I just noticed that Maps now includes the ability to report road hazards, crashes and slowdowns. I think these were recently added, and make it clear that Google is trying to make Maps more like Waze.

I know they own both applications, but maybe this is another indication they're looking to consolidate?

Or at the least, get more data in. These apps are always at risk of people just idly using the reports without contributing.

Yes, Google will eventually add all reporting functionality in Waze to their own Maps app. Then it will end up here:

I decided to try Maps on Android Auto this afternoon instead of Waze.
I drove for at least 30 minutes with lots of alerts not showing on Maps at all (Waze on phone) and then I realized that on their Android Auto screen, Maps hasn't yet added any of these new reporting features. I've seen them on the phone screen already.

Maps may take over Waze, but it won't be today. :)

It’s on IOS now. I drove with Waze on my CarPlay screen and Google on my phone. Waze was well reported. There were no reports on Google until I put them there. Once people notice the feature I think the reports will increase. The problem is if the heard splits, there will be less info on Waze and Google unless the start sharing the info. They could since Google owns both.

Waze works very well. If it comes to it, hopefully Waze and Google will learn to share ;)

I just installed the update and see the report icons.....i am not sure how I feel about this.....I do wonder (as above) if this will result in a split and reduction of reports.

I hope they at least merge the reports across platforms like Waze and EL once did.

I was sort of under the impression that they were sharing reports... They should.

Not yet, at least in my areas.
This is crazy. Came here to figure out whether they are sharing data. I way prefer the google maps interface over waze for most cases but obviously need my police reports. What the hell google.

Does anyone know if you get the same alert to 'police spotted ahead' on google as you do waze?

I think others are playing with this feature as I saw 2 reports of police on google today on a 5 minute drive off in neighborhoods to the side. When I turn off the actual navigation and it goes back to just the map view the police alerts go away. It seems the only way to see where the police are marked is during actual navigation. You cannot just scroll around like you can with waze to find them easily. Maybe they are taking the police push back into consideration to make it harder for people to locate them to do harm.

I wondered the same thing.
And do red light camera warnings work if you are just driving but not navigating?

Unless Google decides to share Waze info, (or gets rid of Waze altogether) this change only helps the LEO's cause.

Why bother worrying about it
We shall all soon be required by law to use Google self driving vehicles on public roads
Sit back and relax as the computer regulated speed gets you to your destination free from any worries of exceeding the PSL.
If you have a warrant out on you the facial recognition on all our devices and vehicles will be obligated to lock the doors and transport you to the nearest appropriate LEO for arrest.
The world will soon be an accident free, crime free place, all thanks to Google and companies like them.
