This morning as I was heading to the gym, I got rear ended...

I heard a crash behind me and then I got hit right after. It looks like the person two cars back (red car) hit the person behind me (white car which took most of the damage) who then hit me.

Luckily everyone's okay. I was the only person in my car.

We all spent an hour in the cold waiting for the police between multiple calls to 911, them showing up across the street by mistake, and getting bounced around police departments because we were right on the border between cities. Anyway, here's the cars.

Luckily it looks like the damage to my car is pretty minimal. Just some damage to the rear bumper area.

Now I'm actually pretty pissed that I didn't have a rear dashcam running for this. I normally have my DR750S in the rear, but it was having some issues switching into parking mode automatically so I sent it back for repairs. I'd mounted the Vantrue X4 in the rear in its place, but the suction cup kept failing and so it kept falling off. I didn't try a different dashcam instead and now I'm really kicking myself for not doing so.

At least I've got the front dashcam footage (I had 3 dashcams running on the windshield...), but still.

Never again will I drive without a rear dashcam and I'm gonna put one in my wife's vehicle now too.

Sorry to hear and glad you're safe. I may add a rear dashcam also.

That would have killed me, I always freak out when I’m stopped in an intersection and creep way up on the guy in front.

I’ve had events like that turn out pretty bad, good thing everyone’s fine.

Looks like no countermeasures were harmed in the making of this video, probably a classic case of distracted driving. I have a couple idiot friends who shouldn’t even have a license that text and drive and carry a lot more momentum into situations like that.

Sorry to hear that. It's a miserable feeling when someone runs into your vehicle. The good news is that nobody was hurt and you came out of it with minimal damage to your SUV.

Geez bro, i got rear ended last night by a hit and run drunk driver. He was luckily chased by an unmarked car and arrested. He almost killed his passenger. Ill post my vids later.

As long as everyone is ok - its just a car.

Make sure the shop removes the bumper fascia to look at the aluminum bumper behind the fascia. If it is compromised, then the next accident you may not have as much protection.

If it does need aluminum bumper repair, now is the perfect time to add a rear tow hitch, as it replaces the aluminum bumper on the Q5.

Crappy.

Good to hear everyone is alright.. the Q5's rated pretty highly for safety.

Since the police are involved, I'm assuming you'll have to get everything inspected/assessed. With those plastic bumpers you might not see the damage underneath, and they'll have to check the sensors.

Also, they charge an arm and a leg for paint. (you'll want everything back to new)

Not your fault but your shiny new Audi just depreciated a bit.

Make sure the shop removes the bumper...
Ditto
It looks like nothing, but it could be weakened for the next very gentle bump while parking.

That was one of my first thoughts, haha. Luckily my car is okay.

I talked to the driver in the red car who caused the incident and asked her if she was on her phone. She said no and that she even has her phone automatically go into driving mode. She can't even receive phone calls when driving.

Rewatching the dashcam footage again, you can actually hear her slam on her brakes and her tires skid about 2 sec before she hits the person behind me. She did tell me that she hit her brakes so maybe her brakes or tires were bad? I have no idea how fast she had to have been driving in traffic to hit that hard after slamming on the brakes 2 sec before impact and still having that much damage to the cars...

Edit: I was wrong. That sound was the whoosh of the car going by in the other direction.

I have seen several when we removed the bumper there was a lot of damage underneath - but only scratches on the Fascia, especially to the low speed impact honeycomb and the bumpers that have those shock type things built in.

What was the temperature - I doubt that Subie has summer tires, but the last week here its been as low as 30 and my summer tires dont grip well at all until they warm up. Winter tires go on Monday.

Yeah, while this appears to be quite minor, the repair costs can reach into the thou$and$. Sorry for the hassle, Vortex.

As for the metal behind the plastic bumper, yeah for sure. I've also got a custom plate mounted above it for the rear RD's. You'll see the rear NR DSP, RC M, and Max Ci 360 heads there. Hopefully those are fine too.

Dang. Sorry to hear that. The important thing is no one was hurt.
2 things:
1: As mentioned, make sure the mounts & pads & whatever behind the plastic are checked out.
2: Turn your doggone rear camera on!! :D

Lots of runners lately... drunk or impaired and no DL or insurance and away they go!
Glad you're ok!
