Thought I would dialog my woes here.

Note: I am planning on sending new firmware and factory resetting the unit tonight to see if it helps.

Randomly the R7 will reboot and come back up on it's own, then seconds later spit out a GPS error while still being able to (from what I can tell) detect just fine sans any GPS related functions.

It also will spit out random GPS errors.

Seems unrelated to the power supply as it does the same on the OEM power cord VS the Uniden branded hardwired smart cord.

Anyone have suggestions or results with this issue? I saw some had noted issues with GPS using a smart cord but didn't correlate directly with the same details.

@UnidenSupport maybe any info?

Have not heard of this issue--May have to go back and get checked out! When you reinstall the firmware make sure you check the "Recovery" box--that completely wipes out everything and loads a FRESH install--like a reformat!

I ALWAYS get the GPS ERROR when my R7 starts up. I have to unplug the power and let it power up again. For some reason that always fixes it. Kind of dumb that’s what I have to do. I suppose when the next firmware comes out, that will be a good excuse to do a factory reset to see if that will fix it.

Yeah this is pretty persistent. I'm on a 6 hour round trip for work today and I would say I'm power cycling the unit every 20 to 30 minutes to rectify the issue.

I had planned on doing a recovery install tonight like suggested above and have another four to five hours of driving tomorrow to check it out.

I'd be inclined to send it in to Uniden for a warranty repair/replacement. I don't have any issues like that with mine.

Adding update, I attempted a recovery load last night and initially it wouldn't run.

I sent a standard firmware load first and then pushed a recovery load and successfully got it done.

I'll be running the detector today to see what happens with it. Obviously something in it's software was pooched.

Edit: Following recovery load and factory reset - same issue. Going to try it again on it's factory power cord to eliminate the smart cord as the problem but thinking it will have to be sent in.

I have a car power adapter/splitter, and have this issue with the R7 only in the following scenario:

I turn off the ignition, but leave my dash cams (2) running for awhile. RD is off. Voltage is still about 12.2 - 12.4. I turn on the ignition, and my RD powers on itself (it shouldn't!) - that is when the issue occurs.

If I have not left my car off with dash cams running for awhile (just a brief stop), then my RD does NOT power on by itself (expected) when I start my car. Manually power the RD on afterward, and never have the issue.

For the times it does have the GPS error - a power cycle (only one) fixes the issue permanently.

It's gotta be low voltage related at the time of powering the unit on...

P.S. I have noticed that the R7 is a power hog. If I leave it on after I shut my car off, it will drain the car battery down to 11.5 - 11.6 V in a matter of less than 10 minutes. On the other hand, I can leave my dash cams running for hours, and the voltage will still be above 12.0...

What condition is your charging system / battery in? That seems like a bit much for only 10 minutes

Tune up was done 18 months ago, battery is 8 months old, alternator is 3 yrs old, starter is 2 yrs old. Crank is pretty brief, easy start on hot and cold weather. Like I said, the RD is the only power hog in my setup. I can leave dash cams running for hours or my portable satellite radio on, and would not have a low voltage issue.

I have had my R7 since BRD shipped out the first batch. No issues for me. Used everyday and taken it on a few long motorcycle trips. No problems.

Update - (I know... Lots of them) in testing it appears to be 100% related to the Uniden smart cable.

Going to look at options as my work van has it mounted high and the 12v plug is all the way on the floor.

Maybe time for a plug behind the dash and a remote button.

I am having the GPS error also at start up in the morning. In the afternoon when it’s a lot warmer I do not experience any issues with it.

Mine is hardwired and still does it

Got a clip of the issue right after the reboot

Is it hard wired directly to the fuse box or is it a wire tap into the rear view mirror? I bought the smart cord a month or so back but have yet to install it. Currently using my R-O hardwired power cord into the fuse box and it's been fine. This gives me pause on even bothering to do it unless I have some problem with the old hard wire at some point.

Fuse box. Going to check connections tomorrow again. But I doubt its connection since GPS comes back after manual power cycle. Only errors out on the reboots

Not what I wanted to hear. I may be mistaken but I think BlueV1 stated in another thread that the power cord has been a problem. I do recall reading something when I was ordering the cord that a number of people had a failures with the in line fuse holder on the smart cord. Probably on Amazon reviews.

Mine is run off an add a fuse, hardwired with the Uniden smart cord. Works fine using the Uniden 12v factory (included) adapter.

My smart cord has the inline fuse holder cut off if I remember when I installed it accurately. I'll have to take a look and try cutting it out if it's still there.

Also considered changing the end on the smart cord in case it's corroded internally.
