So seeing all the various changes and increased need for testing in the world, I am heavily considering picking up a radar unit In the coming months. However, I definitely want to make the right choice for my needs, while being sensitive to both price and ease of use. I could just go and get a Bushnell, but I feel like the fact that some of the dash mount units are so modular for different circumstances that I can get more value for one of those. Plus, I drive a freaking Crown Vic. That thing is just begging for a dash mount, let's be real...

My daily encounters focus mostly on 35.5 and K band. Probably 95% of what I see. The other 5% consists of 34.7 and 33.8. X band is a couple hours away in New Jersey.

I am leaning towards a K band gun, because there is just so much to test and learn in regards to K band with our detectors. I have seen great prices pop up for both Genesis I's (which I do personally encounter) and MPH Python II's (I don't see many, but it's pretty modular with 33.8 and X band antennas, for more options later on). I could even go the route of a Kustom Eagle and get both a K band and 35.5 antenna, albeit a little more pricey. I'm not even really looking at Genesis II's or anything Stalker. Pretty out of my price range for a first time user.

So I am looking for some recommendations from the pros here. Of the above units, is there one you'd recommend over another? Is there one you find more intuitive to use over the other? Is there one not listed that I should take a look at? The first time radar unit owner and (hopefully) future tester would appreciate any and all feedback from you guys. Thanks so much in advance!

Well, my federal student loan grace period ends in exactly 50 days. So I'm about to be massively in debt to the government and want to honor those loans responsibly. So I figured under $200 would be cool (which is where I see a lot of Genesis I and Python II units).

I would suggest a Genesis 2 unit. I've had one for awhile now and I love being able to test whenever and however I want! Mine has a 35.5 Ka gun and a 24.150 K band gun, so I get the best of both worlds! I picked mine up for around $225.00. It's worth every penny! Every time I get a new detector I can bench test it before I install it in one of our cars and know it's all good!

A dash mount isn’t the easiest thing to test with. Power supplies. Setting it up off the ground, and positioning the antenna in a realistic position.

Get a gun, zip ties, and elastic bands. You can mount it or strap it to trees and other objects. It gives you more options.

Once you start testing, you’ll see how hard it is to find the right course.

Start with a Bushnell. Affordable . Readily available. Easy to use. Adjustable.

Ka bands are harder to find.

Test what’s used in your area. I highly recommend asking for someone to loan you a unit and pay for the shipping. That way it does not blow the budget.

It's also a really interesting experience to see the the kill zone range you actually get, in many cases I have been surprised with how small the kill zone is sometimes. Especially in moving mode, I would pick a cops shooting radar up a very long time before they would get my speed.

That was the biggest surprise for me also. Especially around curves! That's why you should always drop that damn anchor as soon as you get that first blip at the beginning of a corner!

I see primarily Decaturs, both Genesis I and Genesis II (K & 35.5), so that's probably where I should start. Although I feel like this is gonna turn into another addiction really quickly and I'll want to add to the collection. I really want to try a Stalker at some point, as I hear they are awesome!

That's a big part of it too. There's so much to learn not only from testing, but being on the operator's side.

Would you like to borrow a genesis 2 (normal or select variant?) for a while to see how you like owning a radar unit? Will let you play around with it a little and get accustomed to using a dahs unit :)
This is a mighty generous offer sir! I'm gonna be basically MIA due to work the next few days, but we will be in contact.

Maybe look at a Kustom Golden Eagle. They’re mostly retired guns but new enough so the guts are all used today, it’s just the newest version has a couple extra features. A dash unit might be more expensive but it is a whole lot of fun. I think there’s still a bunch selling on eBay, it’s around $200 and it comes with the unit/display, a remote, a pair of cables and a pair of antennas and some even have some basic mounting hardware and tuning forks as well a a cute sun visor. You can even try to bargain your way down.
Not to mention the KGE is a tough 35.5 gun and you can also buy a 24.25 K antenna for it. when you’re mixing and matching though you have to be careful because there’s a couple different types of cables.

also pretty important, is it’s a pretty common gun in the community here so a lot of people know how to work on them. I swapped all my mashed buttons out with basic soldering ability and a $15 digikey purchase.

aside from all that nonsense, yes a stalker ATR is a load of fun, I want a DSR but they’re out of our price range and I never seem to have the cash when the once in a blue moon deals came by. A stalker II is even worse but a very neat gun. I also like the MPH dash guns because they’re all clean and new but again 33.8 is a Unicorn out here and I have other things that need my money.
