I love Waze. While I think its interactivity is a little dangerous without some sort of fully hands free function "Hey Siri, report a waze alert, debris on road" I really like it. (edit just learned that OK Waze can do reports, I will have to try that)

However, my cynical mind goes to other places:
I write and interface with APIs for a living so I was thinking about how Waze works and who owns the data. Hmm. Google. Thought #1, I don't always trust them, they have bought up and killed off a bunch of products I truly loved, sucking the life from them. Picasa was the latest death for me.

Other thoughts:
Why doesn't law enforcement simply hire someone like me that can write a API client to inject police warnings all over the place and obfuscate the real data out there?
Or worse yet, what is to prevent false reporting of junk alerts by a do-gooder?
Why doesn't law enforcement force Google to eliminate LEO from a targetable alert? Free speech blah blah blah, but a little pressure is all it takes.

Law enforcement cannot force anything on a private company who has made their position on the issue clear. I'm wary of a change to this philosophy as time goes on.

I suspect waze would catch onto this "spamming" idea and eliminate the issue on their end. I believe people do confirm outdated police reports and report nonexistent police. There's really no way around this - it is the nature of CSA.

Police forces have tried in the past but have so far been unsuccessful in getting Google to remove police reports. They did reduce the alert distance from a mile to about 1000' though. Google has recently started adding Waze reports to Google Maps too.

Google helps defend against bogus reports by creating user reputations. Users who report things that are later validated by another users with a thumbs up will have more credibility when submitting reports than a user who is new or frequently get's a thumbs down. As a developer I'm sure you can imagine other ways to help validate reports...

Before I upgraded to iOS 13 betas I thought I saw there being Siri Shortcuts for reports but I may be misremembering.

OK Waze disables phone assistants so while waze is running with it enabled you won’t be able to use Siri for anything.

And there is a way to report folks that are obviously spamming with false reports and get thier account post privileges removed.

Yes! This is what I meant. I remember reading that publicly available GPS has a much higher resolution but is purposely detuned so people can't drop a bullet on someone from space using public GPS. I remembered that there was some "pressure" put on google to do something like this. Who knows what "the men who move only in dimly lit halls" (fleet foxes, helplessness blues) have planned for us.

It's actually not that bad. This page has a lot of info about it. Basically military is more accurate because they use dual frequencies and civilians can also use dual frequency to get centimeter precision. Smart phones are about 5m accuracy.

As a 7 year Wazer, I am starting to dislike Waze. Now, they allow anonymity in reports so you can't call someone out on false/inaccurate reports and when I see someone get 550,000 points in one week, I wonder what is really going on with Waze. Google has taken the fun out of Waze.

I am aware of someone being ticketed for a flash of headlights indicating a LEO around a corner. I guess I don't see longevity behind a service that does this on a much larger digital scale! It does seem the flash is very controversial (see wikipedia for more) but it floats between being first amendment free speech and a ticket for defective lighting!

One thing we know about Google; They will release yet another GPS product before they begin to migrate Waze or Google maps to one another. Then they will drop one of those three. The features in Waze will most likely survive even if the appearance or name doesn't.

Interesting about the alert distance change to 1000ft. Anyone know how long Cop alerts stay on Waze? Same for all alerts?

I'm at 7 years too. Having my wife run her app at the same time we can see one of us can be dangerous behind the other in alerts ut most of the time accurate. That's why I like running Highway Radar and or JBV1 with the V1 for extra range.

Well, the lighting is fully operational. You could just be testing it. The only lights I know are illegal to use to communicate are the hazards but LEOs don't know so I thank people with a few Hazard blinks like the Japanese and Germans do. And there was a ruling where it was considered free speech. They should take it to court.

Besides, if cops want to defeat Waze, there are many ways they can do that. Virginia State Patrol had Ka traps for 10 miles at each border each about 1 mile apart. They delete each other's pins. If it wasn't for highway radar, I would have been surprised by I/O Ka.

Deleting a way to write on a police report was a mistake
From difficult traps to 47 likes you could tell what was going on up to the minute

I’ve lately been running Waze without navigation on my iPhone while running Apple Maps or Google Maps on CarPlay (ios13)

I still like Waze alerts but have been losing faith with navigation.
Yea, Waze navigation is a bit annoying to deal with

Waze works wonders. Go into your phone settings, then general settings, then storage under phone management, then internal storage, then apps, then WAZE, clear data, then clear cache, then change the app usage from "internal storage" to "sd card or external storage" . Have a good quality sd card in your phone and make sure it has plenty of room for WAZE delete stuff if needed. The app will now run lightning fast with no gps issues, no other issues, accurate reporting, and show you police ahead icons faster. Enjoy.

Oh I forgot, also do the same to your camera app if you want to record a traffic stop and just pull the sd card out for dvd formatting to be used in a courtroom or ask the courtwhat inputs thier equipment accepts. Some usb, or digital broadcast, older courts need a dvd.

The only problem I had with Waze navigation was when home WiFi was in range, it would have trouble calculating a trip in my driveway. Once away from WiFi, no problem.

I navigate to every job site I travel to (most are new to me and in densely populated areas) with good advanced notice of turns, proper road sign identification of road names and place names, and ease of use to send alerts. It gets me there, and even from a great distance it gets the ETA correct at the start...even with traffic snags in rush hour traffic. How it can do that so accurately is beyond me. What's not to like?

Warnings are VERY helpful in this Police State with constant sickening harassment of over-enforcement of speed...and nothing else like dangerous cell phone idiots and left lane daydreamers in Subaru SUV's! GET A REAL JOB! Something that doesn't waste my tax dollars paying for all your expensive "equipment" and pension benefits while you hold guns by your side while forcing highway robbery on us for harmless speeding. NEWSFLASH: The speeders are the alert drivers , who are the safest drivers on the road. All these "enforcers" do is slow everyone down to a crawl, and create a serious road hazard between blocking off lanes, making drivers move over (creating many more collision hazards), and rob us commuters who have to live far away from our place of employment (because we can't afford to live anywhere near our job) out of our hard earned money! Cork suckers!:argh:

Sorry....It's been a long week of "around every corner" harassment. Had to vent. :sotw:

@PHILBERT,
I agree with just about everything you just said (Your personal experiences are something I didn't experience. ;-))

I work a lot like you do it sounds like. I'm often going to different places daily.

I have a tip for the WiFi in the garage or driveway issue. I have my phone shut off WiFi as soon as it connects to the car. As a matter of fact, that is now a feature of Android Auto.

Yeah, sorry. I kind of lost it there. :yell::rant::razz: Good tip for the Android. I use Android for my work travel, as my work phone is Android. My personal iPhone? I just go to the end of the driveway and put my address in there.
