There can be plusses and minuses for both situations and we have argued this to death not all that long ago.

I really wonder how many people think V1s need to be updated frequently. There is the downside of a $79 cost for a firmware upgrade or $289 for a trade-in of a unit older than 2012 to a new unit. But I wonder if people are under the impression that some V1 owners are sending in their V1s every year or so?

FWIW, I've updated/upgraded once to trade in my 2000 V1 for a new 2016 V1.

My V1 is still in its original 2003 configuration. I was finally getting around to forking out for an upgrade when I discovered “Temporarily out of stock” months ago. I will upgrade/replace when they become available again, but in the interim, I used the situation as an excuse to buy an R7.

$399+$289(or $79) + shipping. I'm not sure if you had to get the dongle or not, but that is not a bargain to me with no increase in performance. The V1 is a great RD, that's why I bought one, but it did not live up to what I was expecting.

Ya know, I've been thinking about this. I have a feeling, just a feeling mind you, that the guy that started the thread New V2 Info, MWL, works for Valentine.

I'm all with you, no reason to update for every small incremental update, especially when it costs money.
But the flip side is, if every incremental update were available via a download and a USB cable, wouldn't you try it?

If you bought your V1 in 2000 @ $399, updated to ESP @ $289, then bought the BT dongle for @$49, you are into it for $737 currently to stay relevant with modern detectors with no other updates. And this guessing on when the best time to send your V1 in for an update without getting stung by the next best update is for the birds.

Under your above scenario, if this new update is firmware only, you'd likely stay put, yes? So it is what it currently is, and whatever the improvements, you'll pass. But, if it's a next level update like we are all truly hoping for, then you're in for another $289 (can only base this cost on historical data currently available). Then this V1 you currently own is $1026 and that's being really conservative on the upgrades. To me, that's horse-hockey. If you have to upgrade the internals due to hardware changes and improvements over the course of 20 years, that's great you're offering your customers an essentially new detector at cost, but to charge for firmware updates? GTFO with that nonsense.

Honestly I really, truly am hoping for an update that crushes all the current competition on range and k band false filtering. But if it doesn't then this current update hope/hype is a fail IMHO because the next best iteration is just around the corner from someone else, and VR's track record of being an industry innovator has not been stellar in recent memory. YAV1 and JBV1 were the best thing to happen to the V1 in the last 6-7 years and that wasn't directly even VR's doing. The unit as it currently stands is analog in function, and there's only so much that can be done to improve upon it.

I’m so glad I don’t have to sell to consumers. The amount of stupidity in this thread by the haters who can’t do basic value math and those who know so much better than the many-multimillionaires is giving me a migraine.

“Business 101” says become Cedar. Good luck with that.

If you pitch a fit because you’ve loved and relied on a single consumer electronics product for so many years and are given a 30% discount for upgrading to a newer generation well over a decade later, and you try to hold the original purchase price against the total when you’ve enjoyed its use all this time versus some other shiny new thing from another company, you deserve whatever crap you get.

And in the meantime you’ve enjoyed a top-shelf detector saving your butt for twenty fucking years. Christ, how many thousands of dollars would you have shelled out to Belscort or Uniden in the meantime? Two decades later and only now can you spend that same money to get an R7 with hardwire and visor mount and get a detector only better in range. You can sit on your thumb for 20 years to wait for an R7 if you want. I’ll gladly spend that same money to get 20 years of awesomeness.

I wonder if all that awsomeness will include MRCD detection with the junk filter on.

Wow....Tell us how you really feel! All that said....I once owned a Hi-Fi VCR. That was the coolest thing in the world to me, because....not only cold I play high quality movies(at that time), but I could also use it as a "poor mans" reel to reel for playing music. Times have changed, no longer do I have to rewind a tape, I can just skip tracks. My old Hi-Fi VCR still works, but I no longer use it.....Because it's outdated. Bow and arrows can still kill you, but modern tech will prevail. Like it or not.

Edit: It still works for my mother, not for me... she is a Miles Davis fan, copied some of his work and some other jazz for her on to hi-fi vhs for her.

We shall see in "Two Weeks"
It wasn’t relevant today anymore than it was 20 years ago. Attempting to compare a modern V1 to a VCR player is disingenuous at best (giving the benefit of the doubt that it’s just an intentionally dumb or ignorant thing to say versus intentionally trolling).

Maybe. We’ll have to see if the R7 gets that capability first, one of these days.

Congratulations? Not relevant.

In the meantime....This delay gives me time to save up for a new V1..........

If it was some sort of new unit they sure are going about it differently then any other company as far as marketing goes. You would think a couple months out they would start building up hype and excitement to spread the word. If people in the market for a new RD knew for sure a new an improved one was coming out they would wait weeks if not months for it rather than purchasing something from VR’s competition.
That's not always the case, a lot of companies do not want to promise something because if they don't deliver on it/ take a long time to deliver on the promise, then people would be really upset.

We're upset now, imagine if Valentine had promised a new detector a month ago...

Honestly, I'm not losing that much, because I sold all of my old detectors to someone else. The new one plugs into the same cord as the old one, and they all have come with mounts as well. True, you lose on every sale, but you also lose to every upgrade with VR.

The only ones getting burned like that above scenario are poor folks like @Brainstorm69 who just can't let them go. They are all precious to him...

(BTW, @Brainstorm69, have you had to buy another detector toolbag recently? Saw a car detailing bag the other day that had pouches all along the outside that reminded me of your traveling crate. Seemed like a pretty sweet bag for what you'd use it for.)

In my heart of hearts, I really think this is all a moot point though. I don't think anything truly groundbreaking is coming from that little shop in Cincinnati. Mike is old, he's skied one hell of a run, but eventually everyone has to let go of the rope. My gut feeling after some of those patents were not accepted is that he has done exactly that.

Has VR ever "built up hype" for any recent advance? TMF2? ESP? Not sure why you'd expect that to change now.
First, that's a software update, not a new unit.

But more importantly, they DID put a banner up on the website about "junk k fighter," which is how I learned of the update last year.

Wish they would do that with this new (maybe) unit. A banner is not hard. How hard would it be to send an email to all of us that signed up on their list with an update about what is going on? I've been on that for years and never get anything. I don't even get an email from them when a new update comes out! (Another reason my money is on same detector, newer parts.)

I wish I could be that lazy with marketing and communication in my line of work. Oh well whatever I give up on all of this.

Agreed, I have some time to save up and eh if VR doesn’t release something that blows us away I know of at least one other company that I am also waiting to see a new release.

Again let's put the uniden vs VR to the side. All I want to know is are you feeling lucky today? Well are you
Not feeling very lucky.... the temps are supposed to climb into the 90s again and my R7 tends to fall on its’ face in the warm weather.

You call it lazy but I believe he thinks it's smart business. Not saying I agree with it but I drive a mustang and he has a Porsche.
