Hello, sadly I have created this account due to my uniden r3 not working properly. I am extremely new to radars and have bought r3 about 5 months ago and it has worked out great so far until the 19th. I am located in the bay area, and during my drive on 280 I would say around redwood city, mountain view area, there was a California highway patrol OUT of his vehicle with his radar right on his eye and my r3 did nothing. Not a single chirp or ka band, nada. I am new so the only information I can give is I updated the firmware as soon as I got it and I turned off K band as I heard it is useless in CA, other than that I believe I have everything else on. Narrow, X, Y even tho I don't really need it that was what was on at the time during this video.
Sorry if there is swearing in the video, some can be mad if they spend about 450 dollars and it not go off. After passing the cops I start messing with radar and turned on K band, got a few random signals then turned it off again.
Pls anyone know what happened I would appreciate the knowledge.
Cop is easily seen in the first 10 seconds of the video.

Definitely Lidar, the Unidens are terrible at detecting it.

LEO tagged you with LIDAR. R3 is a radar detector. Stationary CHP love LIDAR and rolling CHP love to pace. And when it's hot...they love radar!

You need layers of protection.

Looks like you have a paperweight there. I’ll take it off your hands for $200...

On a serious note, welcome to RDF! Tons of great info and members here to teach you about what your R3 is & isn’t capable of.

You don't 'detect' LIDAR. Well, okay, you can, but LIDAR (1) can target a single vehicle and (2) can get your speed in less than half a second. In short, a LIDAR detector is useless because by the time you detect it, you're already toast. LIDAR must be actively jammed.

It's not surprising that a LIDAR detector inside of a windshield mounted RADAR detector didn't go off. Cops usually aim at the license plate/grill area, and the divergence of a LIDAR beam is 2.5 to 3.5 milliradians (i.e. 2.5 to 3.5 feet wide at 1000 feet distance) and so wouldn't even hit your windshield even at that distance. Furthermore, glass attenuates infrared light. You need active jammers placed on the outside of your vehicle to complement your RADAR detector.

By the way, I've never seen CHP sit underneath the Sand Hill Road overpass like that...interesting. Usually, they sit at the break in the median between Alpine Road and Page Mill Road and LIDAR cars in both directions.

Damn bro it looks like it failed you but it didn't. For Lidar shots, radar detectors are ticket notifiers. We recommend here that you read more about TMG and ALP in their respective sections.

And welcome

Hey and welcome from the bay area as well.

You got hit by lidar. No radar detector will really protect against that.
