Hi guys, long time viewer first time commenter here. I had an US R1 earlier in the year, however I had that snatched when my car got broken into outside my house. I've constantly wondered if for my next radar I'd be better off buying a DFR7 NZ as opposed to a US R1 as currently I can land an R1 from the US for $350NZ. Looking on TradeMe, the cheapest DRF7 NZ I found was around $475, so my question is, is it worth me shelling out a bit more to get a detector that gets NZ GPS databases or is the R1 still a solid detector?

That sux! sorry to hear. My inkling is that if you were doing okay without maps, you could probably continue to do okay without them.
The R1 is a solid detector when it comes to Ka, and has outshone most others in terms of Ka range. If you do go with the DFR7, you will take a significant hit in range, but have the option of maps as well as redflex detection.

If I was in your situation, I would go for a R1.

It is swings and roundabouts. I agree with a lot of what dudeinnz says. However, it does depend upon what your expectations are and how you were using your R1. Presumably you were using your R1 with K band off? That way you had a very quiet detector which only alerted to Ka band?

If you were previously happy with the R1 running K band off, then in that case, you could also consider the DFR9 from US (landed in NZ direct from amazon for about NZ$370). This would save you money, give you gps maps (either 1.37 or my NZ database), and can run Ka band only but also with pretty good range on Ka band (likely better Ka range than DFR7, but we haven't yet done the comparative testing).

If you really want redflex detection then only the DFR7 is probably worth considering in this price bracket. The US DFR7 has proven itself to have some redflex capability, but the DFR7 NZ has greater K band scanning ability, and is also much quieter on account of the segmentation. It is possible future updates on the DFR9 might enable low K band scanning - but don't count on that!
