and press the knob till the arrow points back up.

Well summarized by @Kennyc56, but you can also find a complete programming manual and more info here: http://www.valentine1.com/Lab/techreport3.asp

Does your V1 at least have the crystal controlled tuning (FCC ID QJAV18A)? I believe that was released in 2006 around when you last sent in your detector for an upgrade.

Your best bet is to call VR and see what your options are. Maybe they can offer a tune-up while we're waiting for new detectors to be available, or maybe they'll tell you some good news :)

Depending on your need for speed, I wouldn't advise not having a detector for a year.
I'd buy a second hand ESP V1 or, failing that, another brand to see you over until VR has stock.

Send it in to V1 and let them give it a tune up and software update. Sure it is old but worth the price if you are going to continue to run it.

Excellent, thank you for the info! I turned the laser off and will just use it till either the new v1 or Radenso is available.

Do you have a smart phone also running by any chance? Some emit IR that can cause laser falses on RD's.

Great advice from Kenny and IM! As others have mentioned, my first thought would be to do a factory reset so you have a known starting point. Then I would also turn off X Band if there is none of that in your area to reduce falling from all the non-Police fixed X Band sources, then turn of Laser, then take the V1 for a drive and see how it does.

Deleted. Thought an updated V1 was available from another RDF member but it's outdated.

Your welcome! I forgot to mention the most important step when running a V1! Go back and do the steps until you get to number 6. Hold the knob down until the arrow goes down. That turns off Ka guard and makes the V1 come alive against Ka band! I wouldn't run it any other way! Some have said you risk getting a Ka false or two but the difference in speed against I/O and Q/T shots make it damn well worth it! I never get any Ka falses with my V1 with Ka guard off.

You could also go here and put your serial number in to see if a software upgrade is available at all.
That was the first thing I did and I got a message saying the upgrade service was currently unavailable..

I’ve had numerous iphones through the years, the constant laser falses didn’t coincide with a new phone so I would rule that out
