Not what I wanted to hear. I may be mistaken but I think BlueV1 stated in another thread that the power cord has been a problem. I do recall reading something when I was ordering the cord that a number of people had a failures with the in line fuse holder on the smart cord. Probably on Amazon reviews.
Well as long as @uniden doesn't step in to fix all we can do is bring more visibility to the issue. If you're gonna charge a premium price deliver premium product.

FWIW, I think the official account is @UnidenSupport but I've not seen any sign of interaction since "UniJen" (as she was nicknamed) was supposed to have taken over.

I'd be inclined to send it in to Uniden for a warranty repair/replacement. I don't have any issues like that with mine.
Mine did it a few times after I 1st got it. But it wasn't during boot up. It would happen just after boot up. Power cycling fixes it. Yesterday it happened again when I was leaving the office. Happened 3 times in a row then was fine. fw 124.

Hey Guys,

I can assure you all that "UniJen" is here! We've been very busy lately, adapting to a new role and training new customer service agents. I do monitor these pages very closely daily. With this original post- I would suggest sending the unit in for service(especially since you have done your troubleshooting and following advice of other posters.) I can send you steps through PM on how to send the unit in for service.

But for other guys following this, I'm always here. For any immediate concerns or questions- I have my inbox open for you guys! :) I've just been busy, and playing a few roles here in the office.

Do offer a cross ship? After spending 600 on rd at month old only, waiting several weeks without RD is very inconvenient and frustrating

I am also having random "GPS error" issues. The first time it happened, all of my user settings were reset to factory settings. Since applying the latest firmware update I have had the GPS error happen three times. When this happens, all of the buttons (mark, mute, etc) stop functioning except for the power button.

I am getting constant "GPS Errors" too now, about once every 30 minutes. The unit is useless after that point until I reboot. Infuriating, especially since I returned my Escort Max 360c after only two weeks of ownership for this. I've owned Valentines for 15 years prior to this with absolutely zero issues ever. What happened to quality control?

What condition is your charging system / battery in? That seems like a bit much for only 10 minutes
Agree with Jhunter, 10 mins is way to short. Whilst secondary issue to any quality issues, power voltage drops can cause issues too. Possibly the car battery replacement is calcium? that might not be suitable for the alternator. (Calcium needs higher voltage to charge properly)

All of this seems systematic of intermittent power issues. If you have power cutting in and out it can reek havoc on an electronic device. I'm going to monitor mine for the intermittent GPS.

Do any of you have the power saver turned on?

I got my first GPS error yesterday. What I noticed is that the unit was powering on and off fairly quickly ( I was driving down the road and saw the UNIDEN logo multiple times within a few seconds). The power adapter on the cig lighter side had come loose. After I pushed it back in and the unit booted up, I got the GPS failure. I unplugged the power at the unit for a couple seconds and plugged it back in. No issues since.
Not sure if this plays into anything you are experiencing. Just what I saw yesterday.

I ALWAYS get the GPS ERROR when my R7 starts up. I have to unplug the power and let it power up again. For some reason that always fixes it. Kind of dumb that’s what I have to do. I suppose when the next firmware comes out, that will be a good excuse to do a factory reset to see if that will fix it.
I am having the GPS error also at start up in the morning. In the afternoon when it’s a lot warmer I do not experience any issues with it.
I wanted to chime in.

My R7 would show a GPS error upon startup. Doing a manual power off and on would fix the issue. I’m trying to remember if it did from Day 1 or maybe a month in. Either way, I knew it wasn’t right.

Worked with @Bossdad71 and RadarRoy and Uniden, and they replaced it. So far so good. Thanks again Mike.

Adding update, I attempted a recovery load last night and initially it wouldn't run.

I sent a standard firmware load first and then pushed a recovery load and successfully got it done.

I'll be running the detector today to see what happens with it. Obviously something in it's software was pooched.

Edit: Following recovery load and factory reset - same issue. Going to try it again on it's factory power cord to eliminate the smart cord as the problem but thinking it will have to be sent in.
Try plugging it in to a 12VDC power supply.
See if it still happens.

I feel less insane reading posts like this. Here I was starting to seriously question myself. Seems like a lot of us are putting up with stuff like this.

I am so disappointed in the Quality Control over these slapped together products, not to mention we are paying serious chunk of change for them. If the detector was 4 years old, definitely would make more sense to be seeing these issues crop up. Most of us haven’t been using it for 4 months and have a list of problems already. @UnidenSupport is anyone in your organization acknowledging this?

Did not even know that. I though he was still around. Have been out of the forums for a long time.

Would do the same suggestion to rule out any power issue's with the cord and cigarette plug. I have used the after market cord from Amazon and works great for the last couple years. Had to replace the RJ11 jack due to a worn out one.

Sometimes weather conditions in the area can do this. Was it a cloudy or rainy day? No problems with mine so far. Using a splitter and an after market power cord from Amazon.

Does the RJ11 lock in place to the R7? Have you tried different power cords already? It might not be the R7 per se but you may have intermittent power disconnection from either the cord or the jack.

I have a life so reading through entire threads on radar detector forums is not always possible.
Instead I posted a simple way to eliminate the possibility of an issue with his car.
Clearly......
